'SNL' Recap: Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson Bring the Funk With Mystikal, Cameron Diaz Raps & More

As expected, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson brought some major funk to Saturday Night Live’s Thanksgiving show on Nov. 22.

The superstar pop crooner and retro-cool writer/producer turned the SNL musical stage into a retro neon nightclub with two tracks likely appear on Ronson’s fourth solo album, Upcoming Special, due Jan. 27.

Dressed in shades and a salmon-colored blazer, Mars lit up the stage with the throwback jam "Uptown Funk” as the evening’s first musical performance. It took on a very similar vibe as the impossibly cool music video for the track, which finds Mars, his backup crew and Ronson prowling around city streets grooving to the Prince-y, synth-y funk jam.

“Uptown Funk” recently entered the Hot 100 at No. 65 and it's poised to gain even more steam thanks to the music video.

Next up, Mars and Ronson brought out Mystikal for the uptempo “Feel Right,” during which the rapper took center stage behind a lively horn section and Ronson manning the guitar. The James Brown-inspired song came together after a chance encounter between Ronson and Mystikal in the studio.

Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson Give 'SNL' Some 'Uptown Funk'

Mystikal also turns up to 'Feel Right' at the midtown Manhattan studios

If this week's Saturday Night Live episode is any indication, perennially suited London retro soul producer Mark Ronson has finally found an appropriate match in Bruno Mars. We've already heard the song and seen the video for their forthcoming collaboration "Uptown Funk," but when they brought that collaboration to the 30 Rockefeller Plaza soundstage on it highlighted just the sort of kindred spirits that the Unorthodox Jukebox singer and Ronson really are. As Ronson gave an electric guitar performance that Prince, another recent SNL guest, could have been proud of, Mars coolly sing-rapped his way through the recent single with an effortlessness that fits the producer's compositions. New Orleans rapper Mystikal also turned up to perform his single with the duo, "Feel Right," you can catch that one below and "Uptown Funk" above.

Watch Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson Funk Up 'SNL'

Rapper Mystikal also joins the duo for performance of new track "Feel Right"

By Daniel Kreps | November 23, 2014

Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars visited Saturday Night Live last night to debut their new track "Uptown Funk," and the duo – backed by a powerful horn section, a quartet of backup singers and a surprise guest – used their Chic-infused single to turn the SNL stage into a smoky, funky dance club.

The highly stylized performance was reminiscent of the duo's recent "Uptown Funk" video and the Morris Day and the Time sequences in Purple Rain. The venue in which Mars and Ronson were playing, on one of the most revered stages for the past 40 years, also added an extra dose of meaning to the lyric, "Saturday night and we in the spot, don't believe me, just watch."

Throughout the week leading up to the SNL performance, it was reported that Mars and Ronson would be joined by a "very special guest." That rumor became fact on their second song of the night, the James Brown-inspired rave-up "Feel Right," when "Shake Ya Ass" rapper Mystikal grabbed the microphone, pushing Mars to backup duty. The track itself grooves like a modern, up-tempo take on the Godfather of Funk's "I Feel All Right," and Mystikal does his best Brown impression, delivering each line like a sermon.

Funny you should say because as I was listening I thought that it might be one. I just took for granted it wasn't one because Bruno isn't known for having them. Was it? shrug

Bruno! He's like all of my favorite artists rolled into one. Except he has maybe 1/4 the talent of any of them. I expected more from this. And why on earth would he get a criminal like "Mystikal" to do a rap. Was DMX not available?

There were a few moments where I thought it may have been backing tracks, especially on the second song but I would be surprised because Bruno usually doesn't seem to do that.

I dont know why they would need to use a backing track when they had his live band up there playing LIVE and they were all singing LIVE. rolleyes Nothing was being lipped or mimed to a pre-recorded track. But I will say this--I did not see a keyboard on stage and the piano/keyboard player (John Fossit) was nowhere to be seen...since the song does have synthesizers there is a possibility that MAYBE a backing track was used for the sake of the synthesizers in the song, idk. But WHO CARES if there was a backing track--the performance was still incredible, Bruno still slayed and the LIVE BAND and LIVE VOCALS were still on point! I swear, some ppl stay trying to do the most to nitpick over ridiculous stuff, going out of their way to not give due props, like whatever! lol

His fans are having a field day with that lol.

