Why Are Y'all So Sensitive When...

Someone doesn't like an artist you like? i mean it's not that serious yo. I have seen death threats, racism accusations, spitting contest and dick waving contests. All because someone didn't agree with an artist you like!

When someone doesn't like a band or artist you like. Responding with ''you phaggot you piece of pee pee you don't understand them! go listen to justin clean your beaver cause you obviously only like top 40 music because you don't like Radiohead or Neurtal Milk Hotel phaggot''

I mean... if someone doesn't like an artist you like. You can either
A. accept it, move on with your life cause it's not serious, and be happy.
B. Show them some of your favorite songs from the artists and let them make there own opinion.

Just because someone doesn't like a certain artist you like. Doesn't mean there stupid, there mama sucks, there family ain't shit, they have no knowledge of music, there a phaggot, they have a small penis, there gay, they only like Shitney Spears, they murder puppies etc.

AND FOR YOU OLDER MEMBERS. Saying in every fucking thread ''young people just wouldn't get this cause they only like shit hop top 40''

NO that is a funk record. That's a bass solo, that's a bridge change, that production is multi layered. It can still be done today and wasn't as invative as you may think for the time. Yes that one record is inovative and i like it... or maybe i don't like it but who cares? and yes i like some modern stuff and old stuff. No, it doesn't mean i'm brainwashed by top 40.

No, i can like music from all different genres and years. If i wanna listen to Billie Holiday, Franz Liszt, Frank Zappa, Rob Zombie, Arcade Fire, Charles Mingus, Kanye West, Conway Twitty, Bootsy Collins, The National, Pet Shop Boys, Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Cannibal Corpse, Dead Or Alive, Kyu Sakamato, Outkast, Hall & Oates, The Clash, Aretha Franklin, R. Kelly, Led Zeppelin, Buck Owens, George Straight, Tom Petty, Nick Cave, Stevie Wonder, Drake, U2, Coldplay, and Bessie Smith all in one playlist.

I WILL! and if you don't like it. You can go back to your corner and eat those twinkies you don't need.

Let people like what they like and don't be a dickapus.

Peace, Love, water, Booty, Body Building, and don't eat sugar.

Probably because when they are so vocal about their dislikes their prejudices are showing. With someone like Prince I don't think I need to really explain it to the other fans on this site, because we've all been there.

Another thing that I don't like is the "anti-elitist" sentiment when I tell people that I like jazz and experimental music and people start behaving like they're above you just because they like "more normal music". That's some weird bullshit.

Forty two may not be old but it is too old to argue over what you listen to and what's popular now. The Biebs catches hell here from snobs but I assure you that no one here is willing to trade places even for the money, would you really like all of the scrutiny ? Here's the best solution for what ails us, if the coins being spent belong to you and you want to buy Haim, buy that shit homie! If the coins being spent belong to you and you want that first pressing of Charlie Parker's debut album that's only available in Sweden, get your passport together and fly over the pond and have at it.

I can really dig this post, and it's certainly difficult to even click on some of the topic postings, because it usually ends up being a horrific pissing contest regarding who sold how many copies, and who copied someone's style from some particular era.

It's also dissapointing as a gay black man, mid-40s and have been buying music since I was 5. I've been dj'ing on the local scene since the mid-80s, and while I still enjoy the occassional gig, the bars (including the gay) and clubs are going towards EDM, and you have a longshot of a gig unless you align yourself with a young promoter, and are okay with dj'ing alongside 3-4 other jocks on one night. Honestly, I believe I peaked creatively from 2003-2008. My style is impeccable. Rather than focusing on dance music, and the charts, I've always maintained the motto of "music you can dance to", and skillfully blended grooves from George Clinton, to Billy Squier, to Prince (of course), and Prince-related artists, to Yaz, to the new jam of the month. There's nothing like mixing a solid 12" remix from Shep Pettibone, or Arthur Baker from the late 80s with something from 2004, and watch people stop what they're doing and turn around to the jock. It's always been about the MUSIC, with me.

