Someday we'll all be Free - Donny Hathaway

I listened to the TP song and the Babyface one, and the "sadness" is in the lyrics NOT in their delivery.

Actually I think the song I listed above lyrically is more positive than the song FEELS. It's all about the vocal delivery and the production. For example, there's NOTHING melancholy about the production on the Babyface track. SLOW does NOT equal somber.

DH's voice is still the MOST emotive in music. With Cee-Lo 2nd IMO. I'd list his intro Free off the Goodie M.O.B debut album too.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

My ex and I were in the midst of breaking up, at the time of this song's release. We had spent nearly 8 years together, and whenever I heard this song, I would cry like a baby. Add the video, and I was a mess. Still makes me weep, whenever I hear it....

"Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday is my pick.

It is sung so sadly, and is practically shocking in the direct delivery of what the subject matter is:

"Black body's swaying in the summer breeze, strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees."

It's such a depressing (and sadly true!) reflection on some of the darkest moments of American history.

Better than Stevie Wonder's original song. Awesome.

I also love Prince's "sometimes it snows in april".

I was in Catalina a couple weeks ago and absolutely struck down by hearing Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" coming out of one of the restaurants. I stood there and listened to the whole thing, and cried a little. I'm starting to well up just thinking about it. His sad songs are bloody sadistic. "It's Over" is even worse.

Totally agree....however, STAY by Sugarland is a real contender....and that video...such raw emotion.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

'Regret' by The Blue Nile. Even amongst sad Blue Nile songs (there are several), this just takes the biscuit. Utterly nihilistic.
