Lenny Kravitz
Greg Kadel

Start your week off right with new Lenny Kravitz.

Fans can now listen to "Sex," off his tenth studio album Strut (out Sept. 23), exclusively on Billboard.com.

"This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It was recorded with minimal instrumentation, guitar, bass and drums. The strength of the groove comes from the sparse production which creates space,” Kravitz tells Billboard.

BLANKET ON THE GROUND (3:28)

If 1 & 1 is 2

Am I the One for You

Do you know what I Mean?

If 6 & 3 are 9

Will you always be Mine

Even though I’m Green?

But since Spring is in the Air

Relax your Long Soft Hair

I’ll be true

Blanket on the Ground

Heaven’s all around

And I’m Still in Love with You

The Circus came to town

I played the role of Clown

It must be my nose

The laughter in your Smile

Stayed with me awhile

Or so the Story goes

But Every Circus Leaves

Sawdust Memories

They really do

Blanket on the Ground

Heaven’s all around

And I’m Still in Love with You

I Don’t Care What You Fear

I’ll Always Be Here

Near To You!

Even in the Acid Rain

I’ll be your Sugarcane

So Sweet to You

Sitting on the Beach

The Stars are out of reach

So I grab your Hand

Promising You All

Before the Rains fall

Throughout the Land

As you Accept this Ring

To be my Wife I sing

Just for two

Blanket on the Ground

Heaven’s all around

And I’m Still in Love with You

Blanket on the Ground

Heaven’s all around

And I’m Still in Love with You

Written, Arranged, Produced & Performed by SANANDA MAITREYA

Smokey Robinson New Album 'Smokey & Friends' Gets New Release Date, Mary J. Blige Collaboration 'Being With You' Arrives Online [LISTEN]

Smokey Robinson(Photo : Courtesy of 42 West)

Smokey Robinson has pushed up the release date of his major friend-filled collaborative album Smokey & Friends. Now due out Aug. 19, the legendary R&B singer has offered up the first taste of the record: his Mary J. Blige collaboration "Being With You."

Starting off with a big old signature R&B belt, Robinson and Blige seamlessly trade off vocal duties on "Being With You," taking individual verses and blending perfectly together at times as they sing about caring about nothing besides being together.

That's some true loving sentiments right there.

All set to smooth, carefree guitars and pianos, this is one easy, relaxing track that's as timeless as any of Robinson's music.

Listen to the Smokey Robinson song "Being With You," featuring Mary J. Blige below:

Blige, of course, isn't the only friend featured on Smokey & Friends. The record will also feature collaborations with major pop players new and old, including Elton John, John Legend, James Taylor, Miguel, Jessie J and more.

Movies Of The Mind is a live album from Michael Nesmith. The album documents Nesmith's 2013 2-month tour of the United States.

According to Nesmith, the songs played on the album touched a chronological and thematic history of Nesmith's solo music. He stated, "I picked my favorites to play, the ones I have come to love over the years, and the ones that are most requested by fans of my solo work."

INTERVIEW: Sara Jackson-Holman: “I'd like to be compared to myself!”

A classically trained pianist exploring pop music.
Her YouTube video views fluctuate around 5 and 6 digits. Her songs were featured in the TV series Grey's Anatomy, 90210 and Castle. The sound of piano and gentle vocals in the hands of a classically trained pianist is a lethal weapon. Sara is currently on a European tour (check the dates HERE).
What's the last record you listened to?
A collection of Satie piano pieces. I've been listening to almost exclusively classical music lately.
Your music was featured in a few TV shows. In your opinion, is that because it is so compelling for show producers, or do you have an amazing publisher?
I think it's a combination of a good licensing agent and the fact that many of my songs are moody and back up a dramatic scene well.
Adele and Amy Winehouse are just two of the names you were compared to in the past. Which names would you like to be compared to? What's your musical background?
I'd like to be compared to myself! If I had to, though, it would be Kanye!
As you're a classically trained musician, where's the connection between classical and modern pop music?
I feel both are mathematical, with precision and written-in dynamics. Many share structural themes as well.
If I understand correctly, you're the main author of your music, but there's a few producers involved with your latest album "Cardiology". What was their job, their input?
I had pretty fully developed ideas when I came into the studio for "Cardiology". I worked the songs out on my Mac in Garage Band with up to 45 tracks per song! My producers are great to bounce ideas off of and hone in on the electronic beats aspect of my music. They'll have arrangement ideas and also help mix when I lose perspective.
As "Cardiology" was released in 2012, I'm guessing there's loads of new material. Are you experimenting with any new styles/genres/themes?
I always hope to be expanding and finding new ways to keep performing and writing exciting, because I’m constantly thinking about it. In my new material – a European tour exclusive release, "River Queen" – I feel like I have taken themes and ideas I have touched lightly on in the past, and brought them to a new level in sounds, musicianship, and volume.
In your opinion, what separates you from other female singer-songwriters that play piano?
What separates me is subjective, I suppose. I feel like I relate to serious musicians in general more than I would identify myself as a female singer-songwriter. I’m female and I write songs, yes, but I am not comfortable just stopping there. I want to start at the piano, and continue to drums, synthesizers, percussion, vocal effect processors and so on. I have toyed with band names, but anyone I play with prefers Sara Jackson-Holman, so it will stick.
I'm amazed by the fact you're touring clubs. Is this your first European experience?
I came overseas here first in October and November of 2013. I had such a wonderful experience and being back this time I find myself even happier and more comfortable in clubs. Everyone has been dancing and singing along at the shows and it brings me great joy.

