compared to Prince? Hell no! compared to Justin Bieber? well, i guess so.

Compared to Prince? WTF? Who compared who in the thread!! Y'all just wanna make these low ass comparaisons that end up with no point made. What if I told you that Prince is shit when it comes to Ravi Shankar or fucking Mozart... Prince is not the best musician in the world, and John Legend is a decent singer and he is very respected in the R&B field.

Are his albusm worth checking out? the guy is talented and all. But just seems like a male Alicia Keys.

I agree. He's not Donny or Peabo or anyone great, but he's talented and yeah...just "there." I'd much rather listen 2 Peabo all day. smile

Donny Osmond or Hathaway? Peabo Bryson? you're kidding right?

John is a Legend. Of course his music is cool. Snappy dresser too. typing

On a slightly similar note to Billmenever, I wonder who you, Kitbradley, were talking about when you said 'Jeffrey'? I know Peabo Bryson, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, but I can't seem to put a surname, face, and music to 'Jeffrey'.

Or maybe that's the whippersnapper in me talking. razz

Awww, you seem to need a hug. My point was it's all relative. Legend is bland imo. He may be respected, but he ain't no pretty man! Prince has always been FIRE and, IMO, much better than Mozart and the other guy you mentioned (who I don't even have the urge to check out at this time).

Mozart was hot, but he ain't SEXY! Dig?

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Besides 'Ordinary People' and 'All of Me', his sht is trash.

If you wanna hear someone that is actually good, check out Anthony Hamilton.

Revolution compared Legend to Prince and Bieber; you compared Prince to Shankar and Mozart.

I'd tell you that Ravi Shankar and Mozart would both be terrible busting out any classic Prince from the early 80s. And I'd probably not prefer their versions of "All of Me" to Mr. Legend's. It is completely meaningless to bring them up.

Comparing Legend to Prince does make some sense, however. Legend and Prince can meet on the field of R&B battle, though they're not much alike. And at least one orger has said (I think in the Breakdown thread) that Legend is doing what they want Prince to be doing now. Revolution thinks Prince would win...so do I (in fact, I'll put their current singles up against each other--yep, Prince by quite a bit).

Now, does the comparison mean much? Well, if you tell me someone is like Legend and someone else is like Prince--I'll check out the someone who's "like Prince" first. That's about all it means. But I'd also probably check out the person who's "like Bieber" before I'd listen to the Legend-a-like... because the original bores me to tears.

I see what youre saying but its still not much of a comparison because Legend doesn't even write his own music. 90% of his albums are written by other people... and they're still boring as hell.

Change it one more time..

I almost feel bad not digging his music. All Of Me is better to hear than the millonth ass, booty, club song. But it's a standard 4 chord song... and it's just Just The way You Are part 3. Cause Bruno Mars was Billy Joels song rewritten, and this song is like Brunos song rewritten.

He loves her for her, her curves and shit blah blah blah. Just so zzz

I know! ohgoon

People give you the side-eye when you say you don't like him.

  • A coworker at BN got indignant that night I said that I wished they would change the CD...
  • I was at a party not too long ago, and the couple at our table went into attack mode when I said that I didn't like his voice. neutral

Personal preference, ya know?

I guess his Get Lifted album is regarded as a contemporary R&B classic somehow, that song Ordinary People is his signature and appeared probably on every Top Songs of The Decade list.

You know what, though? I respect that he's still true to his music, he never went EDM or something like that to have success, look at Ne Yo, he had a very successfull career as an R&B singer but then with all that Pitbull & David Guetta stuff he just sold out.

Also did a remixed version of Until You Come Back To Me called 'Do What I Gotta Do' with Kanye I really like.

Yep, its definitely one of his best songs IMO. I think John Legend's OK, he has a few good songs but he's more of an R&B-Pop type artist for the mainstream. IMO his singing is abit hit & miss and I'd much rather listen to Anthony Hamilton, Frank McComb and other singers of that generation if I wanted to listen to a modern R&B artist.

He doesn't have the fire in his belly. Every great artist has some anger in them and art is used as vessel to express it. I've seen him on Bill Maher's show a few times and he seems more passionate about social and political issues. Maybe that is where his heart is and music is just a job.

Now Alicia Keys is the one I can't figure out. She is a snore fest.

John Legend has virtually no mainstream competition in R&B right now. He's basically lucky. I like some of his music though.

He has the skills and chops to be legendary, but seriously lacks the heart and passion in his music. He plays it too safe much like Alicia Keys to be honest.
