That's The Way Love Goes vs. Got Till It's Gone

Which one was the better lead off single from janet and velvet rope? Please don't use chart success to back it up, focus on the music. Which one was more creative, memorable, timeless, classic etc. I recall a piano ballad remix on the Got Till It's Gone single that I sometimes put above the original, I had no idea till recently J Dilla produced it.

Although I love the creativity in Got Till It's Gone and the artistic video, I'm going with That's the Way Love Goes. I love it's groovy, beautiful, sensual, melodic and harmonic vibe and it's like honey butter. I can play it on repeat, whether with the original or all the supporting remixes. It was nice hearing the remix on urban radio years after the release

I think I'm gonna go with 'Got Till It's Gone'. Maybe it loses originality points for the 'Big Yellow Taxi' sample, and yet I LOVE what they did with that. This song also introduced me to Q-Tip (the radio stations we listened to at home didn't play a lot of ATCQ).

I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

I always found That's The Way Love Goes a bit overrated, whereas I love Got 'Til It's Gone!

This one is a little easier for me to answer. "TTWLG". The JB sample was used perfectly. The mid-tempo groove was a welcomed surprise. The low-end bass use in the drum programming was dope. Especially in my friend's Nissan Maxima at the time. Those 12" sub woofers used to really bang to this! lol I loved the refrain, "Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire. My love is blind can't you see my desire?" The way they captured the general public's anticipation with the video introduction was on point too. "Pump her Boo, pump her!" She and her team were working like a well oiled machine with this one.

Oh.....and not to mention the fact I can understand every lyric.

Which brings me to "GTIG". I always considered the release of "GTIG" was the first real miscue from her and her team. I thought it was a mistake to release it first. Hell, even as a single period. I loved the music, the groove/vibe of it all but I never could get over how I could never understand what she was saying in parts of the verses. lol Aside from that it's a good song, but not single worthy. Good album track though. Which is why sales for "TVR" only really picked up after they released, "Together Again." The video was hot too. The message was profound without being overtly political. Oh and here's a question for the ladies: What did they use to make her skin look like that? It looked very natural and shiny at the same time. lol

Here's some love for "GTIG" anyway though...

When I first heard GTIG, I was completely befuddled. It didn't sound "hitworthy" enough 4 me and I think it slowed down TVR's initial sales. She's issued some real duds as introductory singles over her career. As for TTWLG, it's nice, it's jazzy and breezy, but again, no big deal as a first single. smile

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

I'm not going to lie, I first heard got till it's gone on urban radio the day princess diana passed thinking newe janet will cheer me up, and upon first listen, I liked the beat but couldn't tell if it was really her or not cause she was too soft and the song was all over the place, but once the video came and the more I heard it, I liked it though of course I liked most of the album so much more. I don't know what else would have made a good first single, I'm thinking maybe You or My Need though radio may have not appreciated it enough.

That's The Way Love Goes is so pretty though and great mood music
