Queen announce new album Queen Forever, featuring Freddie Mercury + Michael Jackson

Queen announce new album Queen Forever, featuring Freddie Mercury + Michael Jackson

Queen have announced the release of a new album - featuring three unheard tracks with vocals from late frontman Freddie Mercury. Hear 'There Must Be More To Life Than This' featuring Michael Jackson below.

Queen Forever is set for release on 10 November. Among the tracks is 'There Must Be More To Life Than This' - a collaboration between Queen and Michael Jackson, as well as previously unfinished Mercury-Queen track 'Let Me In Your Heart Again' and a new stripped-down ballad version of Mercury’s first solo hit and Giorgio Moroder collaboration, 'Love Kills'.

The rest of the album consists of Queen hits, classic tracks, and new versions of fan favourites, with guitarist Brian May describing certain recordings as "things that we have collected together that are representative of our growth rather than the big hits."

The Queen and Jacko duet started out in the sessions for Queen's 1981 album, Hot Space, but was never completed. Now, the finished result has been remixed by William Orbit.

"I had known Roger for many years, now he was on the phone asking if I would get involved in this musical adventure," said Orbit in a statement. "When I first played it in my studio I opened a trove of delights provided by the greatest of musicians. Hearing Michael Jackson's vocals was stirring. So vivid, so cool, and poignant, it was like he was in the studio singing live. With Freddie's vocal solo on the mixing desk, my appreciation for his gift was taken to an even higher level.

"The musicianship of all four members of Queen is phenomenal. Roger, an extraordinarily multi talented man I've always admired. John Deacon's original bass part with its lyrical fluidity that made it easy for me to know where to put the odd reinforcement.

He added: "Freddie's original piano carried most of the song's musical DNA. Brian, one take for the solo, a blur of fingers, and the spirits of MJ and FM fully present, in the moment, sending shivers down the spine."

Queen Forever is available as a 20-track single CD and as an extended 36-track, two-CD set. See the full tracklist below.

Didi Benami to release Reverie

Didi Benami finished American Idol’s ninth season as a top-ten finalist. After several years refining her craft she’s due to release her debut album entitled ‘Reverie’ on September 30th, 2014. Didi draws emotion and inspiration from the likes of Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks, gracefully fusing folk, soul and rock to form her sound.

didi benami music

The Tennessee based 27 year old singer songwriter’s troubled childhood and the tragic loss of her best friend drove Didi forward in forming this record resulting in powerful melodies, hypnotic guitars and stunning vocals.

When questioned on her difficult upbringing Didi Benami said “Throughout my life I’ve always turned to music to help me get from moment to moment, and so I try to write songs that will inspire or empower others that way.” Her gripping delivery of ‘Terrified’ was what drew in and captivated audiences all around the world.

Released independently and made in collaboration with Billy Mohler, Reverie achieves that stirring spirit thanks both to Benami’s poetic and boldly personal lyrics and a masterful voice that’s at turns sweet and soulfully dusky.

Born in New York and raised in Knoxville, Benami began honing her vocals by singing in school events and in church choirs. However at age 14, she had to move away from tension at home and live with a relative, and even took on minimum wage jobs to save up for college. Flash forward a decade and a half and Didi is a great example of perseverance and hard work paying off.

Reverie is the start of a much brighter future for Didi Benami. From the opening track titled ‘Trouble’, right through to ‘Hummingbird’, Didi displays magnificent control over her vocals and the hauntingly powerful tracks will remain with you long after you’ve finished listening.

Her songs on the album communicate hope and beauty through pain and dissolution. As Didi says “My dream for this album is to somehow communicate the battle of both darkness and the light that exists inside as well as outside ourselves.”

Pre-order Reverie here and be sure to follow Didi on Twitter and Facebook.