Interview: Sara Jackson-Holman (Bend, OR)

After being whisked up by the success of When You Dream, Sara Jackson-Holman has just released her sophomore album Cardiology to fantastic reviews. If you haven’t given it a listen yet, then you’re missing out! Fortunately, between playing a slew of shows in the northwest, and preparing to release a new music video for “Come By Fire”, she was able to answer a few questions.

As a child, what was it that initially drew you to piano?

We had my great-grandmother’s little spinet piano sitting in our living room, and I always loved to play it. I’d make up songs, I can remember being fascinated by it– and I remember how excited I was my first day of piano lessons. As I started in classical training, what I began to love, even at such a young age, was how I could express myself through the songs I was learning.

You were classically trained and obviously have a great love for classical music, where there any other musicians or musical styles that influenced you growing up?

Not a whole lot as I was growing up– When I was young, my mom listened to a lot of REM and Natalie Merchant. I still love both of them.

What made you decide to transition to pop?

I love pop music. As a listener, it’s my preferred genre, so I think that’s why I gravitated to writing pop songs. I like to see how I can draw upon my classical influences, and use them when I write.

What artists have you been listening to a lot recently?

M83, Poliça, Robyn, and always various pop and hip-hop.

Your songs tend to be very heavy and emotional, would you say that you are an emotional person outside of your music, or does it usually just come out when writing?

I would say I’m definitely an emotional person, but not necessarily outwardly. I’m generally really reserved and shy in expressing how I’m feeling to people, and I think in that way, songs are a good outlet for that.

Where do you find the most inspiration?

Outside, in nature. Being surrounded by beauty and without distractions clears my head when I need to be inspired.

A lot of times, inspiration is random, too: I’ll be inspired while driving, after watching a movie, walking down the street, and I’ll grab my phone and leave myself a message so I don’t forget what I’m thinking.

How often do you write music?

I go through phases. I will write several songs very quickly, then take a break. It’s not so much how it used to be for me, when I’d kind of wait for a song to come to me (though they do, sometimes). Many times it’s a conscious decision– “I want to write, I want to be creative, I’m going to write a song.” I think the practice of it is important, and I’m working at writing as much as I can.

Do you have a writing process for your lyrics?

It varies. Often, I’m writing a song with a particular idea, theme, or feeling in mind, and will start with the chords or a melody and go from there. Since pop music is so concise, I feel that it’s often a puzzle, fitting the lyrics with the song. It’s another thing I love about song-writing. Like in poetry, you are forced to evaluate the importance of every word you write, using only what is necessary to get to the real meaning of a song.

Your journey to success has been a whirlwind, has it been surreal? How has it changed your life the most? What has been your favorite part?

It’s changed my life in that it’s made it revolve around music. My favorite part? It’s pretty much all my favorite part. I love writing songs, I love recording them, and I love sharing those recordings with people. I love performing too. It’s funny, because over the last year, at each stage (writing, then recording, then getting back into performing) I’ve said, “This is my favorite part.” They are all important.

Do you have a personal favorite off of Cardiology?

My favorite will change from performance to performance. If I had to choose one that’s pretty consistently been my favorite, I’d say To Be Bright.

What are your hopes and plans for the future?

I’d love to be able to write music and perform full time.

Do you have any advice for aspiring singer-songwriters?

In my own experience, I think one of the most important things I have is a small group of people who I absolutely trust will give me their honest opinion. Those people are hard to come by, and are absolutely indispensable at any and every stage of the recording process. The other thing would be to write as much as you can, and then perform those songs as much as you can. Like I said, I think it’s all important and it all works together.

