YOUR FAVORITE SONGWRITER?

BOB DYLAN for me !

Once upon a time you dressed so fine

you threw the bums a dime in your prime

didn't you

this line got everybody from John Lennon to Johnny Cash and James Brown thinking "Shit I gotta get back in the studio..."

It really depends on what music we are talking about. Lionel Richie, Richard Marx,Barry Manilow. can write a great melody and ballad with ease and get it across. If we are talking more diversity type writing, Ryan Adams, Norah Jones, Magne Furuholmen (of a-ha). But for all time i got to say between Bernie Taupin (lyrics) Elton John (music) and also Paul McCartney, Lennon, also Julian Lennon is amazing so underrated, and one of the best POP writers ever, Barry Gibb.

"We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I had a Dylan book of lyrics and boy he could throw down. Just beautiful lyrics. Jim Morrison is another great writer. Too many to mention though...

I could never definitively answer this question, but if we're talking lyrics, Joni Mitchell may very well edge out most, if not all, of my other favorites.

I'm entirely unable to answer, though, if we're talking compositions in a broader sense.

U just got me to change my siggy back to what it had been.

Lennon has written my favorite song ever....but I think imma have to be trite and say Prince.

His ability to write well in a myriad of styles, fiction and non fiction astounds me. But don't get me wrong, his number of shitty songs also astounds me. He's not the best ever, but his song writing in conjunction with all his other talents is truly unique. In terms of talent, a national treasure.

If we're choosing one favorite songwriter, I would have to say Bob Dylan. IMO - he's the greatest songwriter of our time.

Paul Simon is also excellent as was Sam Cooke.