Michelle Williams’ ‘Journey To Freedom’: Album Review

Michelle Williams has always walked the line between mainstream R&B (the genre she conquered with Destiny’s Child) and gospel (her calling) with both grace and a certain amount of caution. On her fourth LP, however, both worlds collide. Journey To Freedom is an ambitious attempt at extending the scope of faith-based music by conveying the diva’s inspirational message through non-traditional means.

The starting point for most listeners will be “Say Yes” — the wig-whipping internet phenomenon that reunited Michelle with Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. Based on a Nigerian hymn, the turbo-charged floorfiller is equally appropriate for church or the club. The content is distinctly religious but the furious beat and slick production make it accessible to all-comers. It’s a nifty trick that the 34-year-old pulls off with astounding consistency on her best album to date.

I didn’t think it would be possible to top the aforementioned collaboration but the social media star does just that with “Yes”. A pretty mid-tempo ballad that explodes into a demented EDM adventure, the audacious anthem is breathtakingly original and distinctly non-preachy. Your iPod needs this. “In The Morning” is similarly disarming with its unexpected pop/rock production and soaring chorus.

Other highlights include the pure-pop anthem “Just Like You” and pretty synth-ballad “Everything”, which could just as easily be about a lover or family member as a religious figure. Not that Michelle is somehow hiding her agenda. “Beautiful” is the most traditional gospel ballad on Journey To Freedom, while the Lecrae-featuring “Fall” is a slick dose of Christian hip-hop. The gorgeously-produced “Need Your Help” is equally direct with its message but those bouncy synths broaden its appeal.

As for soul? The thinking man’s Destiny’s Child diva delivers with singles “If We Had Your Eyes” and “Fire” as well as the smooth mid-tempo track “Free”. In many ways, Journey To Freedom is the perfect bridge between the singer’s gospel and secular output. By focusing on universal themes (love, hope and inner strength) and exploring new genres, Michelle has created something both inclusive and joyously experimental.

Possible Future Singles: “Yes” is the most exciting and commercial track on the album but “Everything” is undeniably touching.

Best Listened To: When you need a lift.

Idolator Score: 4/5

As previously revealed, Boyz II Men will return this fall with a brand new album titled, Collide, which represents a unique progressive for the R&B icons and their 23-year career.

It’s expansive and it grooves.”

As a first taste of the album, “Better Half” and “Diamond Eyes” debuted on ABC’s hit romance reality series, “The Bachelorette,” in June, with lyric videos for each premiering shortly thereafter. Lorde's single for the soundtrack of the new movie The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1 is due September 29.

The singer revealed the news on Twitter, as well as the song's title: "Yellow Flicker Beat."

Lorde had already revealed one lyric from the song on Twitter a few weeks ago: "I'm a princess cut from marble/smoother than a storm."

Lorde is also curating the soundtrack of the film, which is due in November. So far, there's no word on when the soundtrack will be out or which artists she's selected, although The Lumineers' rep has said that the band will have a song on the album.

From Her first EP.

Jetta

From the first time she joined her mother on stage at an a cappella performance, to jamming with Pharrell on her latest single, music has always been a part of Jetta’s life. And now hers will be a central part of yours: The Liverpool-born, London-based songstress is gearing up for a break-out year after the April release of her solo debut Start A Riot.

You’ve certainly heard Jetta before, if not as the voice of Google “Here’s to 2013” spot then perhaps as backing vocals for the likes of Paloma Faith and Cee-Lo Green. But all soul with shades of synths and a resounding pop sensibility, her sound is entirely her own. The up and coming singer-songwriter took the time to answer all our questions about the industry, the new album, and her pick for Song of Summer 2014.

What is your first memory of music and/or writing, making, singing music?

It must have been when I was 3 or 4. Every weekend my mum and her 3 girlfriends would get together at our house, and sing in 4 part harmonies. I remember lying on the living room floor, eyes closed, listening to these beautiful voices, and taking it all in.

When did you decide to pursue music professionally?