Btw MJscarousal, doesnt Phredley (the guy on his right with the mult-colored shirt on) with his new haircut, doesnt he resemble a young Marlon Jackson? hmmm Or is it just me lol

Forbes’ List of the Highest-Earning Celebrities Under 30

At 29, Bruno Mars just squeezes onto our list in fourth place with $60 million. After he turns 30, expect the crooner to keep going strong on the Celebrity 100, where he ranked 13th this year in his list debut. His album Unorthodox Jukebox went double platinum and last year he earned the title of the youngest musician ever to play the Super Bowl halftime show.

@mrkingalexxx: BrunoMars & I. #BrunoMars usually doesn’t stop that often for photos & when he did his bodyguard was a complete animal not allowing anyone to take each other’s photos and causing a huge scene when it only 4 of us. Although, I took all my friends photos & had to #settle for a crappy selfie but, I’m happy I finally got a photo with him & he was nice even pulling my arm to bring me next to him when the bodyguard told him to get in the car. He said I can’t forget about homeboy! Thanks Bruno!#TheLostPlanet #EarthToMars #DooWopsAndHooligans #UnorthodoxJukebox

Interesting story of what the fan had to go thru just to get a pic with Mr. Mars. I know bodyguards are there to protect their client but sometimes I think they can be a bit overzealous in dealing with the fans. They should be able to properly assess the situation and react accordingly. A fan wanting a simple quick pic is not on the same level as some crazy person trying to manhandle or hurt the celebrity. Oh well, at least he got his pic w/Bruno! smile

From Sugarhill Gang to Trinidad James, a Look at the Influences of Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars' 'Uptown Funk'

By Sean Ross | November 24, 2014 10:01 AM EST

Part of the excitement of Mark Ronson's “Uptown Funk,” the just-released kickoff single from the DJ/producer’s Uptown Specialis catching the allusions to one early ’80s funk/R&B classic after another. Even on Ronson’s own Facebook page fans cite “Cameo horns, the Time [keyboards], and ‘Party Train’ [by the Gap Band] drums.”

There’s an irony here. Because “Uptown Funk” is effectively a new Bruno Mars single as well, it received instant airplay at top 40 radio, including the “world premiere” treatment from some iHeart Media stations. By comparison, many of the early ‘80s classics referenced were released during the worst period of a “disco backlash” that effectively kept all types of black music, not just disco, off of top 40 for three years, beginning in fall 1979.

A few R&B artists, most typically those with an established track record at top 40, still managed hits during those years, including Diana Ross, the Pointer Sisters, and Michael Jackson. So did acts who fit in with the soft pop that dominated top 40 at the time — Al Jarreau and James Ingram’s duets with Quincy Jones.

But many other developments in R&B music — the beginnings of rap, the return of disco to its R&B roots, the emergence of a second generation of funk artists, many of them influenced by new wave — happened mostly off of Top 40’s radar. Rick James' “Super Freak,” a song that plays on Adult Contemporary stations today, reached No. 19 on the Hot 100 largely on the strength of sales. On charts that measured pop airplay only, it was mired in the 30s. The crowning of Prince as one of the decade’s breakthrough artists in the music press was spurred by two albums (Dirty Mind and Controversy) that got no pop radio support. Even “1999” was resisted by top 40 radio and had to be reissued after Prince’s breakthrough with the more overtly rock-flavored “Little Red Corvette.”

The resistance to R&B crossovers finally broke down in 1982-83 as the result of a handful of records. Some were rock-flavored (Ray Parker Jr.'s “The Other Woman,” Prince's “Corvette,” Michael Jackson's “Beat It”). Some were just undeniable (Marvin Gaye's “Sexual Healing,” Jackson’s “Billie Jean”). Still, some of black music’s most exciting acts of the era were years into their hitmaking streaks before managing a crossover. Often, the biggest top 40 chart hit would turn out to be a less-enduring late career record. Ask most people to name a Midnight Star song and you’ll likely get the No. 81 “No Parking (On The Dance Floor)” long before the No. 18 “Operator.”

"Uptown Funk" isn’t the only recent example of a pop hit referencing an ignored R&B hit from this era. Disclosure's “Latch” recalls the shuffle of “Searching” by Change, the Chic-like Italian dance act fronted here by a then-unknown Luther Vandross. “Latch” broke at pop radio by riding the coattails of EDM, then engineered a reverse crossover to R&B/Hip-Hop and Adult R&B. “Searching” reached No. 23 at R&B in 1980, but never managed any pop airplay.

————————————

Here’s a tour of the uptown funk of the early ‘80s with songs that listeners have heard alluded to in Ronson and Mars’ hit — some fleetingly, some more obviously.

