Nice list, but strange that you picked "Tragedy" instead of "Stayin Alive", the latter was pretty much the biggest and most popular disco song at the time..

Hi thanks.. "Stayin Alive" by Bee Gees is on there as well - song #45... wink

The reason why "Tragedy" by Bee Gees is on my iTunes list as song #1, is the song is #1 on one of the CD compilations these songs are taken from..

In other words, the order of the songs, is "pure coincidense"....

I agree with you, that song by MJ was a huge disco hit in '79,

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, this was one of my first 7 inch singles I bought, actually.

I was 13-14 back then, buying vinyl singles.... wow, memories.. biggrin

True. I just listed what I thought were the most obvious disco songs, and I even missed some of them. doh! There were others that I omitted because they were dumb novelty songs (Disco Duck anyone?) and others, particularly those in the 1973 to 1976 period and those after 1980 that were really funk and R&B songs. But I forgot this gem:

Heart of Glass - Blondie

There were other non-disco artists that released danceable pop tunes that got lumped in as disco but were really not. "Miss You" by the Rolling Stones is often listed as disco but is really a funk rock track. And "I Was Made For Loving You" by Kiss was just a really bad pop track. And "I Keep Forgettin'" by Michael McDonald was really a funky pop track that was also released after 1980 that got a lot of play on the dance floor.

Both were classified as DISCO (written on their covers), back when released on vinyl 12 inches...

I own them both in 8 minutes versions ------ but are these really "disco".. question

What some people think of as disco is really Eurodisco or Barry White and Philadelphia International style music with lush orchestration and a lot of high hat. But many people just considered any dancable music as disco. A lot of it was late 1970's R&B or funk, which is what some of the Bee Gees stuff was. Other than the title, Disco Lady technically isn't really a disco song. I've seen disco compilations with Black Betty by Ram Jam on them, and I don't know what's disco about that at all. It's like southern rock. lol

SoulAlive

One of the best disco songs is "Souvenirs" by Voyage (1978) music

Look it up on youtube.....it's a sensational track.....a somber melody mixed with lush instrumentation and a relentless beat.

^ nonsense... you do like disco, but don't you like Bee Gees? eek

"Tragedy" is a great disco track (back in 1979 I believe the song was a number 1 hit on the charts also),

Btw, like I wrote in reply #3. The songs are not ranked, like number 1 on the list is "the best" song.

The order of the songs is to some degree, made from the CD's, and the order is... random.

"Tragedy", well "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" are better known, but still "Tragedy" - it is a fantastic disco track, isn't it, can't we agree......? boogie

I am not sure why you wrote that sour remark.....

Bee Gees
wrote some of the most acclaimed disco songs, actually they defined disco in the late 70's... right?

I chose myself what I think are the greatest 100 disco songs - in random order, some from:

Disco Fever vol 1 (2CD)..:

http://www.discogs.com/Va...se/2558675

some from:

Disco Fever vol 2 (2CD)..:

http://www.discogs.com/Various-Disco-Fever-2/release/3678454

Plus,

I added a lot more.... from a few more compilations........

Bette Midler "My Knight In Black leather",
Amii Stewart "Light My Fire",
Ritz "Locomotion",

These weren't big disco hits afaik in the US, but these were huge in Europe afaik, at least they were huge in Denmark where I live. Back in 1979.

Not to include Michael Jackson "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" is clearly a mistake. And I agree "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" is great disco as well..........