Missy Higgins reveals an album, a book and she’s pregnant with a baby boy

Make it possible

THE Special Two singer Missy Higgins and her playwright fiance Dan Lee will become a very special three in January.

Higgins will be taking time out from her career next year to nurture her next major production, a baby boy, who is due in January.

The creative duo met in Broome where Higgins has been a frequent visitor for several years, filming her acting debut in the 2009 musical Bran Nue Dae there and calling it her “home away from home”.

Lee is also a musician and invited Higgins to sing with his band Cable Bitches during one of their gigs last year.

They became engaged in December but have kept their plans to wed private since Lee announced they were getting married.

Higgins said they are “so excited” about becoming parents.

“I don’t think we’ve quite got our heads around how much our lives are about to change, but we’re so excited about it,” she said.

“Both being ‘creatives’, we’re mostly looking forward to getting out of our own heads and obsessing about something other than ourselves for once!

“And, of course, teaching him piano and guitar, I can’t wait for that.”

MORE: Missy Higgins kisse...bald Prize

Higgins was recently the subject of an intimate portrait for the Archibald Prize which featured her kissing the artist Sophie Hewson.

She has often discussed sexuality as “fluid” and previously had relationships with women.

Her first child isn’t her only revelation, with the 30-year-old musician and activist also making her debut as an author this year, proving a popular drawcard for this weekend’s Byron Bay Writer’s Festival.

She will release both OZ, the album and OZ, the book next month.

“I wanted to try something different this time around. I couldn’t decide between

making a covers album or writing a book so I decided to do both at once. Musically it’s intended to be a real mixed bag of lollies,” she said.

The album features Higgins reimagining 15 songs she loves by a wide range of Australian artists including Icehouse, The Angels, Paul Kelly, Dan Sultan, Slim Dusty and Divinyls.

She has also invited some of her mates to sing with her on the record including her Bran Nue Dae co-star Sultan, Kate Miller-Heidke and American artist Amanda Palmer.

The accompanying OZ book is a collection of essays inspired by the recordings which reflect on her own life, love and “how not to wear high heels”.

“Obviously part of the reason I called the whole project OZ is that it’s all about Australian songs,” she said.

“Plus, for the first time, I recorded the whole thing in Australia.

“However the title has a second meaning. I like the idea of songwriters being like the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz.

“Some people think we’re special people who have special powers but really we’re just scared little people hiding in a backroom somewhere, working like crazy to make sure we don’t get found out.”

Higgins has been one of Australia’s most successful and acclaimed artists in the past decade, with her first three records The Sound Of White, On A Clear Night and The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle all reaching No. 1 on the charts and going on to sell more than one million copies.

Both OZ the album and the book are released on September 19

The OZ tracklisting:

1. You Only Hide (Something For Kate)

2. Old Fitzroy (Dan Sultan)

3. NYE (Perry Keyes)

4. Shark Fin Blues (The Drones)

5. Was There Anything I Could Do (The Go-Betweens)

6. Back To The Wall (Divinyls)

Song Premiere: Young Summer, “Blood Love”

Written by Caine O'Rear August 5th, 2014 at 7:08 am

young summer 2

The Artist: Washington, D.C.-based electronic pop artist Young Summer

The Song: “Blood Love,” off her forthcoming debut LP Siren

http://www.amazon.com/Sir...ung+Summer

Songwriter Says: “‘Blood Love’ is about the intense, unbridled, head over heels, ‘nothing can break us,’ kind of love. The idea was inspired by, and is an allusion to, the term ‘Blood Lust.’ To experience ‘Blood Love’ is to experience a permanent kind of love, totally engrossing and not fleeting like lust. The song has different meanings depending on the day but at it’s core, this illustrates my relationship with music – for better or for worse, it’s me and the sound.”

The Sweet Inspirations: “The Complete Atlantic Singles Plus” (2014) CD Review

The Complete Atlantic Singles Plus

I love listening to the 1960s girl groups, and The Sweet Inspirations are particularly good, and have an interesting history. The Sweet Inspirations did session work, backing a lot of other artists, before they got the chance to record their own records. And during that early time, members included Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick. When Dionne left, her aunt, Emily “Cissy” Houston, replaced her. And when Dee Dee left to pursue her own career, she was replaced by Myrna Smith. And so the group, when they finally were able to record their own singles and albums, consisted of Cissy Houston, Myrna Smith, Estelle Brown and Sylvia Shemwell.

