The White House “I’m Every Woman: The History of Women in Soul” Concert

***Ummm, Dear White House Entertainment whoever, if you're gonna give Chaka a shout out and mention it in a few press releases don't you think you should have asked her to take part?

Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Janelle Monae Set for White House ‘Women of Soul’ Concert

*On Thursday (March 6) President and Mrs. Obama will host “Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House,” featuring Aretha Franklin, Ariana Grande, Patti LaBelle, Janelle Monáe, Jill Scott, Tessanne Chin and Melissa Etheridge with Greg Phillinganes as music director.

*********************************************************

The concert aims to celebrate the great “foremothers” of American music, with songs expressing the struggles and achievements of women. It’ll take place in the East Room of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and premiere Monday, April 7 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide. (Check local listings.)

*********************************************************

On the morning of the concert taping, the White House will host “I’m Every Woman: The History of Women in Soul,” an educational workshop for 124 middle school, high school and college-level students from across the country, held in the State Dining Room.

*********************************************************

The event will be produced by The Grammy Museum and led by its executive director Robert Santelli, a leading musicologist and music educator who will give the students an overview of the impact of women’s music on the country, discuss important artists from throughout its history, and explore the struggles and the achievements of women in American music.

*********************************************************

Santelli will be joined by LaBelle, Etheridge and Monáe, who will share their experiences as well as answer students’ questions. The White House “I’m Every Woman: The History of Women in Soul” workshop will be streamed live on www.whitehouse.gov/live.

Oh SNAP! I HAVE to see this eek

But then again, PBS has been getting stricter with viewer restrictions when it comes to streaming content internationally (particularly anything with musical content) mad

I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers that I'll just magically locate it somewhere on the web typing smile

I saw the performance online and all the Ladies did a Great job..Aretha had The President & First Lady burning up in their own house..LOL...They joked about the East Room being HOT...The Background singers used their hands to Fan themselves. Poor Jill Scot looked soaked...The White House had an outstanding Band but The Queen brought her road-crew. Like Always the Finale became the "Aretha Show"....Very emotional Testimony from her..

I get why it's RARE to see Legends share the same stage or anything. The Royal treatment effect...

Me too. They could have retitled it though, since Whitney is gone, and Chaka won't be there.

Oh! Upon further perusal, I see the concert is called "Women In Soul". The workshop is called "I'm Every Woman". Glad I got that straightened out because I was about to send a nasty gram to the White House. lol

*Based on what I saw Aretha made her entrance from the back of the House, Patti reached out and touched her arm and Aretha simply gave her a Nod. Aretha was walking fast to get to the stage..End of story...*

Dueling Side Eye Divas: Aretha Franklin Disses Patti LaBelle

Mar 11, 2014

By Jonathan Hailey, Assistant Editor

***************************************************************************************************************

When it comes to legendary women of soul, the first two names that come to mind are Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin. The two ladies have both helped kick open the door for black artists to flourish. However, somewhere with both women striving for success, there was some type of bad blood. How do we know? Well, at a recent concert, Aretha Franklin hit Patti LaBelle with so much shade, Patti thought hell might have actually frozen over.

The two legends were present at the White House’s “Women of Soul” concert over the weekend. Franklin entered the room to a standing ovation. On her way to her seat, Franklin passed LaBelle. LaBelle reached out her hand to the Queen of Soul and that hand was left high and dry. Aretha Franklin looked at Patti’s hand like, “Chile, you know I don’t mess with you. Don’t try to get cute in front of these cameras.” As Franklin hit LaBelle with the side eye, she brushed past LaBelle and headed to her seat while still enjoying the adulation from the audience.

Since both of the women are almost as known for their shading moments as their voices, we wanted to ask you, who is the queen of shade throwing?

The article is so incorrect. Miss Franklin was not heading to her seat, she never sat in the audience as the others performers, instead she was headed to the stage as Miss Holt (LaBelle) appeared to reach out to her, but was rebuffed. It was a strange moment. Also Jill Scott referred to Patti LaBelle as The Godmother of Soul, and Aretha Franklin as The Queen of Soul.

All of the other performers tributed Tina Turner in a finale of sorts on "Proud Mary", notably absent was Aretha, who closed the event with "Amazing Grace" and she turned the White House into a Baptist church revival. JIll Scott earlier did "Rock Steady".

The relationship between Aretha and Patti has always had its moments. There was the famous green room incident backstage at the Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago. The two appeared ten years later on a Xmas Show in Detroit together for Tom Joyner's Mistletoe Jam in 2005 and even sang together. The issue now may be LaBelle saying in an interview that she had lit candles and prayed for Franklin because she has pancreatic cancer.

All indications are that Franklin had some sort of tumor that was removed, but pancreatic cancer it wasn't.

Divas, oh boy!

^^^^ Aren't those two over 70? Too old for that mess. Both of them. Why was Patti in the audience? I thought performers had to be somewhere else? And no Chaka but you title it "I'm Every Woman"? Bullshit.

You MUST check them out on Youtube, right NAOW [/Ahnold voice] before they take them down for some stupid reason.

The ladies are all putting their best leg forward, and the crown performance is arguably their joint rendition of 'Proud Mary'. I'd embed a video, but I can't decide between all the awesomeness. Tessanne Chin absolutely killed it when she sang Donna Summer's 'Last Dance'.

