Producer/Engineer Ian Cross talks Janet's upcoming album

[img:$uid]http://barefootsound.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Cross_Barefoot_40-1024x725.jpg[/img:$uid]Here are the bits where he speaks about her album.
Cross: They absolutely do. In fact, Janet and I were sitting in this very room together and I was about to play her the Barefoots for the first time. I started playing a song called “I Get So Lonely,” and she stopped me and said, “Where is the low end coming from?” I said, “The speaker, that’s what you’re listening to.” She said, “Those speakers are the only thing we’re listening to right now?” I said, “That’s just the speakers.” She was instantly sold.
This was also during a time when Janet was not in one place at one time for very long. The Janet Jackson’s of the world can’t just spend their time in one studio in one city anymore. They’re schedules just demand it, so we had to put together a portable studio that we could take anywhere in the world. The second she heard these speakers I said, “This is my choice for our speakers for the album and we can take them everywhere, to every studio anywhere in the world, and we’re going to consistently hear the sound the way we want to hear it.” She agreed.
Barefoot Sound: You’ve been working in Qatar?
Cross: We’ve been working in Qatar. We’ve been working in Paris, the Middle East, and now we feel like we can work anywhere. With the Barefoots and our little system that we have it’s a very powerful setup.

Barefoot Sound: So now you can remove all the doubts and second guessing while moving from place to place. It makes a lot of sense. How’s the new album coming along?
Cross: The new album is going to be great. It’s a process. There’s a lot in store, yet to come. I can’t go into too many details but I think Janet Jackson’s fans are going to be very excited about the new album, and I think people who don’t know her as fans are going to be excited about it, too. The new paradigm of music, the real people in music now, are blending technology and music together. It’s becoming more and more seamless.
I find that the direction, not just of the music, but the concept of making albums is changing and developing so quickly and rapidly. We’re going to be doing things that are completely unexpected that nobody’s seen before. We apply that to the music in the album itself and that’s why we only want to work with the best of the best. We’re bringing in some of the best people on the planet to work on this record. We’ve got the best rig, the best speakers, and we’re doing a lot of new and interesting things. We’re hoping to do some really interesting things with Barefoot too by the way. It’d be really nice to find some ways to expand and extend our relationship.
Barefoot Sound: Well, it sounds like the Barefoot monitors are the one common element in your mixture of old school API console, analog gear, and classic microphone, all combined with the latest digital technology.
Cross: That’s right, absolutely. Again, I feel the Barefoots give us the most accurate representation of what we’re doing at any time. It doesn’t leave me or Janet with any second guessing. There is something special when the artist you’re working with is really, really comfortable with the way their voice sounds. I can tell you Janet’s voice sounds completely marvelous on these speakers. I feel like before Barefoot there was no speaker that really presented her voice correctly, because she has so much detail, even when you’re around the 11 or 12K range that makes her voice really special. Yes, I think it’s the happiest she’s ever been. It’s certainly the happiest we’ve ever been with monitoring and listening to the music we’ve been working on.

Don't get me in here acting silly now! That's great to hear. Not familiar with Ian Cross gotta look up his engineering work. Sounds like she's really putting the effort into this project. At this point, she should have a lot to say musically. Glad she's not rushing things. As long as she doesn't get into that Stevie, Lauryn, D'angelo zone I should be fine waiting for her lol

Thanks for posting Happy. I just finished reading the whole article. There's some interesting things in there.

Dude said, "I got to sit next to Jimmy for a number of years and he was like the Ph.D. in learning how to get what you needed vocally from a singer."

-

Although he won a Grammy for that Usher record, "Raymond vs. Raymond", I still say Janelle Monae was robbed that year only because she was new to the Grammy voters.

-

I'm really excited to hear that she's going no holds barred with this record:

-

"and that’s why we only want to work with the best of the best. We’re bringing in some of the best people on the planet to work on this record. We’ve got the best rig, the best speakers, and we’re doing a lot of new and interesting things."

You'd think a chick who married an alleged billionaire wouldn't need to do ads for studio equipment.

My man was hinting pretty hard for some type of relationship with Barefoot Sound. Wasn't shy about it now was he? Maybe he was just looking out for himself. He sounds like he's independent, not tied to a team. Sounds like Janet just hires him for when she's working, dude gotta eat lol

Co-sign.

.

I was reading it like "oh i gotta hear this Barefoots group if Janet digs it"... "I wonder if "I get so lonely" is like a cover of "i get lonely" dude couldn't even get her song title right OR got it wrong on purpz for some shifty reason.

.

He looks well-fed to me, maybe sell some of that equipment instead of selling out your big client lol

I think we're getting closer to some actual new music from her. I hope she just drops it... No manufactured fanfare, no pre-release hype (although articles like these COULD be seen as such). I guess I'm hoping the music would just speak for itself. Now, if its a hit and all the media wants to talk about her new HIT SINGLE, because that's what people are talking about.... that's something different lol

-

I think it would make a bigger statement that way. Please no lame announcement of a surprise coming about a surprise (I see ya .....) wink

Call me a cynic but its an advertisement. Maybe his discography just hasnt been updated recently idk. Hardly anything official but sorta presented as jacking her swag. This fella is hardly active so this content could also be severly dated. Now we know more about the speakers they use to make forgettable formulaic records...? Can we hold them to that? http://www.allmusic.com/a...99/credits

Sounds as appetizing as the shit out of my ass. I prefer less talk when it comes to new releases, not release of this bullshit lol I'll believe it when I hear it.

She's 48. That's not possible. Make Me was her best song since The Velvet Rope era I'd be happy if it has a handful of tracks as good as that.

lol I wouldn't fall for that Tweet. I'm sure Mr. Cross was scolded, but we ALL know that Janet is one of the most secretive celebs alive. You never know what she's doing until it's out there. What I do know is that she's in Greece with Gil, her trainer Tony and her make-up guy Preston, and she has been working with engineer Ian Cross and various other producers pver the past year.

Janet play too much! I had my hopes up and everything. But like you said she is very secretive about everything it seems. That's one of the reasons I love and respect her tho. When she does come I will be ready to support. I love me some JANET!

everybody working on this project has tweeted about it except janet, this is the downside to social media. i agree with her not wanting to give every detail and get fans expectations all hyped.i had no idea what was going on while she was working on any of her albums until she hooked up with jd.

This is so true. When she was with JD everything was so public. It seems like she has when back to the old Janet. Which is find with me.
