I don't think he sold 20 million copies off his album.

Well, Adele's debut album was kind of a slow burner, wasn't it? 'Chasing Pavements' and 'Cold Shoulder' were doing okay in the first half of '08, but it wasn't until the Bob Dylan cover toward the end of the year that she really took off. Prior to that, it was all about Duffy's Rockferry, and Winehouse was also still headlining festivals. Adele, at the time, was a bit of a second fiddler and a critics' favourite.

.

Then 'Make You Feel My Love' hit the charts and the rest is history.

This one with Nile Rodgers and Disclosure is really funky. Sounds quite Princey to me, I love it.

hardwork

Why the FUCK does ANYONE have to be the NEW "SOMEONE ELSE"??

What is up with this stupid, illogical bullshit?

Why the fuck cannot they just be WHO THE FUCK THEY ARE and then stand or fall on their OWN merits? They're good, they suck, they're meh, whatever, stop with all this shit about so-and-so is the "new" somebody else. The fact that some people cannot process an artist without some ridiculous and arbitrary reference to some OTHER - usually more well-known - artist is just totally fucking bizarre and really, really weird.

Adele, FWIW, is horrible beyond words to anyone who was alive when real music was king.

She has the emotional range of an undressed dinner salad.

Why would ANYONE wish to be called the new THAT?

How does someone with a name like Sam Smith become famous? Someone needs to give this poor fella a stage name before it's too late.

Nice, hadn't heard this one. I do like him best over electronic beats. The big ballad is kinda snoozy

I do prefer the original version with Disclosure to the acoustic version Smith included on his album. Both are great, but the Disclosure original's minor key adds a completely different vibe to the vocals. The acoustic version is happy and elated, the Disclosure version is open for more ambiguity in its interpretation (a touch of desperation, maybe even more sinister).

Haven't heard that acoustic version but I adore the Disclosure version. I agree that the minor chords in the Disclosure version give the song a very interesting vibe. Great song and great production!

I think this guy is more of the male Duffy, Duffy was big in both Europe/US back in 2008-2009... Rockferry won a Grammy, and her songs continued to deliver what Amy Winehouse songs used to deliver.... But she never sold big with the album, It was a big success for a short time.

Sam is good, I dig "Stay With Me" hella lot and I think its one of the best songs I listened to in a long time:

The mainstream soul music in the UK is more original/soulful than the mainstream soul in US.

And you had the nerve to say in a different thread that Pharrell was boring? Are you nuts?

Since R&B music in America now "sucks" let's bid adieu to some of the singers on this side of the pond, shall we?