The Complete Atlantic Singles Plus features thirty-seven tracks on two CDs, and includes some previously unreleased material. Beautiful vocals dominate these tracks. The flip sides to most of the singles are as good as the A sides (in some cases, even better). Most of the songs here are covers, but there are also some original tunes, including “Where Did It Go” and “Get A Little Order.” It’s a great collection, and includes relatively extensive liner notes by David Nathan. In general, I prefer the tracks on the first CD; sometimes the second CD strays into some cheesy territory, like on “Light Sings.”
“Why (Am I Treated So Bad)”
“Why (Am I Treated So Bad),” the collection’s first track, opens with some absolutely beautiful blending of vocals over a cool, slow groove, and I’m mad for it immediately. And that low, sexy echo of “So bad” is perfect. This 1967 single reached #57 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #36 on the R&B chart. This is a delicious tune, written by Pops Staples.
That first single’s flip side, “I Don’t Want To Go On Without You,” is another slow gem, this one written by Jerry Wexler and Bert Berns (and recorded earlier by The Drifters). In addition to the wonderful vocals, there are nice instrumental sections featuring strings.
“When Something Is Wrong With My Baby”
The flip side to their second single was “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” a song that was a hit for Sam & Dave. The Sweet Inspirations’ version is full of heartfelt vocals, which rise beautifully above the sweet and simple music backing them. This song was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter.
I love what The Sweet Inspirations do with the Otis Redding song “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” This track features such a strong lead vocal performance, and gorgeous backing vocals.
The vocals are even more impressive and delightful on “Oh! What A Fool I’ve Been,” one of the many highlights of this collection. I particularly love the way they blend during the verses. This track was written by Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham and Darryl Carter. That single’s flip side is a fun version of Wilson Pickett’s “Don’t Fight It.”
“Sweet Inspiration”
“Sweet Inspiration” is a fun track featuring excellent vocals, and also a nice mid-tempo groove. “I’ve got to have your sweet inspiration/You know, there just ain’t no telling what a satisfied woman might do.” Written by Penn and Oldham, this single was a big hit for the group, reaching #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #5 on the R&B Chart. “And I’ve got the power every hour of the day.” Oh, I don’t doubt it.
Its flip side, a cover of “I’m Blue,” is an absolute delight, mostly because of the fun stuff they do in the backing vocals. I could listen to this song all day.
“Where Did It Go”
“Where Did It Go” is an original tune written by Cissy Houston, and released as the flip side to their cover of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” It’s an excellent tune, featuring a powerful lead vocal performance. Here is a taste of the lyrics: “We used to walk along, hand in hand/Thinking we were in a fairy land/And when you held me in your arms/Thrilled me with your charms/Tell me where did it go, where did it go, my love.” At the end, when she sings “I don’t know what I’ll do without you,” I believe her. And I can’t help but think the man would race back to her the moment he hears the song.
“Crying In The Rain”
The second disc opens with “Crying In The Rain,” their voices humming, sounding absolutely gorgeous. Then they blend on the song’s first lines, “I’m never gonna let you see/The way my broken heart is hurting me.” This is an absolutely wonderful rendition of the song written by Howard Greenfield and Carole King, and originally a hit for The Everly Brothers. In fact, I prefer this version by The Sweet Inspirations.
“Sweets For My Sweet”
The song title “Sweets For My Sweet” of course makes me think of Ophelia’s funeral (Gertrude says, “Sweets to the sweet” as she tosses the flowers). I prefer this group’s slower, more soulful material, for that is where they seem to most often shine. But they do a really good job with this more upbeat song, which was a hit for The Drifters in 1961. This was the title track for the group’s 1969 LP, as well as a single.
“Get A Little Order” is an original song, co-written by Cissy Houston and Sylvia Shemwell. This one has a bit more attitude. And, as expected, it features some excellent vocals. It was released as the flip side to “Sweets For My Sweet.”
Another fun track is “Them Boys,” which has a playful feel. It was written by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Roland Chambers.
Previously Unreleased Tracks
The second CD includes three previously unreleased tracks. The first is “I’ve Been Inspired to Love You,” in which they sing, “I’ve been inspired to love you, but I know I’ll lose this game.”
The second is an interesting choice of songs for a medley, beginning with an odd, cheesy, slow song, “Little Green Apples.” It then eases into “Something,” my personal favorite Beatles song. They do a gorgeous rendition of it. Their voices are beautiful, and their rendition doesn’t need the strings. The transition then to “Think” is odd, with them whispering “Think about it, think about it, think about it, think about it,” before jumping into a nice, high-energy version of the Aretha Franklin song. It’s very cool, but I wish they just dropped the first song, and recorded “Something” and “Think” as two separate tracks, because The Sweet Inspirations certainly have some interesting thoughts on both of those tunes.
The final track a pretty rendition of "Make It Easy On Yourself," a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Brian Setzer Discusses His New Album, 'Rockabilly Riot: All Original'

Brian Setzer will release a new studio album, Rockabilly Riot: All Original — a straight-ahead rockabilly album from start to finish — August 12 via Surfdog Records.