I was pretty shy at first. The other kids at school would always ask me to sing to them. I’d make them face the other way. It was when I hit 16, that’s when I really got into the idea of pursuing music professionally. I holed myself up in my bedroom that summer and started writing songs. Then I put on my first show at a local bar in Liverpool. It was somewhere me and my friends used to hang out too. That night I realised nothing gave me such a buzz as being on stage did. I thought to myself, what’s the point in trying to find something else to do. I’ve found it!

What was it like growing up with musician parents? Were they encouraging of your professional interest in music?

I was totally immersed in music from an early age. I spent a lot of time hanging with my dad in the studio - he was an engineer and worked, sometimes for days, without sleep. For my 16th birthday, my mum gave me my first laptop and this music production program called Logic. I was so into it. It definitely encouraged me.

What was your first gig like?

My mum ran an a cappella choir. I was about 6 at the time and she started taking me along to choir rehearsals in the evenings. On the night of the show, right as they were about to sing, I got up on stage and joined in. I was this tiny person, with all these towering faces peering down at me. That was it really, from then on, I was part of the a cappella choir.

Was it difficult within the industry to move from being a back-up singer to a solo artist?

It wasn’t like that. I made no secret of the fact I was solo. I started backing singing as soon as I moved to London. It gave me the freedom I craved. I got to sing on stage with an amazing bunch of people, learning the ropes, whilst getting paid! I’ve loved every second.

When did you move to London from Liverpool? Has the move affected your music or writing?

I moved when I was 17. I didn’t even think twice about it. I was ready, and it was the best decision I ever made. I think wherever you’re from, it’s so important to venture out. I couldn’t have done any of this just sitting in my room. It all starts at the end of your comfort zone.

What attracted you to Republic Records for your debut?

A few things: Jason Flom, one of the head guys over there - he signed Katy Perry, Lorde, Jessie J… I love the fact they have a culture there whereby they work hand in hand with the artist creatively; and most importantly, they just ‘got’ me.

Do you have a favourite track off Start A Riot?

It depends what mood I’m in. Today is a “Start A Riot” kinda day.

“Feels Like Coming Home” was in Google’s “Here’s to 2013” spot. Can you tell us a bit about how that came about and what it was like to see the video for the first time?

I was rehearsing for a show in NY when I first saw it. I’m emotional enough as it is, so reliving some of the major events of 2013, with my song playing… that was overwhelming. I always say, life is one big rollercoaster with every emotion running through it. The Google video felt like that to me - it was a real bittersweet ride.

How did you write and record “Crescendo”?

It was super laid back. Pharrell and I got talking at first, about a whole bunch of stuff - music, what we did last weekend… Then the word Crescendo came up. We sat at the keyboard and got jamming. After that, I went into the booth and stacked a ton of vocals. Honestly, I was like a one woman choir in there. We wanted it to sound like a gang. Pharrell’s great at keeping things positive, whilst maintaining that cool sound. He brought out my bright side.

Do you have a prediction for Song of Summer 2014?

That Watermät track - “Bullit”.

Jetta’s debut EP, Crescendo, will be released by Polydor Records on 1 July.

Tracklist:
01 – Crescendo
02 – Operators
03 – Can You Hear Me Now
04 – Crescendo (Icarus Remix)

Randy Travis Announces Release Date for ‘Influence Vol. 2: The Man I Am’

Warner Music Nashville

Randy Travis is gearing up to release a new 13-track album, ‘Influence Vol. 2: The Man I Am,’ this August.

This album from the seven-time Grammy winner follows Vol. 1, which was released last year. Similar to the first, the ‘The Man I Am’ sequel will showcase in-studio cover performances from the singer and his band. On the record, Travis pays tribute to artists and songs that helped shape his legendary country career.

“We had such a great time putting together ‘Influence Vol. 1,’” the singer explains in a release, ”but there were still so many musical heroes of yesteryear that I learned from and wanted to honor. We had no choice but to release a second volume.”

“The ‘Influence’ that the older, great ones had on me, and the ‘Influence’ that I may, somehow, have on the ones that come along after me, is God’s way of allowing us to pay it forward,” adds Travis. “It is my prayer answered — and, His will don — it is what makes me, ‘the man I am.’”

