So, when did D'Angelo become a legend? Everytime a mention is made of D now, the terms icon and legend come up. Now you know I love the D, but I was just wondering at what point did he become a legend (not disagreeing) and why? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I guess he has a huge cult following of some sort. Trolls be gone!

There is only one Legend in the music bizz and his name is John.

Never, And Im cool with that. And Im sure he's cool with that. The Legend title or how popular an artist is to the masses means nothing to me. I just love his sound.

As in: "Legend has it that the mythical creature called the D'Angelo roams his studio by night, possessed by the spirit of deceased soul singers, and condemned to continue recording an album for all eternity, or at least until his curse is lifted. Believers say one day this album shall be released into the world and shall cause a great storm in the souls of men, though others say this is just a fairy tale." Personally, I think he became a 'legend' after apparently having serious drug and legal issues for years (serious drug problems and disappearing from public sight for a number of years always seem to help in the 'legend' stakes for some reason) and lo, come the tenth anniversary of the release of Voodoo with no follow-up in sight, the Org did declaim Michael Eugene Archer a LEGEND.
It was then that the John the Baptist for D'angelo's 'second coming', one Questlove Thompson, did turn around and did spake, 'The new album is 99.99999999999999999 % done and will definitely be released sometime this century'.
IMO - Two good albums in 19 years maketh a legend not ...

I think he is. PRINCE: Always and Forever

There's no doubt that he's talented but what exactly makes him legendary at this point. He is getting away with having only two releases in about 20 years but maybe he's considered a legend by some because his fan base is pretty loyal and he's also had some struggles that might make him legendary to some. Okay, you bring up some good points that I hadn't considered before. I guess you could make the argument that he's had an impact on music but what confuses me sometimes is that we clearly see who D'Angelo was influenced by (re: Prince) so we could argue that it's Prince that continues to make the impact on music moreso than D'Angelo. I guess I just don't hear or see a lot of people specifically pointing out D'Angelo as their main musical influence. But, this could be because I don't have my ear to the ground in that regard so that's entirely possible that I might have been missing something along the way I hear what you're saying about Joe and Flip Wilson but I wonder if we had artists who consistenly did what D'Angelo is doing would they also be considered legends just because their name has been around for a while and it automatically makes them a legend in the minds of some? In other words, are we going to consider a group like One Direction a legend in 20 years just because they are hot now for a short while? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, LOL Trolls be gone!

Unfortunately, the answer is yes, LOL Prince is a continuation of James Brown and Sly Stone, so are you taking Prince away? One Direction has not influence anyone. They are no different than NSync and Backstreet. DAngelo came out, totally different from P. Yeah, he got P in him but it's different. PRINCE: Always and Forever

At some point we have to admit that Prince's impact on music has been way more than D'Angelo, I don't think there's any dispute about that. I think One Direction fans would argue with you that they are (or will be) music legends. I guess they are no different than the Beach Boys. They had a few years of being on top but a lot of people consider the Beach Boys to be legends because they had a string of hits but did they leave a musical impact? That's all subjective really... Id say there was a few D'angelo influences after his debut . Musiq Soulchild first single, Raheem DeVaugh, Bilal's first single Soul Sista ,even Chico Debarge's Iggin Me all made an attempt to jump onboard with that new neo soul sound introduced to us with D'angelo's Brown Sugar. But it didnt work for them.

There is no reason why the Quantity of albums he's released should have any bearing on his musical legacy.
I think that for an Artist with a relatively small back catalogue his music continues to captivate his fans like no other artist (with only two full albums) I can think of. Obviously the whole will he/wont he situation of the new album has frustrated people but you can't deny the quality of everything he has recorded.
Terrence Trent D'arby gets a lot of love on here (I'm a huge fan myself) And has only 1 or 2 more major label albums than D' does. Both Sing, Write + Perform a large majority of their recordings. 2 of the most talented Artists of the last 25 years easily. Both have had personal struggles too. Theres no reason D'Angelo shouldn't be considered alongside somebody like that just because the new Album is long overdue.
