Rick Springfield-- My Depression (What a great song!!!)

I think this is the best song ever written about someone's personal struggle with depression, especially in the few minutes that it plays. In fact, Rick Springfield's entire album entitled Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance is easily his best and strongest in his career, in my opinion. I just recently started listening to him again after I--late to the plate, as usual rolleyes--discovered his 2012 album Songs For The End of the World. But, as much as I love that album, this one is even better.

If people haven't checked out Rick's newer albums, they should. I like 'em way better than the '80s stuff. Plus, I went to one of his concerts recently and he is terrific with the full band... Now, if they would just play more of the recent catalogue than the old hits (sound familiar?) lol

I love Rick, and I saw him live last year, his first UK gig in two decades!

Definitely agree, shock/denial is a great and very under-rated record. I slightly prefer "Songs For The End..." but they are both fantastic records.

Have you read his autobiography? Such a great read!

Yes, I bought his autobiography right after I heard Songs For The End of the World. I really love Songs For The End... But today is the first day I heard shock/denial. He is a great writer and I agree with what one critic said about his first novel which he just published that Rick is "a novelist who happens to be a rock star." Check out Great Vibration...it reminds me of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, which accompanied a terrific road trip in my younger daze... wink

Rick to me since his return to Music in 1998 has been the most consistent artist with his releases and live shows. Have seen him 20+ times and he always delivers, one of the best shows was last November here in NYC at the City Winery, "Stripped Down" shows where Rick and his guitar and Laptop, yes Laptop, performed. Amazing set of songs some never ever played live, told stories of their recordings etc...

"SHOCK" is an amazing LOUD album he says it too, he has said that he has never heard anything that loud before, it was just an in your face type record, and that one took him a log time to record, a little over a year he has said, but it was him doing it all pretty much. For the next too albums which i think rank as the best albums being released by anyone. "Venus In Overdrive" and "Songs For the End of the World" I can listen too any time any where straight through, the writing is top notch, the playing, his guitar work (VERY UNDERRATED) and his band kicks ass!

And then him LIVE he is a touring machine, non stop dates constantly pop up, whether its him by himself, or a full band, or some dates this summer with Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo. And with 2 books written, a book tour for the latest one, still popping up doing acting, and just getting his star on the HWOF, in person this guy is 100% genuine, you will never meet a better down to earth guy in the business. Oh yeah and he's 65 you'd think seeing him that he was a kid.

Rick has had a few labels put on him that were not deserved ONE would be that he was a ONE hit wonder, this I have heard a few times, and even OPRAH in the later 90's early 00's did a show on ONE hit wonders and they called RICK to appear, who declined politely mentioning he had 17 top 40 hits. Years later OPRAH had him back in a different forum. The SECOND would be that he was an actor who happend to sing, this mainly was just a timing thing, he had been doing acting jobs in the later 70's between record deals, and just after he finished "working class dog" and it hit shops he got a gig on "genera hospital" which just happend to be THE IT SHOW that summer, but his music career started way back in 1971 and his first hit was in 1972 hitting the Top 20.

the biography is very interesting alot i had known but alot i didnt, its been an interesting road for him. One standout for me was the incident that started when he came to the USA, his single "speak to the sky" was climbing the charts and his album was out and selling, and then a rumour started that CAPITOL was pretty much having young teenage girls come to stores, busing them in, and selling them the records, turned out the rumour was about another artist on the label but it got put on RICK because he was overseas and not there so the album disappeared and Rick had this label of not being "Legit" from day one on him. Its funny because those "gimmicks and payola" is now the norm in the industry, out and the open. RICK got hit with it, because he was new and had an immediate hit and hit album so "it was suspect" TODAY everyone HAS to have a hit right away funny the times.

Never heard it, but it's a good song. Might need to look into it.

Not a big fan. I only go up to his "rock of life" album, which is kind of dark lyrically for a melodic AOR album LOL. Shame he stopped for a long time after that. Was it burnout? Also, because of the long gap, this album seems kinda forgotten about. Maybe abit too much like "Tao" part 2?

Heres "World starts turning" anyway, one of my favs from him. Killer verse-bridge-chorus. Goes on for abit long though, but still....

His burnout came during the gap between Tao and Rock of life which was a 3 year silence which back then for an artist it was unheard to take time off, when he did Rock of Life he was set to tour then he had a freak accident on an ATV that broke ribs and had a metal plate in his shoulder he couldn't hold a guitar for a year but as he says the accident was a blessing because it forced him to look at himself and he went through tons of issues with depression and also he 2 kids and had to learn how to be a father and husband not a rock star. Since his return to recording in 1998 and touring to me there is no one doing more consistent work