Official news about Travis’ health has been quiet in 2014, save for “sources say” reports. In recent months, we’ve heard both that the singer is unable to speak following a stroke in 2013 and that he’s on the road to recovery and will return to the stage soon. Travis’ ‘Influence Vol. 2: The Man I Am’ hits Aug. 19.

Randy Travis, ‘Influence Vol. 2: The Man I Am’ Track Listing:

1. ‘I’m Moving On’
2. ‘Set ‘Em Up Joe’
3. ‘Are the Good Times Really Over?’
4. ‘Nearly Lose Your Mind’

John Coltrane's 'Offering: Live at Temple University'

In late 1966, months before he died, jazz’s greatest saxophonist played a sparsely attended college show, joined by wife Alice Coltrane on piano, Pharoah Sanders on blitzing tenor and time-bending drummer Rashied Ali. This full recording of the long-bootlegged set is a jazz grail: no tunes, just a sonic storming of the heavens (see “Leo”). It’s the sound of longing unbound.

TD3 thanks for the recent posts.

Diane just posted this: sad

Important Announcement from Diana: I’m deeply saddened that I will have to postpone the release of my new album ‘Wallflower” and the “Wallflower U.S Fall Tour” until next year. I’ve been battling a case of pneumonia and am under doctor’s orders to rest for the next few months in order to regain my strength and good health.

Performing is both a privilege and a joy for me. When I go out on stage I want to be able to give it everything. Taking this time to rest and recuperate will allow me to do that. It is frustrating to be so close to the record release and have to delay but I am very proud of this record and want to be able to give you all my very best when we finally present this music to you. Thank you so much for your understanding. – Diana Krall

Ella Henderson Unveils New GLORIOUS Ballad "Hard Work": Must-Listen!

"Chapter One" is going to be the album Leona Lewis wish she had recorded after "Spirit" (I just had to say this). Ella Henderson will be dropping her first studio album (Syco) on October 13th in the UK. I have loved ALL of the songs that have been premiered thus far (seven?) either released as official singles or buzz singles. With each new song that's premiered I've had the feeling that I've loved it more than the previous one. And in the case of the newly-premiered "Hard Work" it is no different. I think "Hard Work" is my favorite Ella song to date - until I hear the next one. The audio of the GLORIOUS ballad - written entirely by Ms. Henderson - was premiered on VEVO this Friday morning (Sept. 26) via a cute "promo" video Ella and her team put together. Watch/hear it below!!

"I know I'm not wasting my time / For you to be the reason I cry / And no I'm not gonna lie / You're hard work / But you're good for me", sings the immensely-talented Ella Henderson in the chorus of her new "Chapter One" song. "Hard Work" is a precious ballad where Ella sings about the ups and downs of a relationship and the feeling of joy when you feel that all the tough moments you and your partner have gone through have been worth it in the sense they have helped the relationship to be stronger and for them to realize they can't live without each other.

Ella reminds me to early Christina Aguilera in a very good way. I just believe everything she sings. And her vocals transmit so much emotion and TRUTH. "Chapter One" is going to be one of my favorite albums of the year, I know it, and I haven't heard it yet!!

ABBA to Release Landmark Concert ABBA – LIVE AT WEMBLEY ARENA on September 30, 2014

Features the complete November 10th, 1979 ABBA show, including the never before released track ‘I’m Still Alive’

July 22, 2014 10:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--By the time ABBA played London’s Wembley Arena in November 1979, they had spent five years in the public spotlight – although it seems a short time now, they had lived several lives in that period. Comprising of writers Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and the incomparable vocals of Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, ABBA shot to international fame by winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton UK in 1974. From that moment on, they had moved through the glam’n’glitter of Arrival, the megastardom of ABBA - The Album and the gloss and embracing of disco of Voulez-Vous.

