Why Are Depeche Mode Seen As King Of Electronic music?

When Prince and Parliament came first? didn't they pioner the electro sound? before those tiny brits came in and made it their own. Seems unfair to view them as the kings of electronic. Even Jim Croche and Earth,Wind, and fire had it.

No, there was Delia Derbyshire, Raymond Scott, Sun Ra, White Noise, Wendy Carlos, Kraftwerk, Alice Shields, Daphne Oram, Tangerine Dream and others.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'm not white and I used to LOVE Depeche Mode. And what does Andy Bell's sexuality have to do with this thread? Oh, but I guess he's white AND gay so I guess he's doubly irrelevant to "electronic music".. I think I'm getting it now.

Change it one more time..

I saw depeche last year in LA at The Staples center. Literally the most packed concert i've ever been too.

I've seen Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Prince, Kendrick Lamar, R. Kelly, Metallica etc. Really big artist with a huge crowd. Depche Mode was the biggest confused they played 2 days at Staples Center. Every seat was taken. And people of all races were there... literally. It was kind of amazing to see the impact they've had.

I don't know what's electronic about Jim Croce's music, but he's Italian, so how does he fit into your ideas? lol

Depeche Mode are fucking fantastic but I've never heard anyone describe them as the kings of electronic music.

That title belongs to Kraftwerk. They literally built their own equipment in order to move electronic music forward.

I agree. Kraftwerk is a purely electronic act. Depeche Mode has an electronic element but they also mixed it with rock and conventional instruments. Depeche Mode is innovative for mixing the two kinds of music together rather than being kings or pioneers of purely electronic or dance music.

Depeche Mode means a lot to me. woot!

I have been there since the very first album in was it '81 (the 1 by Vince Clarke),

The only really "bad album" is actually the Vince penned synth pop debut, + whats released post Ultra (since 1997),

I like half of the Playing the Angel though.

Watch the great 1993 or so-concert "Devotional" released on dvd, this is brilliant.

My top picks for kings of electronic music would be Kraftwerk, YMO, & Georgio Moroder. wink I'll even add Vince Clarke, Martin Ware, "Pretty" Tony Butler, Herbie Hancock, and Steve Wonder to the list.

I get what you mean, I saw them in Vienna a few weks ago and it was also packed and the crowd went apeshit crazy eek

personally I wouldn't say it was bigger than the Prince gig at the very same venue two years before that, but hey, I'm not objective. while I'm a Prince fanatic I'm not so much into Depeche Mode. I was at the concert mainly because of my wife (a diehard DM fan since childhood), but I admit I did enjoy the show way more than I expected

Unofrtunately DG was always best when he was off his tits. Shame really. Went to see them again a few years later and it was all a bit flat in comparison.

Prince and Parliament-Funkadelic came first, but I've never thought of them as "electronic music". Even though they use electronic instruments, they also use guitars, electric bass, live drums, and P-Funk and EWF used a lot of horns, too.

Depeche Mode (and Kraftwerk) used ONLY electronic instruments (synths and drum machines) on their earlier albums, but now DM has added some guitar and live drums to their shows.

I only know of Delia via the original Doctor Who theme from the early 60's. Even if that was the only thing she ever did, that in itself is some achievement. What a great piece of music that is. music
