I saw him earlier this year--he was terrific! Sorry...er, rather thrilled to just "discover" Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance and Songs For The End of the World this year. Late to the club. Again. LOL IMHO Rick's song "My Depression" is the best song ever written about the subject.

A shame he had to cancel his Aussie tour--there were a LOT of angry Aussies! razz

MY DEPRESSION

Born in the southern land
Where a man is a man
Don't remember too much
Warm momma
Cold touch
Post-war baby boom
Fifty kids in one room
All white
Future bright
But living in a womb

Got a TV receiver
Jerry Mathers is the Beaver
No blacks
No queers
No sex
Mouseketeers

Daddy kept moving round
I can't settle down
Always....
The lost new kid in town

Manlicher lock and loaded
JFK's head exploded
Dark figure
At the fence
End of my innocence
Hormones hit me
Chew up
Spit me
Get stoned
Get plastered
Always was a moody bastard

Guitar fool
Kicked out of high school
Joined a band
Vietnam
Momma said "kill the man"
Daddy gets real sick
Too intense I can't kick it
Buy myself a ticket to the U.S.A.

Oh my god
It's my life
What am I doing kicking up the foundations
That's right
My life
Better start looking at my destination

Hollywood sex rat
Been there done that
Jaded afraid I'd
Never get it a turn at bat
Last in a long line
Finally hit the big time
Goldmine
Feeding time
Money, fame
I get mine

Use it
Abuse it
Daddy's dies
I lose it
Get a wife
Get a son
Beget another one

My head said "God's dead"
Motorcycle
Body shred
Big life crisis rears its ugly head

Oh my god
It's my life
What am I doing kicking up the foundations
That's right
My life
Better start looking at my destination

Well, Prozac
Lithium
Could never get enough of 'em
Last wills
Shrinks bills
Sleeping pills
Sex kills
Edge of sanity
My infidelity
Looking in the mirror and thinking how it use to be

Don't like the skin I'm in
Caught in a tailspin
Honest to God vision
Spiritual transmission
Climb aboard the life raft
Looking back I have to laugh
Take a breath
Don't know if I'm ready for the second half

Oh my god
It's my life
What am I doing kicking up the foundations
That's right
My life
Better start looking at my destination

My life
My depression
My sin
My confession
My curse
My obsession
My school
My lesson

That's right
My life
My depression
That's right
My life
My depression

As I have said before since RICK returned to recording and releasing albums in 1998, to me he has put out the best most consistent work of any artist that i have heard, and when i say that i mean actually PUTTING OUT albums, touring them constantly, playing the new stuff as well as old. Rick has totally embraced his past, and built this new legion where his fans have elevated him back on charts, I mean his album "Venus In Overdrive" was his highest chart spot since 1985, and now Rick at 65, yes he is 65, he works freaking harder than anyone out there. Had 2 best selling books, the albums KARMA, Shock Denial Anger Acceptance, Rick Alive 2000, Venus In Overdrive, The day after yesterday, Songs for the end of the world, also a childrens album, back on tv, and now in a meryl streep movie next year (this is why he cancelled aussie tour, he got a role in her new flick) add all this on top of touring every single year, averaging at least 75-100 gigs, sometimes with his band, sometimes stripped down, sometimes with other artists. People can keep Beyonce and her hard work, Rick is doing the real deal. Oh yeah and he is a 100% INDIE ARTIST, and not to mention 2 films, one documentary his fans did, and then the one SOUND CITY with Dave Grohl.

nod

Some of the stuff he's done in recent years is better than what rock artists half his age are making.
