Bobby Womack's Family Is Broke

Bobby Womack DeathSinger Bobby Womack left behind a massive debt when he died in June -- including a huge child support judgment -- and now his family is trying to figure out how to pay it.

Bobby's widow, Regina, filed court docs in L.A. showing he owed $250K in back child support for two sons living in Ft. Wayne, IN -- one is 14 and the other an adult. He also had an unpaid loan for $400K when he died.

But Womack didn't leave much in the way of assets -- according to the docs he had $52K in cash and $7,250 in personal belongings, which included some jewelry and a 1974 Buick.

Regina says Womack also had music rights and royalties valued around $350K -- which will help pay down the debt -- if she can capitalize on renewed interest in his music since his death.

But Regina's a realist ... admitting the value of Bobby's music could fade quickly. In other words, help a sister out ... buy some Bobby tunes now!

Why should the family be responsible for the child support. The man is now dead. And the estate is broke.

This is really sad. I thought his catalogue would be worth some millions at least.

That's what I thought too. It's just like if someone suddenly dies and has a lot of credit card debt, the widow isn't responsible for paying it down, all that's needed is a copy of the death certificate to be sent and it's done with. If they keep harrassing then legal action needs to be involved. But back child support...even on a child that is a grown adult now? Really?

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I don't know who owns his catalog but Bobby was never a big seller, even in R&B circles.

That's what I thought, too. Doesn't that type of debt die with death?

Agreed. I think his last big selling hit was "If You Think You're Lonely Now" and that was 1982.

Life Insurance...

If you have a history of drug dependence -whether you kicked the habit or not - it can be difficult to obtain life insurance at any age. Rule of thumb, purchase life insurance when you are young and dont' allow it to laspse. Even so, in the small print of some insurance policies, they can void your policy if they discover you have or had a substance abuse problem(s).

Did Womack have publishing rights to his music -I'm going to assume like most artist he didn't own his masters. Some where around the world they are playing / singing his music, was he recieving royalties for that? Is Mr. Womack image trademarked? So, that his family could have control over his image and use for adverstiement....?

After Womack's estate dept is paid off, his family should get busy to set his estate right. So that his wife or heirs can recieve whatever he bequeathed to them... if anything.

Maybe the family wants to accept the heritage for the royalties in the future?

By accepting the heritage they also have to accept the debts?