Zapp, "More Bounce To The Ounce" (1980)In fall 1980, a lot was made of Tom Browne’s No. 1 R&B hit “Funkin’ For Jamaica (N.Y.)” failing to hit the Hot 100 at all. But “More Bounce to the Ounce” was nearly as scarce on pop radio, reaching No. 2 R&B and only No. 86 pop. Even after R&B was again welcome at top 40, Zapp somehow couldn’t shed the “too funky for pop” tag. Another classic, “Computer Love,” failed to chart pop altogether. Leader Roger Troutman had to wait until 1987 for a pop hit with the ballad “I Want To Be Your Man.” The exception was San Francisco where Troutman’s 1982 version of “I Heard It through the Grapevine” became a hit on top 40 KFRC. It’s no accident that Troutman received California love long before 2pac's “California Love” was built around his samples.

One Way, “Cutie Pie” (1982) Evolving from Detroit’s Al Hudson & the Soul Partners, One Way charted nearly 30 R&B singles, but landed at pop only once when “Cutie Pie” peaked at No. 62, again with the help of KFRC. It’s too bad. In a genre filled with versatile ensembles, One Way was one of R&B’s most versatile outlets, managing, among other things, a James Brown homage, “Mr. Groove,” at a time when Brown was most absent from the R&B spotlight. Original lead singer Alicia Myers had her own stealth classic, “I Want To Thank You,” whose enduring appeal belies its own No. 37 R&B peak.

Gap Band, "I Don’t Believe You Wa...our Head)" (1980) The Gap Band were former protégés of Leon Russell and veterans of several labels when they reeled off a string of funk hits, beginning in 1979. It would take three years before top 40 grudgingly acknowledged them with “Early In The Morning” (which others hear referenced in “Uptown Funk” as well) and the funk/rock “You Dropped A Bomb On Me.” This 1980 hit got its subtitle (which most people think is its name) from a Pittsburgh audience’s ad-libbed chant.

Earth, Wind & Fire, "Getaway" (1976) EW&F were on an eighteen month hot streak that included “Shining Star,” “That’s The Way of the World,” “Sing A Song” and the live versions of “Reasons” and “Devotion.” “Getaway” went to No. 12 pop, but has long disappeared from the Oldies/Classic Hits format. That’s too bad because this song, an unlikely tribute to transcendental meditation, contains especially propulsive drumming and the sort of reverberating horn riff that powers “Uptown Funk.” Even on the heels of the pop-flavored ballad “After The Love Is Gone,” EW&F would face resistance when they came out with another album in fall 1980, during the worst of the disco backlash. They would manage one more pop hit a year later with “Let’s Groove.”

Sequence, “Funk You Up” (1979) In the last few days of 1979, it was still possible to name every rap record that had been released on the heels of the phenomenal success of the Sugarhill Gang's “Rapper’s Delight.” Sugarhill, the label, waded back in with one of the first female raps (and the acknowledged first by a group) and its promise to “funk you right on up.” With “Rapper’s Delight” able to get no further than No. 36 pop, this got nowhere near pop radio. The group’s Angie Stone resurfaced in the ‘90s as the lead singer of Vertical Hold, and then with her own neo-soul hits.

Sugarhill Gang, "Apache" (1982) The Incredible Bongo Band's version of Jorgen Ingmanns 1961 instrumental hit is one of hip-hop’s break-beat backbones. The version that gave the Sugarhill Gang their last top 15 R&B hit often isn’t even mentioned in the same breath, typical of the grudging respect that the group often commands. Within a few months, other rap hits like “The Message” and “Planet Rock” would make the Sugarhill Gang sound quaint. But the song remained a wedding/party staple for years, as did Sir Mix-A-Lot’s derivation, “Jump On It.” And thanks to the current boom in old-schoo...p stations, I’d actually already heard “Apache” on the radio on the day that “Big Bank” Hank Jackson died, earlier this month.

George Kranz, "Trommeltanz (Din Daa Daa)" (1983) Before MTV helped break down the resistance to new wave, especially the quirkier version, it was often easier to find on R&B radio than at pop. Even after top 40 opened up to “Puttin’ On The Ritz,” “The Safety Dance” and other such goofiness, it was R&B only that found a place for this German import, at least until it was sampled in M/A/R/R/S' “Pump Up The Volume.” (“Trommeltanz” was particularly a hit in Detroit, always a hotbed of new wave/R&B cross-pollination.) Some of that probably had to do with being on an indie label, a barrier that was still a few years away from falling.