I watched it online last week and the cameras showed a different angle. The online Viewers saw Patti touching Aretha...I don't want to think that Aretha Franklin refused to touch Patti and intentionally backed-away. I don't think she's that hateful. There's a possibility That Patti's held on to Aretha's left hand and let go as Aretha moved forward...Patti holding onto Aretha's left hand is what the camera did not show...When Aretha was done performing Patti was the first one she embraced before leaving the room....People are assuming there was no Physicial contact and I believe there was..

I haven't been up here in awhile, but I had to comment on this!!! I watched this performance earlier this week and I have been still trying to see what the fuss is all about!! it may look that way, but its not at all..but no one is talking about how when Aretha finished her set, the first person she hugged before leaving out was Patti, they both hugged each other..during Aretha's performances, Patti was all in it.trust if something has went down, it would have been all on Labelles face, we all know that!!!let me just say they have the most admiration for one another..;don't know where people are getting that they have a rivalry but they don't: Aretha has asked Patti to perform If Only You Knew when she decides to get married again at her wedding, Patti calls Aretha her "hero" and just loves all of her songs, especially Ain't No Way, Aretha wanted Patti to be with her if she ever became a judge on American Idol..so what's the fuss? people always talking bout Ree, but Patti has always thrown shade over Diana Ross for years, but no one brings that up!!! and I love all the ladies of soul: Aretha, Patti, Dionne, Gladys, Mavis, Chaka, Diana, and etc...

Like Always Miss Patti is a Class act..........

No truth to the LaBelle-Franklin rumors, Patti says

Posted: Friday, April 4, 2014, 3:01 AM

THERE WAS a touch of controversy surrounding last month's "Women of Soul" events at the White House. The Internet was abuzz with rumors of a rift between Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin, after video clips surfaced of Franklin's entrance to the evening concert that made it appear she sidestepped and shunned LaBelle, who extended her hand as the original Ri-Ri made her way to the stage.

Is there a beef in diva land?

Earlier this week, LaBelle firmly dismissed any notion that the Queen of Soul was throwing shade.

"A lot of times, when people are singing, they don't see anybody," LaBelle explained. "I didn't feel any negativity at all. She is the most wonderful woman in the world, and there is no one like her, and I pray for her every day."

She added that those planning to watch Monday's concert special should "get your Kleenex ready, because Aretha sings 'Amazing Grace' and she wears it out!"

Glad to not see Beyonce's pseudo-feminist self on this list. At the same time, kinda surprising to see Ariana Grande's but I guess she fulfills the role of future star though I have to question MC's availability...

Janelle's name is always delightful to see so naturally I'm happy about her. <img src=" src="http://prince.org/i/s/icon_biggrin.gif" />

While I'm not very knowledgeable on producers, I can still say I think Greg Phillinganes is one of the GOATs in that regard.

Who are Jill Scott, Tessanne Chin, and Melissa Etheridge?

eek Yikes! You are rather new to music if you don't know who Jill Scott is. And Melissa has been around since the 80's, I believe. Although I ain't quite sure why she was included in this line-up. confuse

I am (sorta).Didn't really begin to get into music in a more hardcore way till just early last year. As for Ms. Scott, I've heard her name before but can't guarantee that I've listened to any of her music, or at the very least remember any of her songs.

I have always Loved Melissa and you hear Soul in her voice whenever she sings. She gladly considers herself a Rock Queen but she acknowledges her roots &/or Love for Soul music...I also hear Soul in Wynonna Judd. The Director of the event did the wise thing to showcase how Soul is a part of the Family Tree of Music...

Thanks Queen for clearing up a question that some havewondered for a long time. I've tried to tell Patti fans, Haters and others that as Funny-acting as you are you would never mention Patti's name at any time if you weren't Cool with her. Most folks know that's how you roll. People needed to hear it from your lips...

An Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle fistfight?

Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY 11:23 a.m. EDT April 15, 2014

Did you hear the story about Patti LaBelle being arrested and charged with assault for trying to deck Aretha Franklin?

Talk about dueling divas!

The News Nerd gave a detailed account of the two meeting in Atlanta at a concert, where LaBelle gave Franklin "a Mayweather style right and left" that caused the singer to stumble and fall, "landing awkwardly." The site goes on to say LaBelle was arrested and has a court date this week. It all stemmed from some supposed shade Franklin threw LaBelle's way last month at a White House concert.

But the News Nerd is a "purely satirical" site, as it notes way down at the bottom of its front page, and none of this is true.

Nevertheless, the tale traveled 'round the Web to the point that Franklin issued a statement this morning.

"I've never heard anything crazier — regarding myself and Patti allegedly fighting on March 20, in Atlanta," she says.

"On March 20, I was in New York City readying for my birthday patty (Sorry. LOL. Laughing at my typo error). I meant PARTY, which we all had one fabulous time."

The Queen of Soul, 72, adds, "Patti and I are cool and we always have been. I enjoyed her at the White House. Classic Patti."

Pick up Melissa Etheridge's cd called "Yes, I am". It's several years old, but it's an awesome piece of work. She writes most of her own songs and has a great rock voice.