The album is the followup to 2011's Setzer Goes Instru-Mental!

The album, which features Mark Winchester (bass), Kevin McKendree (piano) and Noah Levy (drums), was recorded in Nashville and produced by Peter Collins.

“They seem to know what it should sound like," Setzer says about the crew that worked on the new album. "Peter Collins is experienced and an accomplished producer, he’s done a lot of records, but he loves rockabilly music and he knows what it should sound like.

“I think this album sounds to me a little bit like the first Stray Cats record…it's rockabilly songs. It’s not just blues songs in the rockabilly style. People like to call it ‘neo-billy,’ I suppose, which is some invented word somebody came up with, but if that’s the word they want to use, I’d like to go with that because it sounds to me like it’s very modern and fresh-sounding rockabilly.”

Here's a quick Q&A with Setzer:

Congratulations on the new album. There's something gloriously uncomplicated about rockabilly. It’s both badass and uplifting. How do you describe rockabilly?

Rockabilly music should be up there in regards with blues music. It should be playing in arenas. And, I think, it’s better than the blues because it has a style to it, it has accomplished musicians playing it and it’s totally American. So I think it’s very underrated music that should be more in the forefront of our culture.

Can you talk about the joy you had creating this specific rockabilly album?

You know, when my guitar and my amp and my echo unit are playing perfectly and in tune the way they do there’s no reason to turn it off. I was on the road for two months. I had given the songs I’d written to all the band members and we hadn’t arranged them. So this record was different where we didn’t have to sit down and labor over arrangements, everything was learned, and my guitar sound sounded so good I just made the record. We didn’t need to change guitars, amps, microphones—we just cut a rockabilly record—there’s no overdubs there’s no splicing there’s no auto tuning; what you hear is what you get. It’s pretty much us making live music.

Tell us about the chemistry in the studio between you, producer Peter Collins and the musicians who joined you on the album.

I think the only way you can make a better rockabilly record is if you get Elvis to sing…because Mark Winchester Kevin McKendree and Noah Levy are the best in their craft. Nobody plays a better slap bass than Mark. Kevin McKendree calls himself a “rockabilly piano player,” I’ve never heard anybody say that. And Noah just has a very swampy, groovy feel, which makes the whole thing sound kinda loose. Peter Collins…it’s funny how English people seem to have a more sensibility about what rockabilly music is, even though it was invented in the South…they seem to know what it should sound like. Peter Collins is experienced and an accomplished producer, he’s done a lot of records, but he loves rockabilly music and he knows what it should sound like.

What do you feel ultimately separates this album from your previous ones?

I’ve made a lot of records. I think this album is pretty similar to two albums I’ve cut in the past. It sounds to me a little be like Ignition: Part 2 and also like the first Stray Cats record. It’s rockabilly songs. It’s not just blues songs in the rockabilly style. People like to call it “neo-billy,” I suppose, which is some invented word that somebody came up with, but if that’s the word they want to use, I’d like to go with that because it sounds to me like it’s very modern and fresh-sounding rockabilly.

“Let’s Shake” is a burning up-tempo tune, a perfect setup for the rest of the album and a terrific single. Can you talk about this song’s mojo?

Yeah, “Let’s Shake” — how come no one has thought of that title yet? We’ve been making rock ‘n roll now for 60 years and no one has come up with “Let’s Shake”? And I came up with it and I went, “Wow…Let’s Shake!” You know, oh god, it’s just so simple it’s magic. It’s got a really great guitar solo in it, just rock ‘n roll sounding…it’s not really “billy” sounding it’s more rock and roll. And, you know, there’s a difference. The rockabilly has a more of a slap back hillbilly sound and the rock and roll is more tough. Oh god, it’s got that great, I think it’s from 1928 piano. It’s a Steinway. Again, it’s the simplest songs that are the hardest to write.

Another highlight of the album is “Vinyl Records.” Speaking of which, what are your three favorite vinyl records you own or once owned?

Gene Vincent, Blue Jean Bop; Eddie Cochran, Greatest Hits, and Elvis Presley, The Sun Sessions.

