Mariah Carey Fires Manager Jermaine Dupri

Mariah Carey is on to the next one.

The “elusive chanteuse” has parted ways with her manager Jermaine Dupri. The So So Def mogul confirmed the split in a statement to Billboard.

“I’m a very hands-on person when it comes to my work,” said J.D. “I put my all into every project. But when I’m not allowed to do what I do, then I know it’s time for me to move on. Mariah and I enjoy working together and will continue to make great music together in the future.”

Dupri has produced some of Carey’s biggest hits including “We Belong Together” and “Always Be My Baby,” and served as the executive producer of her latest album, Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse.

The announcement comes in the wake of the disappointing sales of Chanteuse. Despite its critical acclaim, the album has only sold 103,000 copies since its May 27 release, and has fallen off the Billboard 200 after just eight weeks.

In an interview with Rap-Up, J.D. defended the sales. “I actually feel like it’s probably one of her best albums she’s ever made,” he said. “I’m excited to see where the album ends up. I tell a lot of people, this era of music and this genre, they don’t understand records that come out small and sell a lot of records.”

According to Billboard, Carey has been working closely with Kevin Liles, who manages Trey Songz and Ty Dolla $ign. While nothing official has been inked, the two recently collaborated on the launch of Go N’Syde’s Carey-branded Butterfly beverage.

And it won't help her one little bit, Jermaine is not her biggest problem, (assuming she has one),.... Her time is OVA in the mainstream light and time to move on to the next phase of her career, IF she can accept that... That is the more interesting topic --- how she handles/ navigates this time in her musical career.

I never understood why someone would choose a music producer to be their manager nuts It makes no sense. Those are two different things.

You and Nammie are both right. She's basically throwing JD under the bus to save face. Mariah never challenged herself artistically and the whole diva persona has been copied, used and re-used by so many female artists that it's not such a novelty anymore. I said it before and I'll say it again, her career really started to tank when she got with Nick Cannon but HIS career got way better! lol

So happy she gave JD the boot. Now, I wish she would completely jettison the forced sexpot act and find a producer capable of helping her forge a fresh artistic vision and sound.

Time for her to move on to a new label, too. Obviously, she is not a priority at Def Jam.

If I'm not mistaken, this was her last record she owed Def Jam.

Who didn't see that coming right?! lol As far as the unstimulating sexpot/forever teenage girl image (rainbows, charmbracelets & butterflies oh my), maybe she can get a revelation about that not working too while she's on a roll razz

Mariah Carey fires Jermaine Dupri after album flop

If Lady Gaga's ARTPOP was the most mismanaged album from a major pop diva last year, then this year's biggest bomb belongs to Mariah Carey's Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse. With sales of under 100,000 copies and a terrible promotional campaign that messed everything up from single releases to promo and everything in between, it's no surprise to learn that Mariah has now said sayonara to her manager and long-time musical collaborator, Jermaine Dupri.

According to Billboard magazine, Mimi is now working with Kevin Liles, who was the president of Def Jam during the diva's tenure at the label (a time that yielded the 12-million selling The Emancipation of Mimi). In a statement to Billboard, Dupri said, "I'm a very hands-on person when it comes to my work. I put my all into every project. But when I'm not allowed to do what I do, then I know it's time for me to move on." He continued, "Mariah and I enjoy working together and will continue to make great music together in the future."

This is third major management change that Mariah has undergone in the past year-and-a-half alone, signalling just how unstable her career has become. Things really started going bad around the time she released the non-charting "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" in late 2012, and then started getting worse with her messy stint on American Idol, a public feud with Nicki Minaj, more flop singles, and now The Elusive Chanteuse debacle.

Words of wisdom, one can only hope Ms. Carey comes to ^ this conclusion very soon.

Artistically, it's a good album. You'll mostly hear people criticize her age and presentation above anything else.

I knew something was up when every post she made was about the new drink, not the new album.

It's still new! We're not even out of summer, and it dropped the end of May.

Maybe she could land a role in the Expendables 3. Oh, wait. They don't hire women over 27 to be there with the 60 year old guys! lol

It looks like she has. She never even bothered to promote this album. Her fans have been mad because she's been posting pics of her kids. I know you and others like the desperate diva angle. Truth is, she ditched the album before it even came out

That, and she's trying to contend with the Beyonces and Rihannas in the industry, when in reality she's superior to them. Perhaps this hugely embarrassing disaster of an album is the wake-up call she needs to break free of complacency and stagnation.

You know, I've NEVER thought I say this, but Mariah's music career was a lot better when Tommy Mottola was her handler. And this is coming from the same TVD that ranks Tommy at second runner-up behind Jimmy Iovine & Clive Davis for most dangerous record label CEO ever! neutral

I had the same thought a while back, Tony. Seems like Mottola knew exactly how to market Mariah and it worked. But, her early 90s stuff was pretty repetitive and predictable but she was more of a commercial success.

Mariah Carey wrote her songs in the Tommy Motolla era, and she writes them now.

I don't think she is the kind of person that needs new writers, but I like when she works with certain producers that don't do hip hop, like James "Big Jim" Wright (who is on Elusive Chanteuse, if you guys would ever listen to the album rolleyes ) and Walter Afanasieff (who did her earliest albums but also stuff as recent as 2010's Merry Christmas II You).

I tell people that all the time. They don't realize that Mariah has always written her songs. And this is a great album! I hate how the promotion was jacked up.