ABBA’s concerts in London at the end of the 70s – the decade that they helped to shape musically – quickly became the stuff of legend. For a group that toured only a handful of times, these shows were a pinnacle, coming near the end of their touring life. Backstage they would have admirers such as Ian Dury, Joe Strummer (‘Spanish Bombs’ from the Clash’s London Calling was said to be influenced by ABBA) and Jimmy Page dropping by to catch the hottest ticket in town. John Cleese was spotted in the auditorium.

The tour had opened in Edmonton, Canada in September 1979 and was to close in Dublin on November 15th. ABBA loved being in London (Frida wore an Arsenal FC shirt one night), fighting off winter chills to deliver some of the most exhilarating performances of their career. Coinciding with the release of their Greatest Hits Volume 2 album, this was high-octane ABBA, captured forever in the legendary pictures of the event with Frida and Agnetha appearing initially in Nordic outfits that referenced ‘blue-tinged mountains and glittering waters’ before all four emerged in their blue jumpsuits, singing as if their life depended upon it.

When ABBA took the stage, their experience and professionalism showed. Audiences and critics were astounded that ABBA could reproduce their studio sound live – and sometimes it swung even more. The backing musicians were Sweden’s best and most experienced. Although principally promoting their recent Voulez-Vous album, the set covered highlights throughout their career and contained a rare performance of Agnetha’s ‘I’m Still Alive,’ unreleased on any album. It is now time to hear ABBA at the peak of their live performance again on ABBA – LIVE AT WEMBLEY ARENA. The concert is available on a handsome 25-track double-CD set, and on a 180gm beautiful triple vinyl, produced by Ludvig Andersson.

ABBA – LIVE AT WEMBLEY ARENA is now available for pre-order via Amazon and iTunes.

In conjunction with the release of ABBA – LIVE AT WEMBLEY ARENA is ABBA — The Official Photo Book, which launches on September 23rd (Weldon Owen) in the United States. This first and only official book on ABBA was created with the full cooperation of the band members themselves and contains more than 600 rare and heretofore unseen images from throughout the band’s career. Publishing with the 40th anniversary of ABBA winning the Eurovision Song Contest, which is what put the band on the map, with a foreword and commentary throughout the book by the band’s four members, this is truly the complete story of one of the most popular bands of all time.

ABBA / Live at Wembley Arena

ABBA / Live at Wembley Arena

A new ABBA live album will be released this September as part of the group’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. ABBA Live at Wembley Arena presents the complete concert at the famous London venue from 10 November 1979.

The headline news is that this release brings us a ‘new’ ABBA song called I’m Still Alive. This track was performed on the night but never released commercially anywhere. Unusually, it’s a collaboration between Agnetha (music) and Bjorn (lyrics). The full track listing for the concert is below. If you are wondering what Gammal Fäbodpsalm is, it’s an instrumental piece of music (written by Swedish composer Oskar Lindberg) used to open the concerts.

Live at Wembley Arena will be issued on 29 September 2014 as a two CD set and a 3LP vinyl edition.

Released on September 29th, the 50 St Catherine’s Drive album, named by Robin to commemorate his first home on the Isle of Man, features many of Robin’s last compositions and recordings as a solo artist.

Isle of Man Post Office in partnership with Robin Gibb’s widow, Dwina Gibb and Warner/Reprise Records, has released a unique collection that combines a CD of Robin’s final solo album, 50 St Catherine’s Drive, together with an Isle of Man Post Office limited edition DVD, a special booklet containing an extract from Robin’s biography and a booklet containing a full set of Robin Gibb stamps. This special limited edition of 1000 also contains an insert signed by Dwina Gibb and postmarked with a special silver foil cancellation for September 29th 2014. 50 St Catherine’s Drive is of great significance in that it was the former home of the Gibb family in Douglas, Isle of Man. In April 2013 the address was recognised by Douglas Borough Council as the childhood home of Robin Gibb and his brothers, and was commemorated with a blue plaque on the front door.

