Probably the debut or 2nd album The Fat Boys Are Back.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I remembered The Fat Boys. They were very popular in the 80's. One of them died of a heart attack, I believe.

If you're into new jack swing, you might be interested in Prince Markie Dee's solo album.

I also recommend the second one, but that debut.. every minute is essential.

I like how they managed to put their earliest Disco 3 songs on the first one, and full-length versions of the songs.

As for their other great tracks, you can find them on the flawless Rhino compilation, All Meat No Filler.

It's very odd that The Hip Hop world doesnt credit The Fat Boys more if at all. They Were an 80's Sensation and were featured in a movie that became an 80's Cult-classic...Their Beatboxing was on-point....

I think a lot of early-mid 80s hip hop (Fat Boys, Whodini, Kurtis Blow) gets overlooked in favor of debating everyone's favorite lyricist from 1987 (Rakim, BDK, KRS, etc) that the entertainment value or impact the artists right before them go severely overlooked. They were the ones who expanded hip hop's appeal and opened doors for rappers of the later 80s.

I think that some people have forgotten that early hip hop was party music and used for breakdancing and popping. It later became less dancible and more about the beats and the streets and "keepin' it real". Most of the early rap songs were more fun subjects, not protest/message songs. People also put down "pop rap" and doing colabs with The Beach Boys & Chubby Checker didn't help to win over people wanting rappers to have street cred or to be serious.

and it still is at times (as witnessed on the Krush Groove Reunion gig two weeks ago) when even Kurstis Blow did a shot at "breakdancing" if you wann call it that way smile considering his age it was uhmmm okay I guess (KB is going down at 6:55)

and back on topic, my T-Shirt says that amongst 30 old school legends also Fat Boy Kool Rock Ski appeared on the renuion show.

i can't remember seeing him, but most likely because me and hundreds of others were let in only after the show had already started due to fucking slow security checks at the entry confused dammit, I even missed Heather Hunter neutral razz

I ended up getting the Fat Boys Are Back. It's a pretty solid album!! I also can't understand why they never get props in the Hip Hop world. They were one of the biggest (no pun intended) groups in hip hop in the 80s. Where's the love for them? My guess is that doing poppier songs helped them lose some street cred.

Don't know if this is still the case but for a while, this compilation CD was going for outrageous prices on the net because most of their albums were never released or OOP on CD.

The least chubby, Prince Markie Dee, stayed pleasantly plump. biggrin

The middle one, Kool Rock Ski, people don't even recognize because he became a gym body. smile

The fattest fat boy, Buffy The Human Beatbox, died of obesity. sad

One of my favorite songs is Force MD's Meet The Fat Boys, but it's on the Force MD's album Chillin'.

hardwork

It must be noted in any discussion of the Fat Boys and their legacy that Prince Markie Dee wrote and produced approximately 1/3 of Mary J. Blige's debut LP including "Real Love." Mary from 1992 to 1999 was everything she was ever advertised to be and more. She was a force of nature. To go from the Fat Boys who were certainly formidable musically yet whose very success tneded to typecast its members to playing a critical role in launching Mary J. Blige is QUITE impressive.