The Time, "Cool" (1981): – “Uptown Funk” recalls different Time songs to different people. It might be because Morris Day's call-and-response with the band became one of their signatures. It might also be because more people heard “Jungle Love,” after the band’s appearance in “Purple Rain” and the success of all things Prince related finally pushed them on to pop radio. Ironically, the band’s biggest chart hit, only R&B No. 1, and only gold single is the now forgotten 1990 reunion song, “Jerk-Out.”

Trinidad James, "All Gold Everything" (2012) The only credited song on “Uptown Funk,” this top 10 R&B and rap hit gives “Uptown” its “if you don’t believe me, just watch” chant, and offers an irony of its own. Despite a boom in R&B crossovers at the beginning of the year, it’s as hard for a new Hip-Hop or R&B hit to make it to top 40 as it was 33 years ago. Heritage acts (Jay Z, Eminem) and retro-sounding hits (“Happy,” “All Of Me”) have the advantage. Even Jeremih's “Don't Tell 'Em,” the most contemporary sounding recent crossover, depended on an artist with two other previous pop hits (and a reference to Snap's dance-pop hit, “Rhythm Is A Dancer”).

Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson Have a Total Blast on SNL

brunomarksnl.jpg

And just like that, the internet was a-floodin' with hearts, stars, enamored emojis, and compliments, and for one brief moment, we were all united in the warm embrace of Hooliganism after Bruno Mars took Saturday Night Live by storm (and in flamingo pink at that). We can bicker about pop stars. We can fight about Adam Levine's falsetto. We may fall down in fisticuffs over lip-syncing or awkward choreography, but we can also get giddy about a solid showing from a talent who's been staying out of the headlines lately, and we can get real, real excited for their return. That's exactly the kind of good cheer Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson brought to Saturday Night Live.

The crooner's latest collaboration with ice-cold (as in cooler-than-cool) superproducer Ronson, "Uptown Funk" has been warmly received since its drop a couple of weeks ago, and the world has apparently been waiting with breath more bated than they even realized for new Mars tuneage. The single is the first offering from Ronson's Uptown Special (which won't see its release till the new year), but the euphoria was mostly thrown the "Grenade" singer's way for every move he made and note he hit. Ever the likable dreamboat and Boy Next Door of the charts, Mars was able to strut a taut line between cheeky confidence and charm while keeping time with the throwback funk Ronson conjured up this time around. The fantastic neon splash behind him didn't hurt the '70s vibe in the slightest, nor did his moves, and Ronson let Mars and his dancers bask in the glow of the spotlight while he stood in the background, focusing on his riffs. If the in-studio audience was on their feet and dancing like maniacs, we wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

"Feel Right" brought about a couple surprises, with Mars taking a backup mic and Mystikal coming front and center. (Where's he been since "Shake Ya Ass," you say? Residing in Funky Town, apparently.) Again with the curveballs, SNL! Ronson and Mars looked like they were having a complete and total blast as they rode that bassline through "Feel Right," and Mystikal's percussive call-outs fit in perfectly with the bright instrumentation and sharp-dressed guys. If "Uptown Funk" and "Feel Right" are the first steps Ronson's taking in a new direction, we can get on board with these tracks that feel like they were ripped from a Tarantino soundtrack.

As for the internet, everyone and their mama (seriously) fell for Bruno hook, line, and sinker, and someone should get Arsenio Hall a gig recapping SNL, because dude's loving this season.

Bruno Mars ... & Mystical ... was funkier than burning hair in a gas station restroom!!! #bananas

To be fair, it is Mark Ronson's band (or lack of), and he is a producer mainly.

Naughty Kitty, as I'm sure you've heard by now that Bruno posted on his Twitter that he's looking for people to send videos of people and their families dancing to Uptown Funk in order to win a "prize". He didn't mention what the prize is but I reckon this is an interesting publicity stunt to spread the word about the new song smile Did you submit an entry with you dancing with your cat? biggrin

Oh yes I watched the whole thing go down as it was happening! I was like, boy what are you doing tweeting during Thanksgiving dinner? lol But it was cool tho, Bruno even talked to a couple of his fans thru DMs! biggrin He picked the winner (Deja Montgomery) and she posted the DM convo they had and he's gonna be mailing her prize to her! Have no idea what it is tho. I bet its something he will autograph. What if it's one of his guitars? eek And speaking of Bruno tweeting, he just tweeted this....

A rare gem of a video of Bruno singing an acoustic version of Just the Way You Are back in 2010