Dwina Gibb said: “Robin-John and I are delighted that the Isle of Man Post Office is releasing this wonderful special edition of Robin's final solo album. Robin always loved the Isle of Man and he would have been especially pleased with this commemorative album, DVD and stamp package produced in the place of his birth.”

Freda Payne – Come Back To Me Love

Freda Payne - Come Back to Me Love (2014)

With her latest album, Come Back to Me Love, Freda Payne comes full circle. It is an album of jazz and pop standards - the kind of songs that Payne grew up hearing and singing in her home town of Detroi, and the kind that were featured on Payne’s first recordings in the early 1960s.

Payne’s early career bears some similarities to Aretha Franklin, another daughter of Detroit who found moderate success recording tunes from the Great American Songbook canon before her soul music ship came in. Franklin’s transition to R&B and soul music was far more successful than Payne’s, but with “Band of Gold,” Payne struck gold on a song that remains a mainstay on Top 40 and oldies radio since it was released in 1970. The sweet-voiced Payne managed to do something that the Queen of Soul never achieved by running afoul of the government when the Department of Defense sought to ban her Vietnam War protest song “Bring the Boys Home.”

Payne has had a distinguished career as a singer, actress, talk show host and speaker of truth to power. And she has remained busy through her recent 70th birthday, impressing soul, jazz and even pop audiences. Many heard her most recently on “Saving a Life,” her duet with Cliff Richard, on the latter’s 2011 album Soullicious. A video of the performance reveals that Payne singes in a lower register than in her “Band of Gold Days.” Those deeper, expressive vocals are well suited for the standards and pop tunes populating Come Back to Me Love.

The lushly arranged album features a good mix of often recorded songbook tunes, some under-recorded and underappreciated gems and blues and R&B cuts that Payne probably heard in her parents’ house and the clubs of post war Detroit. That mixture gives the tunes on Come Back to Me Love a familiar feel that manages to avoid becoming stale from over use.

A couple of my favorite moments come when the glamorous Payne shows that she willing to swim in the blues. The first comes on a smoky rendition of “Save Your Love For Me,” and she confirms that her soul chops remain sharp on her rendition of “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water.” That classic fusion of jazz, blues and R&B was made famous by Lou Rawls, and Payne endows the tune with the necessary sassiness.

Payne sprinkles the right mixture of Broadway glitz and melodramatic longing on the torchy “I Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry,” and her vocals on “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” match the orchestra’s energetic swing. And the R&B arrangement of “I Just Have To Know,” again confirms that Payne remains comfortable working in that genre; it is a song that should absolutely get picked up Urban Adult Contemporary radio.

Payne gets cast as a one hit wonder because she never again approached the level of success that she attained with “Band of Gold.” However, the qualities that made that tune a success were the things Payne learned singing jazz – phrasing, intonation and the overall control of her vocal instrument. Those qualities serve Payne well on this musical return to her roots and makes Come Back to Me Love, a thoroughly enjoyable reintroduction to this music legend. Recommended.

Gladys Knight - Where My Heart Belongs (2014)

gladys_knight-heart.jpg
Click on CD cover
to listen or purchase

There are plenty of artists who made their mark singing secular music and would have their motivations for making a gospel record questioned. The legendary Gladys Knight, who has released her gospel project Where My Heart Belongs, is not one of those performers.

Knight’s reputation as a performer who never compromised in terms of the quality or message of her songs, both while fronting Gladys Knight & the Pips and as a solo performer, affords her a high level of credibility. Knight recorded gospel songs before, and won two Grammys in the gospel category – one for a duet with Ray Charles and a second for the album One Voice that she recorded with the LDS Saints Unified Voices.

Knight even recorded two inspirational songs written by Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch. And let’s be real. Church folk don’t vacate the premises when the DJ at the family reunion plays “Midnight Train To Georgia,” “With Every Beat of My Heart,” “Love Overboard,” or “Papa Could Swear,” at the family reunion. Her music – religious or secular – is about as close to universally loved as an entertainer can get.

