Van Hunt Announces New Album via Pledge Music!

Van Hunt has new album coming out that he annoucned today via Pledge Music. All sorts of goodies to be had! As well as behind the scene footage and features AS the album is being recorded!

Sounds like Van is going more of a funk filled soul album. I can not wait to hear it! One of the BEST in the music industry today!

Van Hunt on the new album:

A few months ago, I began rummaging through my music collection and paging through old magazines. I found myself rediscovering great music (The Delfonics, Parliament-Funkadelic, Pink Floyd and Billie Holiday) and unearthing the creations of artists such as Givenchy and Halston. I became transfixed, spending late nights immersed in these brilliant treasures; I re-emerged reinvigorated and inspired.

That exploration has given rise to an album that chronicles love, loss and nostalgia delivered through the sounds of original funk and old soul. It’s the sounds and experiences of the past reflected through a contemporary lens.

If you pre-Order the album now you get all the behind the scenes footages and other goodies!

Agreed. I love Van, but it was like he stopped writing melodies.

Wow, I agree...Popular was not good despite the hype...maybe undergroundish hype. I love the first two albums though.

I am going to finally venture out and buy a CD of VH, he's been doing enough good work over these years that I should jump on board.

Popular had some good tunes on it, some that weren't as good, but still some good stuff. He hadn't gone completely avant garde by that point, and there was one balland on there that was amazing (can't remember the name, lost my copy of Popular sad )

Well I have mixed emotions on Van Hunt mainly because he came out at a time or at least he was signed at a time where, escpecially here in NYC and alot of little clubs there was alot of "roots" type building of artists. it was before Facebook and Twitter exploded, people were still on "Myspace" but that was never a media HYPE machine, so things were all still word of mouth, "did you hear about so and so", this was mainly how two years prior in 2002 that Norah Jones and her band went from selling a $5 demo at gigs for a few years to getting signed by Blue Note, debuting at #139 and then taking over the scene, all without the age of social media. And others that were in that realm were, Amos Lee, Jesse Harris, Richard Julian and many others doing that small club thing and releasing records too. So when Van released his debut, many of us in the "music retail" world when it still existed were working with reps at labels we all took pride in pushing someone "small scale" we all did it with Norah, but in speaking with reps that the label would send around, Van was a little bit more on the difficult side, not wanting to do certain promo for them that they would line up etc... the album still got notice and we all loved it, and did what we could with what we could, but as time wore on, things changed on the scene labels were shrinking more, reps were let go, PUSH was disappearing. But VAN still after that didnt become what I thought he would, i always saw him being a well of output, kind of RB funk version of Ryan Adams who was and still has done the most albums over the last 15 years, but Van somehow fell way short, there were gaps between records, promises, non releases etc..that took away from him as an artist to me at least

You are correct, it never got an official release.
It was leaked tho, I forget the exact details.
I've yet to hear it myself.

Then whole issue with "Popular" was a strange one. After a big shake up with Capitol, Van was moved over to Blue Note. From there I'm not sure what happened... I know Van had clashed with Capitol before over the sound of his albums. I believe he was actually signed in 2000. But, due to creative differences. He didn't release his debut album until 2004.

Popular was set to be released in January 2008. There was a release date, cover art was released, singles, promotion was done, etc. Then all of sudden, they just shelved it! They claimed it wasn't commercial sounding enough. Which is an odd statement, coming from the jazz heavy Blue Note. And songs like "Turn My TV On" and "The Lowest 1 of My Desires" had big potential in the R&B markets. But they shelved it, and dropped Van from the label. Van tried to buy the album back from Blue Note, so he could sell it indepently. But, Blue Note wouldn't sell the album to Van for a price he could afford.

The album quickly leaked due to some radio promo albums that Blue Note had already sent out. And it was heavily spread from there onto the internet. You can probably find the album with a simple google search.

It his best album in my opinion. A brilliant avant grade funk/soul album. The album is also a lyrical gem. Telling a heart wrenching story of a break up of when a man's women leaves him for another women. The man goes back forth from I hate you to I love you. Eventually just going insane. With songs like "Ur a Monster Parts 1 & 2", "Bits & Pieces" and "Finale: It All Ends in Tears" (well... at least that's my interruption lol). A must have album in my opinion!

Really looking forward to his new album! Musically it sounds like he's going back that soul/funk sound his earlier albums had. Although, I did love and appreciated the change in direction that "What Were You Hoping For?" brought.

Funny thing is that there is a quote from Van after the "popular" shelving and he said "I don't think Blue Note has the money to properly promote the album" which is odd because ONE he avoided some promo when with Capitol and TWO Blue Note made billions off Norah Jones and is set for life just releasing catalog stuff

Oh my post was not about "popular". I dug it. I even liked "Use in Case Of Emergency".

But when I heard "What Were You Hoping For?", my fandom came to a screeching halt.

I was psyched for it, pre-ordered it (got the signed CD as well), then, well, reality set in and it was too drastic of a departure for my tastes so i fell off the bandwagon.

The CD is still in its post pack in a cupboard somewhere, as i got the digital album at the get go.

So i'll listen to the tracks this time before laying down the $.

Popular is a great album IMO. I really enjoyed seeing him perform songs off his last album and I'm looking forward to his new one.

When I first heard "what were you hoping for?" I was not feelin it. at all. then after a few months I listened to it again, and it completely grew on me. Now it's my one of my favorite albums. I think the sound takes some getting used to especially if you're a fan of his previous 3 albums, but seriously it's good.