Rockabilly Riot: All Original Track Listing:

01. Let’s Shake
02. Rockabilly Blues
03. Vinyl Records
04. Lemme Slide

Billy Corgan’s experimental album AEGEA is now available

on May 15, 2014, 10:58am

In addition to two new Smashing Pumpkins albums, Billy Corgan has been hard at work on an experimental album called AEGEA. Recordings appearing on the double LP date back to 2007, but they’re only now available for purchase.

Beginning today, the first two pressings of AEGEA, limited to 250 copies each, are available through MadameZuZus.com. Each copy is hand collated, numbered, and signed by Corgan, with the first 50 records coming pressed on colored vinyl. That’s the album artwork up above.

“As a work, AEGEA is experimental in nature, and comes across as more a soundtrack to some lost foreign film than the kind of music I’m usually associated with,” Corgan said of the album. “Listening back I quite like how AEGEA goes along, as it has qualities that are both meditative and alien; but not alienating.”

Ones To Watch: Laura Welsh - "I have nothing to lose"

By Lewis Corner

Wednesday, Jun 11 2014, 7:56am EDT

Laura Welsh press shot 2014.

Despite currently adding the finishing touches to her debut album, Laura Welsh is no stranger when it comes to the music industry. Before locking herself away in the studio for a year, she could be found touring with her band as Laura and The Tears, or under the moniker Hey Laura.

"I was friends with all the guys in the band, and musically it was different," she tells us in a busy London coffee shop. "We did a lot of gigs and I really found my feet as a performer, but I just knew in my gut something wasn't quite right."

The dilemma came at a time when the group were naturally drifting apart, forcing Welsh to reconsider her identity as an artist.

"I remember thinking, 'Everything has completely fallen apart - where do I go from here?' But in a way it was a blessing in disguise because it meant I had to close the door and find out exactly what I wanted to do musically," she recalls. "That's where my best writing came from. I didn't have anything to lose. I had no expectations and nothing to prove, apart from make music that I love."

The move led her to London where she began work on a more stripped-down and emotive sound. "It's confessional, soulful pop," Laura notes. "The album has two sides to it. Some of the songs are more constrained, then some that are about to come out are a bit more visceral in sound."

All of Welsh's material comes from personal experience, the singer using writing sessions as a form of catharsis. "It's the one place I feel most free and exposed. There isn't any way to hide. Especially when writing this album - it's been a massive release for me. I couldn't have gone forward with it, without putting everything I wanted to into it."

It resulted in 2013's 'Cold Front' - a track dealing with the heartache and confusion that comes with a struggling relationship.

"A lot of it comes subconsciously," Welsh says of her subject matter. "It comes out and you think, 'S**t - where did that come from?' It's deep-rooted but comes to the surface in a song, and then kind of resolves it in a way."

Again on 'Unravel', Welsh can be heard offering her heart completely to a lover in a bid to save a romance, but while the lyrics are open, it's the subtle production that adds further weight to their admission.

Laura Welsh press shot 2014.

Welsh has worked with a host of talented producers, including Dev Hynes and Rhye's Robin Hannibal to name but a few. She spent 10 days in LA with the latter, working on a handful of songs.

"I love his vibe and his take on music," she says of the studio stint, adding, "there's no bulls**t there when you go in the studio. It's really relaxed." In fact, the pair hit it off so well they ended up working on a potential new track for John Legend during the sessions. "It's really important for me that you've clicked with them before, so it doesn't feel cold in the studio," she notes.

However, while Laura Welsh's soulful tones shine on her more understated approach, they also hold their own on Gorgon City's deep house-inflected 'Here For You'.

"It happened in December," she mused of the collaboration. "I went over to their studio just to write with them. We just did one song together. We vocalled the song on that day as we were writing it. I really didn't think any more of it, and then they came back and said they wanted it to be a single."

It's a big departure from her own sound, but one that Welsh is more than happy to embrace. "It's a completely different world to my music, but it's been good to do. I'm excited about it."

It's likely to become a mainstream catalyst for Laura Welsh when it undoubtedly climbs the chart later this month, with hopes the exposure will lead music fans to her own more ethereal brand of anthem - and with a completed debut album ready for release later this year, there couldn't be a better time to get on board.

'Here For You' by Gorgon City ft. Laura Welsh will be released in the UK on June 15.

Meiko Releases New Single, 'Be Mine,' Announces Dark, Confessional New Album, 'Dear You' [LISTEN]

Meiko(Photo : Courtesy of Fantasy Records)

Alt-pop singer-songwriter Meiko is set to release her third LP Dear You on October 14 via Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group. She has now shared the lead single for the track, "Be Mine."

The song is a confessional track that finds her pining after desired love.