So, Knight is an American institution, and any qualms Knight fans or gospel music fans have with the record won’t be related to genre. Knight, who added a touch of Memphis to her version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” and provided additional heat to torch songs such as “If I Was Your Woman,” does not give listeners what they expect on Where My Heart Belongs.

Where My Heart Belongs has more of a contemporary Christian feel than the gospel music that has its roots in the blues and evolved over the years within largely black denominations such as the Missionary Baptists and the Church of God in Christ. Knight joined the Church of Latter Day Saints in the 1990s. Knight created the Grammy winning Saints Unified Voices to – as she jokingly told the late LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinkley - bring a little pep to the music. The LDS has a history of excellent music, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is one of the world’s best and recognizable choral ensembles.

The music on Where My Heart Belongs shows that the LDS church has been as much of an influence on Knight and her music and she has had on the music of that denomination through her leadership of Saints Unified Voices. That can be heard most clearly in Knight’s rendition of the spiritual “Where You There,” which receives the full orchestral treatment on Where My Heart Belongs. Some will believe that the bass drums, brass, strings and tight backing harmonies add drama to the story of Christ’s crucifixion. Others might think all of that orchestration is holding Knight back. I tend to fall into the second camp.

That is especially true after hearing the album’s one up-tempo track, “Life Song,” as well as the R&B infused gospel ballad “In The Midst of the Rain. “ The former sports an arrangement that might remind some long time Knight fans of some of her best work in the 1980s (“Love Overboard” comes immediately to mind.) Any thought that the 70 year old Knight might be slowing down vocally are dismissed after hearing the energy she brings to this tune. The choir also proves that it has no trouble handling flourishes often associated with gospel such as call and response. “In the Midst of the Rain,” is a Christian love song that gives listeners another chance to remember that Knight remains one her generation’s greatest ballad singers.

The restrained nature of Where My Heart Belongs works on many of the tracks partly because Knight remains an excellent singer, the songs are lyrically strong and because the musicians are as restrained as the vocalist. That is the case with tunes such as “I Need You” and the sparse and hauntingly beautiful duet “There is a Green Hill Far Away,” a tune that describes that hill where Christ was crucified and then flows seamlessly into Knight singing the opening lines of “Old Rugged Cross.”

Where My Heart Belongs challenges the expectations and perceptions of long time Knight fans as well as lovers of urban gospel. However, Where My Heart Belongs represents the place where this soulful elder stateswoman resides spiritually and artistically. It is different, but different does not mean bad. It just means different. Recommended.

Tiê’s Enchanting Brazilian Folk Pop

Bands We Like: Tiê’s Enchanting Brazilian Folk Pop

Brazilian singer-songwriter Tiê’s music could be described as a collaboration between Cat Power and Caetano Veloso. In fact, that’s just how we described it when we included her in our top ten list of exciting artists heading to SXSW in Austin this year.

Her introspective ballads are characterized by complex textures that marry modern indie folk songwriting to Brazil’s own psych folk tradition. And her voice is the clear, warm, and unaffected kind that casts spells. Her compositions for acoustic guitar or piano can be sweet and Beatles classic, or cool and plaintive. Or, as in the case of “A Bailarina e o Astronauta,” they can be all of those things. She draws comparisons to Brazilian Bossa Nova singers like Elis Regina and iconoclastic songwriters from Syd Barrett to Elliott Smith.

In case you were wondering, yes, Tiê has done some modeling. She’s also studied public relations and music and owned a thrift store/restaurant in São Paulo, all before she started making music. That started in 2007 when she recorded a four song EP. She started touring solo the following year and released her debut album Sweet Jardim in 2009. Listening to the songs on Sweet Jardim, it’s clear she’s found her real calling. Check out her song “Assinado Eu.” (Signed, Me) The only way a song like that could not completely alter your mood is if you were already in an exquisitely pensive and tender frame of mind. Hopefully, her spin through Austin this month will help to bring her enchanting music to a much wider audience.