But I digress. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of everything, but I tend to focus on the good with music, and not the so-called bad. It's hard to read these posts with getting disapointed in knowing most likely these are adult human beings that like to make grammatical variations of artists and genres (Shitney, Gay-Z, Shit-Hop) , as if it's supposed to be something truly clever, and hurtful to those who fancy them. It's disturbing that human beings can be extremely obssessive of certain artists, when said artists will have nothing to do with them on the streets. I can't understand why there are actual arguements and debates and updates, and postings on new releases that allegedly flop; people cheer these incidents as if this is the NFL and the opposing team lost. Team Mariah, Team Janet, Madonna, etc, I like them all. Some songs are great, some arent, some albums I just completely disregard for the time being. Why are so-called music fans hate music as much they do here? What I mean is there's so much disdain for a lot of pop artists that seem to be on top of the charts, selling millions upon millions of albums, singles, and downloads, and yet because the Janets, and the Madonnas aren't doing as well right about now, there's a ton of resentment. Royals isn't a bad song. Katy has some catchy tunes, not everything she does is, though. I really dont know what the 20 somethings are sying about the music, because I don't hang out with that age group, but I aint gonna fault them, or look down on them because they like Miley. There's something really special about just liking music. that's it. First week sales, second week drops, why do we worry about this? I wish I could explain why I have such an infinite admiration for Swing Out Sister (25 years+), but I know most people consider them a one-hit wonder. Fine. But when I'm in a mid-sized music theatre, and Corrine Drewery hits the stage, and they break into "Surrender", I'm 18 again. This group will NEVER have another top 20 album, and I will most likely never hear one-note of their songs, even in a gay establishment. Fine. It's not a point of concern for me. There are no black stations here in Phoenix, and has been that way for some time. I have Sirius XM, and they have some good stations there. In the meantime, Im eagerly awaiting my Michael Henderson cd re-issues, and enjoy the barrage of great soul/funk re-releases I may have missed, and in some cases, never heard, or got around to listening to back in the day. I'm sure many of you have the same dealings with music, that is, if you are truly "tapped-in" to music, regardless of how old, or how little sold. I have no idea what Donald Fagen's "Sunken Condos" sold, but it hasn't left my changer since I put it in last year. Okay, so my changer broke, but that's not the point. The point is this...

Katie Kinisky: "So What Are The Latest Dances, Nell?"
Nell Carter: "Anything The Black Folks did Last Year"

Well the truth is a lot of the folks that accuse others of being music snobs do

the same shit. You really see a lot of that during these monotonous MJ, Janet,

Madonna, Mariah threads. I rarely get into the this song sucks or this era

sucks debates however I have no problem admitting my preference for 70's

through mid 80's music to latter day music. Does that make me a snob? Nope it's

just my preference. It doesn't mean I don't listen to any music from the 90's or later.

In fact today I listened to Zhane's Saturday Night album. I would take a guess that

a lot of 40 plus orgers just don't relate to a lot of today's music. That definitely

holds true when it comes to hip hop. I don't know what Waka Flaka Flame is. Definitely

can't relate to Drake, Lil Wayne but I can rock with Slum Village and The Roots.

Preference is more than likely the order vs snobbery.

Also...

D'aneglo is never going to release that album. No matter how many dozens of threads you make.

You don't have to think The Beatles are the greatest band of all time just cause people say so. Even though i still love em smile

Record sells don't mean shit and i mean don't mean shit. Fuck MJ and The Beatles record sells. You seeing that money? nope, then why give a fuck? calm those tits. And those awards? are they for you? then why brag if your favorite has awards? don't mean shit lol

You know, I turned in my music snob card a long time ago. I used to be one of those people who would get all bent out of shape when someone had an opinion about an artist that I liked. I remember doing radio back in 1995 and one day, a listener told me she didn't like the music I played. I cursed her out and tried my best to destroy her dignity and my friend pulled me to the side and chewed me out! I still didn't get it then. Several years ago, someone told me they didn't like Prince and I went off again, but minus the cursing. I knew that I had to chill on that, espcially if I wanted to be in the public eye with my radio work/podcasting. People are entitled to their opinions and I had to learn to be okay with that. Nowadays, if you say to me you don't like Living Colour or you think D'Angelo is better than Omar, I can live with that and move on. I don't get all bent out of shape like I used to. As Melle Mel told me once: "It is what it is!"

Yo?! ::: sideeye :::

Anyway, it's just human nature. The same way sports fans get pissed when fans of rival teams badmouth their favorites. A persons favorite artist/team/actor/celebrity touches them on a personal level, so much that they almost become like their wards. So when someone else comes along and badmouths or dismisses them, it's like they're badmouthing you (or someone you care about in real life) on some level, and you feel naturally inclined to fight for their honor.

Music snobbery is so, like, two decades ago.

It used to be, if someone had heard of something like James Blood Ulmer or Massacre, and could talk with knowledge about them, that was a rare find! Hardly anyone bought those records or even the magazines that talked about those artists. You DID have to be kinda clued-in to find that stuff.

Now almost everything is clickable, equally accessible, equally valuable. There's no merit for the listener in having found or appreciated it. It's all good, bro. We both have an internet connection and Spotify and thus, access to the same giant record collection. How can you be a snob about liking selection A better than selection B?

Incidentally as a fan or Black Flag and the Circle Jerks in suburban NJ circa '86, I learned pretty fast not to give a shit if other people don't like what I like. The default position is "no, they don't."

I hope I never gave anyone a hard time about it, like, "I'm better than you because I like this and it's good and you are too stupid to get it." If I ever did, hey, sorry about that.
