2014 VS 2013: Which year of mainstream music is worse?

I say 2014. 2013 was bad and was mostly all hype and no substance but 2014 has only continued down that path with somehow even less than 2013 offered.

We're 2 months away from the end of 2014 and thus far it has been a pretty uneventful year. Albums have never felt more irrelevant and it shows in album sales which are only getting lower as well as the bar that determines one to be a commercial success. The lack of star power is glaring with upstart acts like Ariana and Iggy being on the forefront for most of the year with nothing outside of promotion and uber-incessant radio play to justify why. Not a single big name or artist I'm interested in (except Ariana and her's sucked) have yet to drop an album, especially on the hip hop side of things. Nothing but announcements with no release dates, no album names, and many delays which is more disappointing than anything. It's basically been nothing more than an extended series of teases and nothing to follow up with. Delivery for the most part has been weak too. I'm not a fan but Chris Brown drops "X" after what feels like forever and word of it being different than any album he's made before (see "Fine China") only to hear "Loyal" and have that shoved down our throats till the album is FINALLY released and though I have yet to actually give it a try, most of what has gone into deminstrating what it's about has really kept me from listening to it, much less actually paying money for it. R&B in general continues to be underlined, the antics and PR stunts are only getting better at keeping artists' names in the light while their actual music gets more and more sidelined in favor of that (Miley is one that comes to mind), and artists keep appearing and disappearing without sany notice whatsoever. The few bright sides to 2014 are Pharrell and the disappearance of Macklemore.

To you, which year is worse?

Too early to tell; heck, a decade from now somebody will claim that they were in fact great years.

Your tastes may vary but there's not much to look forward to for the remainder of this year with the way things are looking. And if they do it'll likely be much too late to make a difference for 2014.

I bet my tastes don't vary much from yours, and personally, I agree.

I buy few albums a year, much less from mainstream artists. Most of the music I buy or download are from lesser-known artists these days. I never play my radio for music.

But overall, we don't know how the "small-p" pop music of the last 2 years will be considered down the road. A decade from now, some orgers may be crowing about how good 2013 and 2014 were for mainstream music.

The albums I buy are mostly downloads from old school artists (particularly from the 80s and the 70s) since that's mostly the music I listen to anyway. And same here, I never turn the radio on anymore.

I don't know if anybody will be claiming 2013 or 2014 were in good in any way for music a decade from now. That's not to say you aren't right but I highly doubt it. I haven't seen/ don't see anybody waxing poetic about 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, or 2004. Some years are just bad years and are remembered as such. 2013 and 2014 fit the bill for years that show how bad mainstream music can be.
