The Alice Cooper thread.

One of the best and most diverse catalogues of any artist imo.

Here's some of my favourite Cooper Classics:

I love Alice, especially his older work. My fav is From the Inside. I still love this album to this day. It makes me think and kind of gives me the creeps too.

I've listened to him a lot this spring. Just decided to go through all of the albums from the classic period.

I often like to play stuff by him to people that have no idea who the performer is, because they think he's all about hard rock, but that couldn't be further away from the truth.

Here's some seriously funky discoish stuff:

He can also sound a lot like John Lennon when he sings with his "normal" voice. lol

People think they know the Coop just because they've seen some of his videos from the "Trash" album era. The guy can do so much.

I picked up his "from the inside" and "dada" albums recently. Tried "inside" first and I love the title track. I only picked it up because I found it so odd to see David Foster produced it. Yep, the same guy that produced "Un-break my heart" did an album for Alice Cooper LOL (and thats not a knock on Toni Braxton, as thats a good song too). Shame Foster didn't stay as versitile as Alice did.

And I must admit, I do still love some of the "trash" album. "House of fire" is just so obnoxiously cheesy in a glorious 80's Bon Joviesque way, you just gotta love it! And the key change at the end is spot on!

How is "dada" anyone? I saw Bob Ezrin is on it and I know he is a producer I like so.........

Raise Your Fist & Yell is fast becoming one of my favourite Alice albums. I slept on this one for about a year, not being overly-impressed when I first bought it. But lately I haven't been able to stop playing it. So many great, anthemic, heavy tunes!

Freedom is a great track, one of my favourite opening cuts on any Alice album. What's your interpretation of the lyrical content? Seems like a pretty blatant political statement to me. Definitely one of the album highlights.

Prince Of Darkness is ridiculously hook-laden and I know Kane Roberts gets a lot of stick for his flashy guitar antics, but his lead work on this track is utterly brilliant.

The Gail trilogy is also brilliant and IMO better than anything from Trash and Hey Stoopid, culminating with the best track on the album Roses On White Lace.

Even some of the more throwaway tracks, such as Not That Kind Of Love and Time To Kill are of a much higher calibre than a lot of the albums cuts on Trash.

Yes and Marcella Detroit from the Shakespears sisters is his duet partner on "Millie and Billie".

After not listening to it for years and initially only having bought it to complete my collection, I have to say it's actually one of my favourites. It's a hidden gem from his dark, strange and odd period (the 4 albums between From the inside and Constrictor) and to me the real combeback album (it's the album right before Constrictor). It's rather diverse and not really typical Alice Cooper (well, maybe it is). It's dramatic, cheesy and funny and even patriotic, but great nonetheless. Amongst my favourite Alice Cooper albums along with From the inside, Welcome to my nightmare (also Bob Ezrin produced) and Billion Dollar Babies.

Also "House of fire" is amongst my favourite AC songs. It's a dream come true, that on his recent "Raise the dead" tour he's playing that song for the first time since the 80s.

His 70's work is classic! grew up with Alice. Not a HUGE fan like i was as a kid. But i love Killer, LOve It To Death, Welcome To My Nightmare, Schools Out, Billion Dollar Babies Alice Cooper Goes To Hell, and from the inside.

I have some love for his cheesier stuff. The first album i ever got was Trash when i was 7th grade (Ahh 2003 memories) and i was in a big hair metal phase at that time. I loved the hair metal vibe of the album. Also loved Constrictor! and really loved Hey Stupid. Those albums ae kind of silly listening now... i know Alice was a bit tongue n cheek. But, he still had those dark and sinister qualities. The late 80's and on were all tongue in cheek and nothing in between.

Well. Your rule sucks. Also your taste, if you cant find anything remotely impressing or enjoyable in his hits collection. wink

and, apparently, you can't read and/or you imagine things...

I said I OWN a hits collection of Alice Cooper, not that "I own a hits collection of Alice Cooper but I dislike the songs"; I said I'm not impressed, not that I can't enjoy some classic lil tunes luke Poison or Elected...

and my rule doesn't suck, it saves me time and money

That's not such a bad rule. But if the hits collection you are referring to has a track configuration like "Classicks" does then it certainly doesn't give a good impression of the body of his work. That one has his signature hair metal tracks and just some hits from the early days.

I'm not personally even such a big fan of the original Alice Cooper band, as the solo output between "Welcome To My Nightmare" and "Dada" is what I click with the best. If you're a Bowie fan then I could see that stuff being of some interest (I won't make the claim that they're as good as Bowie's in general, but not too far removed from his work either). Actually, many of those albums sound a lot like Lou Reed's more complex works (no wonder, as Bob Ezrin's produced them).

I suggest if you're interested you could give albums like "Welcome To My Nightmare" and "Alice Cooper Goes To Hell" a chance by listening to them on Youtube, iTunes whatever.

I personally really like some of the late-career releases like "Along Came A Spider" too (I'd say ACS is in my TOP5).

Well, it does suck and you might miss out based on a bad compilation. But since I don't know which one we're talking about it doesnt make much sense to argue further.

He's got some great stuff. I love No More Mr. Nice Guy, Elected ("I've got problems, you've got problems, everybody's got problems and frankly, I don't care!" LMAO at that every time!), Under My Wheels, School's Out ("We can't even think of a word that rhymes!" is another LMAO! Classic!).

I remember when I bought the "Billion Dollar Babies' album, I was so excited. Not because there was a $billion dollar bill in it, but there was a drawing of a girl and it showed her lady parts!
