A new documentary that focuses on David Bowie Is, the expansive exhibit that celebrates the influential British rocker, will be screened in theaters across the U.S. on September 23, the same day the display opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

The movie, titled David Bowie Is Happening Now, was produced by London's Victoria & Albert Museum, which curated the exhibition and hosted its premiere run last year.

The film delves into the stories behind many of the fascinating items included in the exhibit, and how they connect to Bowie's career and the creative evolution of his work. The documentary, which was filmed at the Victoria & Albert Museum during the closing night of the display's London run, features interviews with several Bowie collaborators.

David Bowie Is features more than 300 items from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's archives, including stage costumes, handwritten set lists and lyrics, personal sketches, diary entries and more. It also showcases films, music videos and photographs.

Following the exhibit's London run, it subsequently visited museums in Toronto, Sao Paulo and Berlin. It's scheduled to remain in Chicago until January 4, 2015, after which it will head to Paris.

Tickets for the David Bowie Is Happening Now screenings are on sale now. Check out a list of theaters where the film is being shown at OmniverseVision.com.
