Premieres Oct 27: HBO documentary on James Brown's social activism and business

  • By
  • Eric R. Danton
Spotlight on James Brown, y’all: though the hardest working man in show business died in 2006, Brown is undergoing a resurgence of sorts this fall, on turntables and onscreen. Four of Brown’s albums have been reissued, including the career-encompassing starter set “20 All-Time Greatest Hits!” There’s a new biopic in theaters, “Get on Up,” starring Chadwick Boseman as Brown. And there’s the HBO documentary “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown.” Speakeasy today premieres a clip from “Mr. Dynamite,” which was directed by Oscar-winner Alex Gibney and produced by Mick Jagger (who was also a producer of “Get on Up.”)
The documentary focuses on Brown’s social activism and business empire, and includes interviews with Jagger, Rev. Al Sharpton, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Chuck D and Brown’s musical collaborators, including Maceo Parker, Clyde Stubblefield, Melvin Parker, Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, Martha High, Bootsy Collins and Fred Wesley. The two-hour film also features archival interviews with Brown and previously unseen performance footage.

In the clip below, drummer Stubblefield and Brown’s former tour manager Alan Leeds are among the subjects describing the dominant role the singer played in King Records, which released his singles and albums starting with “Please Please Please” in 1956, and King Studio, where Brown recorded them.
“He owned King Studio,” Stubblefield says. “Not money-wise, but talent-wise.”
“Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown” debuts on HBO Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. EST. What do you think of the clip? Leave your thoughts in the comment

I sure hope there's unreleased footage of James at the Apollo Theater from the Sixties and Seventies and most hopefully Mr.Brown's performance at the Newport Jazz Festival from 1969 and more never before seen footage. If James Brown's family and his estate are involved, this documentary shouldn't dissapoint.

I saw the preview/commercial for the James Brown documentary late last night and it really looks good! As a side note, I happened to be watching the documentary HBO is currently showing about how there is not a human rights law in Russia protecting gay people. Because of it, it is practically legal to gay-bash and harass gays. They film the encounters and put them on websites - which is quite popular. Therefore, the humiliated person is seen not only getting beaten-up, but they likely lose their jobs, are humiliated before their family and friends, and lives in constant fear of living openly. The documentary was narrated by Matt Bomer and was really well-done. The subject matter sure makes you angry however! mad cry

Getxxxx,
Are you saying that James Brown's performance at the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival wasn't filmed?I knew it was recorded because it's on a website called Wolfgang's Vault. You said this documentary ends in the career of The Godfather in the Seventies, which is a great thing because he was still young and at his peak!

In 2012 James Brown’s biography The Life and Music of James Brown was published, providing insight into the King of Soul’s entrepreneurial spirit. Known as the “Hardest-Working Man In Show Business,” Brown owned three record labels, various restaurants, and even a few radio stations. Besides corporations, Brown also notably created James Brown Food Stamps. Although not included in the story line in the singer’s recent biopic, Get On Up, Chadwick Boseman, who played the legendary singer, and Dan Akroyd, who took on the role of Ben Bart (Brown’s manager) revealed information on the singer’s past financial ventures during a recent press conference for the film.

Reflecting on learning interesting facts about Brown, Boseman said:

” The most surprising business venture was the James Brown Food Stamps. It was a part of him wanting to recycle money within in the black community before it goes outside of the community. It was actually James’ idea and obviously it is not still around but it was the most surprising thing to learn about him.”

Akroyd added:

“Nothing James did as an entrepreneur surprised me. He has a wide range of entrepreneur experiences; he knew how to handle people, money and balance an [accounting] book. Brown especially knew how to make a tour more profitable or highlight another artist. He also had his various radio stations and merchandising. Brown just got it and that had to do with him working from a very early age. Nothing surprised me with Brown, so when you hear he did various things I would say “oh yeah, of course he did that” because he has the knowledge and knows how to deal with the mechanisms of business.”

Spin magazine reports the James Brown stamps died out as the state of California phased them out of the Los Angeles area where the stamps were generally in use.

Only thing I wish is they would have went into the Joe Tex beef and the Solomon Burke beef. More on Little Willie John, his idol.

Also, a little more on the early years when he was hitless after "Please" in Feb pf 56 and before "Try Me" Oct 58.

James was no joke. My 1st musical hero was JB.

I loved that part when he told off the guest on that talk show.