"I take a sip of the bottle, it's my remedy," she sings. "And I know that it is a problem; I am dealing with it on the daily."

The new album follows up her 2012 release The Bright Side, which reached No. 1 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart with her single "Stuck On You." However, this time around the material has a darker tone that explores longing, betrayal, heartbreak and reprisal.

According to a press release, the 11-track effort consists primarily of unsent letters she wrote during trying times in her life.

"I like writing letters: love letters, pissed-off letters, breakup letters," she explains. "I rarely wind up mailing those letters, though. Instead, I turn them into songs. Dear You is an album mostly filled with those unsent notes."

The album features a mix of alt-pop, electronic, minimalist indie rock, and digital folk tracks, produced by Jimmy Messer.

Meiko professes, "It's not all candy and roses, but sometimes you just need the grit and that's exactly how I imagined Dear You being -- completely confessional. It was good for my soul and I'm happy to finally let it out into the world."

The album is available for pre-order on Amazon, and you can check out the track now on Paste.

Dear You Tracklist:
01. Bad Things
02. Lose It

07. Deep Sweat

Fergie Solo Album: 'Fergalicious' Singer Announces Sophomore Effort

Aug 15, 2014 02:58 PM EDT

Fergie(Photo : Kevin Tachman/Getty Images)

Eight years have passed since Fergie last blessed us with a solo album.

Her 2006 debut, The Dutchess, reached No. 2 on the Billboard chart and spawned the smash singles "London Bridge" and "Fergalicious," among others.

She's also been making her mark with the Black Eyed Peas for well over a decade, so it's not as if she's completely fallen off the map, but the thirst for more solo Fergie is real.

Thankfully, the wait is coming to an end.

Guesting on Chelsea Lately with Chelsea Handler on Thursday night, Fergie (birth name: Stacy Ann Ferguson) revealed that she's been in the studio prepping a new album that will not feature any of the Black Eyed Peas. That's right: Not even will.i.am shall make an appearance.

In fact, the studio is the only place where Ferg is currently able to escape her 11-month-old son Axl Duhamel.

"My social life is now at the studio," Fergie said. "Everyone's there. I just think it's the biggest party."

The 39-year-old spoke to Ryan Seacrest about a potential second solo effort this January, and said that she's been prepping ideas for the past several years.

"The Dutchess was comprised of songs from a seven-year period; a lot of people don't know that," she said. "I've been writing down my ideas, I've been in my little cave, my creative cave, and the ideas come when they come," she said. "So, when I do come out with my album, I'm going to be really proud of it."

As of now, there are no further details, but Fergie also confirmed that she will be touring after the release of her new material.

Her most recent stab at a solo effort was "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)" from The Great Gatsby soundtrack.

The album is her label debut and was recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Mitchell Froom (Paul McCartney) in his Los Angeles studio. Of the album, Edmonson states, "There's no particular theme, but there are some commonalities, one of which is my ever-underlying influence from motion pictures and film scores. I have always felt that music and film go hand in hand, because that was how I was first exposed to music—from old movies and musicals—and to me there wasn't a separation between an actor acting, dancing and singing." Presale tickets are available now while general ticketing is available is August 8 at katedmonson.com. See full tour dates below.

This album follows her 2012 release, "Way Down Low," her first collection that included original material. The New York Times hailed the album as "fresh as a spring bouquet," and The Boston Globe called it "one of the greatest vocal albums I've ever heard."

The record debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart and was featured on several major year-end "Best of 2012" lists including Downbeat Magazine, WNYC Soundcheck's

Edmonson performed on Austin City Limits made her Prairie Home Companion debut, and was featured on NPR an impressive five times that same year. The songstress also found herself touring with several well-established acts such as Chris Isaak, Gary Clark Jr. and Michael Kiwanuka.

Texas native Edmonson grew up in Houston and sang in the local club scene in Austin for several years before self-releasing Take To The Sky in 2009. A musical kinship developed from performing with fellow Texan Lyle Lovett led to a high-profile duet of the Christmas classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside," which the pair performed together on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Ariana Grande 'My Everything' Leak: New Album from 'Break Free' Singer Arrives Online Before August 25 Release Date

Ariana Grande's new album My Everything isn't supposed to be released until Monday, Aug. 25, following her live debut of "Break Free" at the 2014 MTV VMAs, but it seems as though the record has sprung a leak. Today (Aug. 21), Twitter reports and YouTube links seem to confirm that the follow-up to Grande's 2013 debut Yours Truly is available online.

A quick search for "Ariana Grande My Everything Leak" on the microblogging site brings up dozens of Arianators and casual pop music fans discussing the leaked album and posting links to illegal downloads.

