Most Overrated Singers/Acts of All Time?

Some people can sing, others just have good marketing teams. So, you guys tell me who you think are the most overrated singers/acts of all time.

I'll start with Bob Dylan (disclaimer, that's not for his songwriting it's for his singing!)

True that Bob Dylan's voice sucks, but he influenced many artists to pursue their musical dream without having to sing beautifully, example: Tom Waits, Nick Cave...etc.

Well, a major overrated singer in the past 10 years is Britney fucking Spears. I can't even seem to understand how some people praise her little soft voice and even calling it an angels voice!! What the fuck? She can't even sing and she needs a goddamn vocal teacher EVERYTIME she records a song, that thing blew up just because of her looks (She isn't attractive -- IMO) and her Ops I did It Again song... her voice is just so bad.

That's funny. I think a lot of "singers" are relying on having their voice drowned out by gimmicky sound effects. I never understood why she was (and apparently still is) popular.

His songs are cheesy, his songwriting was about as good as AC/DC. His albums are full of filler, he owes a lot to his production team. I don't give a damn if he was a good dancer or not. Thriller is full of filler and cheesy ass songs. Off The Wall is the only album i really enjoy from him.

Plus, his hardcore fanbase is the absolute worse. I mean worse than Mariah Carey, Janet, Madonna, Whitney, Lady GaGa, Beyonce stans. And that's just disturbing confused

Most of his stuff is just cheesy, campy, and silly too me. But... that's just my opinion smile

Well, I disagree that his albums were mostly filler. If anything, that's what made him such a huge star is that there were a few albums that every song topped the charts for months at a time. Another thing to keep in mind is that all of his fame blossomed before Youtube, etc. So, actually getting to see a performer on TV or live was a treat. Now, we have 24/7 access and it's not as exciting anymore I think.

By the time he recorded Bad, he was in his late 20s and had already built Neverland around that time. So, I guess in some ways he was a perpetual child.

There are a lot of people who like Off The Wall more than other albums.

A lot of people have credited his success to production....Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton, etc. but I think Michael's finishing touches on his music is what made him unique to people.

So what's the deal with AC/DC? smile

I agree about the Beyonce fans....I find most of them to be like zombies. Tell them what's 'popular' and they agree until the end of time. She's VERY overrated. If hairtossing and tail shaking is equal to talent....

I think what made her popular is that hip-hop heads and mainstream folks alike really liked her. Somehow during the Miseducation album days, she was able to crossover without losing her hip-hop sound. I loved that album but her output since that time has been questionable. I don't think she should be considered a legend like some say she is. I think her relationship with that Marley dude really sunk her.

And Mary J. Blige. headache

** It has been no secret on the Org over the years that her voice is a sort of great distress for me.

She sounds like that old lady in church whom everyone is afraid to tell that she can't sing...
She sweats, waves her arms, jumps up and down, and people swore she SANG.
Nope. She sweated, jumped and down, and waved her arms. The tone was off, but the performance was good.
She was very lucky to find that market who could identify with her "life sucks because of every man" lyrics... But she CANNOT. SING. shake

I teach at the school from which she graduated, and her daughter attends now.
You cannot even THINK that you don't like her around there... confused
I just nod and smile and keep it moving. I have never been a fan.

I remember seeing something online that sad that Mary J. Blige gets away with singing off key because she connects to people really well and it somehow still fits in the song smile I think she found her target audience very quickly and hasn't deviated much from that....save the times she sang with Sting and a few others.

Oops, I just now saw your edited post and it made me laugh smile Yes, perhaps she's more of an entertainer than a great singer. I wonder if she's ever sung the National Anthem at all. That's always a good litmus test if a person can sing or not wink

The "Off The Wall" album was the perfect album. MJ was shocked that it wasn't "Thriller", so was I. lol Personally I thought Thriller had its moment but over all it was so so, and it hasn't held up. (IMHO) I thought his best work was done when the Jackson' 5 became "The Jacksons." Very talented man, I'd like to think if MJ personal issues could have stayed in check the solo music career would have been way more substantive tha it was

I agree with you about John Legend. I think there are a few songs of his that I like but I don't think he's spectactular. I'm also sick of seeing his wife on the news and at every red carpet event!

Okay, tell me why you don't like Anita Baker smile

Led Zep are overrated indeed, most of their material is stolen, and their fame is just because of their image "the perfect rock band" at the early 70s.... Jimmy Page is a great guitarist but sucks live...

The Beatles are not overrated in my opinion, all their albums, all what they did was something that contributed big time in music buisness.

Bob Marley is overrated, his music is good and all, but he's not the best reggae artist of all time, he was the reason reggae music is even famous, but that doesn't mean he's the best at it, and all the world doesnt see that.

I'm gonna say Aliyah as well. Her voice was thin but her production team was smart enough to drown her out with Timbaland's unique late 90s/early 00s sound.

The Beatles are just about unanimously regarded as the best musical act ever, and some of their fans are obnoxiously insistent that any other opinion is tantamout to heresy. There's not a single song that I come close to liking by them, despite having heard a good 50+. While I would never suggest that their music has no value, when they are time and time again touted as the greatest ever, I find it hard to think they could be anything BUT overrated. I'm not sure that any artist deserves that type of adulation.

I think Aaliyah knew how to use her voice very well. The thought of how Beyonce would treat a song like "I Care 4 U" makes me queasy.