My Everything opens up with "Intro," a chorus of layered Grande vocals before seguing into the mega Iggy Azalea featuring hit "Problem." Like on her debut album, Grande blends together the worlds of tween-friendly pop with sexy R&B.

Though her second single "Break Free" is perhaps the best example of this, album tracks such as "Why Try," "Break Your Heart Right Back" (feat. Childish Gambino) and "My Everything" also merge the worlds of adult and teen music.

So, if you search just a little bit, you can download My Everything now, four days before its official release. Or stream the album in full over at itemvn.com.

The leak of My Everything follows the official release of eight album songs, including singles "Problem," "Break Free" and "Bang Bang." Grande also has dropped "Best Mistake" (feat. Big Sean), "Love Me Harder" (feat. The Weeknd), "Be My Baby" (feat. Cashmere Cat), "A Little Bit Of Your Heart' and "Why Try." All but the first track were released yesterday (Aug. 20) in an album sampler stream on MTV.

Grande's My Everything officially drops on Aug. 25.

The Last Internationale takes folk roots seriously

Band’s debut album, We Will Reign, out Aug. 19

It’s a safe bet that Delila Paz and Edgey Pires of New York City agit-rock ensemble The Last Internationale probably don’t approve of lotteries, but that hasn’t stopped them from feeling rather like they’ve won one for the past year or so.

First, the pair got signed to Sony-affiliated major label Epic Records after wooing CEO L.A. Reid with their fierce cover of Woody Guthrie’s “Deportees.” Then, after a particularly bountiful Thanksgiving dinner at Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello’s place last November, The Last Internationale suddenly wound up with Rage drummer Brad Wilk as its own timekeeper. Then über-producer Brendan O’Brien, who’s worked with everyone from Rage and Pearl Jam to Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, signed on to oversee the recording of the band’s debut album, We Will Reign.

Now, with that record about to hit the shops on Tuesday, comes word that The Last Internationale will spend this November opening for Robert Plant on his entire U.K. tour. The good news just keeps coming and coming and coming.

“It’s pretty crazy,” confirms Paz from her pad in New York City. “We’re working with people I’d never think we’d work with, people who were my idols growing up. We just did a show with Neil Young in Liverpool. We opened up for him. I can’t even describe it.”

That a lot of people are very eager to get The Last Internationale in front of as many ears as possible comes as no surprise.

Paz and Pires five years ago might have considered themselves humble adherents of American folk and blues traditions, but their band has a big-room-ready hard-rock sound of the traditionalist bent that rock-radio stations endlessly thirst for, plus two things that contemporary hitmakers like Imagine Dragons and Foster the People are sadly lacking: personality and music that has something to say. At times, The Last Internationale could be mistaken for Rage Against the Machine fronted by Patti Smith.

Paz and Pires first bonded over their shared love of Guthrie, singer Odetta and the Folkways catalogue, and they take their responsibility to folk’s power-to-the-people lineage seriously even if their own band’s roiling, heavy-blues sound tends to depart from the genre’s typical beardy-guy-with-an-acoustic-guitar template.

“I think we do folk music,” says Paz. “We’re based in, I guess, the tradition of American folk music. And we still write songs that sound very folky, just acoustic guitar and voice. We still like songs like that. As a whole, anything we do is based on that.

“Ever since high school I’ve been involved with different political causes. I was always wanting to go f--- the system; that’s always how I’ve been since I was pretty young. But I’d never listened to Bob Dylan my whole life until I went to college and I felt like I’d discovered something that no one else had discovered. I was like, ‘How come I haven’t heard this music before?’ But I remember hearing Bob Dylan songs and then I wanted to hear Woody Guthrie after that, and I kept going back and back, and earlier and earlier, and discovering more music like that.”

All things considered, it makes complete sense that a band whose songbook so gallantly seeks to give voice to native rights, prisoners’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights in general should eventually find its way into the Rage Against the Machine circle. Arguably, there hasn’t been anyone doing a serious job of bringing this stuff to mainstream attention since they broke up (sort of) in 2000.

Nevertheless, Paz says she and Pires are still a little dumbfounded by just what a good fit Wilk has proven to be.

“We just started jamming and it just felt so natural,” she enthuses. “We went into the studio a week after that and recorded the album in two-and-a-half weeks. It was a very fast process. But we just started playing shows together and now we just came off a European tour and it’s really feeling like a band now. It’s really crazy. He’s one of our favourite drummers. We listened to Rage Against the Machine while we were growing up, so it’s an honour to play with him.”
