Bruno has been going non-stop since 2012 creating and promoting Unorthodox Jukebox...then in June 2013 he kicked off his MJ Tour and hasnt stopped since! The father of Bruno Mars – who returns home for three shows this week – talks about the star’s musical origins and the family that loves him

Peter Hernandez Jr. was born into a world of doo-wop, literally.

His father, Peter Hernandez Sr., had convinced the delivering doctor to allow the lights in the room to be dimmed low like a nightclub, while his choice doo-wop songs played on a tape recorder.

From that moment followed years of musical cultivation that led to the eventual success Peter Hernandez Jr. has found as Bruno Mars – a two-time Grammy Award-winning musician with fans throughout the world.

Though his fame has skyrocketed in recent years, at the root of his path to everything he has accomplished is a family’s love story.

Before Bruno

Born and raised in New York, Peter Hernandez Sr. grew up surrounded by musical influences, much like his son.

As a child, Hernandez would accompany his dad to gigs. There, he would hide under tables, watching the Latin orchestra his father had formed perform with musicians such as Tito Puente.

It also was in New York that Hernandez’s love and passion for doo-wop formed and grew. His fascination with the genre created “Dr. Doo-Wop,” a moniker that has been attached to him since age 13.

Growing up musically involved in Brooklyn, he says, was like living in a movie.

“I lived West Side Story,” he says, “without the dancing.”

At the age of 25, inspired by Elvis Presley’s love for Hawaii, he decided to move here.

After arriving in the Islands, Hernandez discovered there was little knowledge of or appreciation for doo-wop music.

“I said, ‘Wow, I would love to introduce the people of Hawaii to that music that I am so passionate about,” he says.

And so he did. Hernandez formed the Love Notes, a doo-wop revival group. At its height, the group consisted of 18 on stage, not including those behind the scenes, who played a role in everything from lighting to promotions.

Hernandez credits much of the group’s success to individuals such as Al Harrington and Tom Moffatt, who provided the Love Notes with many opportunities to perform.

The group no longer performs regularly but does entertain at special events – it was the opening act for Bruno’s last concert in Honolulu.

Now, Hernandez is working on a book, titled From Brooklyn To Mars. Detailing the family’s history and every key event that led to the moment Bruno left for California after graduating from Roosevelt High School, Hernandez hopes to dispel misinformation he has seen throughout the Internet. The book, which is near completion, also will feature personal family photos.

Never one to step away from music, he continues to conceive innovative musical inventions.

“I hope to be one of the first guys who ever combines beebop, doo-wop and hip-hop,” he says, of his latest project.

Becoming Bruno

At just under 2-and-a-half years old, Pete Jr. was introduced in Hernandez’s show as Little Elvis.

It was an act the boy had been cultivating after learning to use the family’s VCR to watch and rewatch videos of Elvis from Hernandez’s collection of memorabilia.

“He was a ham,” admits Hernandez. “As soon as he could walk and express himself, he, like, had to be in the middle of everything and wanted to be a part of whoever he’d seen on TV.”

Fans also may remember him from his brief appearance as Little Elvis in the film Honeymoon in Vegas. Still a young boy, he spent two full days waiting to be called to set. Finally, at the end of the second day, while Bruno slept spread out on chairs beside him, someone summoned Hernandez to bring Bruno to the stage.

A professional despite his age, Bruno woke up and did his job.

“Somehow, some way, he shakes it off and he got on that stage,” says Hernandez.

His desire to perform was unstoppable. His next venture resulted in his own band, the School Boys.

“And sure enough, they’d come out and steal the show,” he says.

In the years that followed, as the boy who would be Bruno honed and crafted a showmanship that has enabled him to stand out in a crowd of many looking for a big break, it was his family that continued to propel him.

“Bruno is the product of a lot of love from all his family,” says Hernandez.

“No woman could ever love Bruno as much as his late mother (Bernadette Bayot) did, and no man could ever love Bruno as much as I love him.”

Being Bruno

Just four years ago, Mars played a show at Royal Hawaiian Center. Tickets cost only $25.

This weekend, Mars will perform three sold-out shows at Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena, which seats about 8,000. And as was well-documented, tickets for this concert disappeared within minutes and weren’t nearly as inexpensive.

None of this, however, has changed the way Hernandez sees his “baby boy.”

Hernandez says the family remains tightly knit. If he isn’t regularly talking with Bruno, they’re texting.

Talent and entertainment remain a family affair, with Mars’ brother Eric performing and touring with him on drums, and his sisters – Tiara, Tahiti and Presley Hernandez, and Jaime Kailani Bayot – making a name for themselves as The LYLAS with their own WE tv show.

Hernandez emanates the epitome of a proud father, with nothing but praise for his children’s endeavors. It’s an excited love for his family that is a barely contained, a palpable excitement that charges the air with an ability to put a smile on anyone’s face.

“I’m the proudest man in the world of Bruno Mars and his brother and sisters, and all the people who helped him get to where he is now,” he says. “I’m excited for him, for his sisters, for his brother. I’m so excited that I hope to be blessed with as much time as possible to see how far they go into the universe.”

Co-sign. His schedule this year looks crazy. Even when he gets a short break from his tour he's got performances lined up I just pray he paces himself and doesnt do too much and burn himself out.

Speaking of his tour, Bruno is back in the States now, back in his home state of Hawaii. Tomorrow he kicks off one of THREE sold-out concerts there! (April 18th, 19th and 21st)

It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when Bruno Mars worried the Blaisdell Arena was too big for him.

More than two decades after turning heads as "Little Elvis," the Roosevelt graduate returns home an international superstar.

Bruno Mars' road to the Super Bowl and super stardom started in Waikiki showrooms as a talented toddler. His dad Peter Hernandez told us, "He was the star of the show and I had him on a platform because you could barely see him on the stage he was so tiny."

The world's youngest Elvis impersonator stole the show from his father's 18-piece Doowop group the Love Notes by mastering the King of Rock's moves. He started studying his Dad's tapes when he was 3. Peter says, "He would take that tape. Sometimes I'd get up to use the restroom at 3 a.m. There he was standing there, moving his hips and I would say son, you've got to go to sleep and he'd say wait, just one more minute. I've almost got it and he did the same with Michael Jackson."

His dad thought hitting the jackpot would be to headline in Las Vegas. Bruno had bigger plans.

In a Hawaii Moving Company interview, a 13-year-old Bruno told interviewers his goal, as he said, "Hopefully be a famous entertainer."

His proud pop said, "Bruno somehow deep in his soul, feels like he knew from a very young age that he was going to conquer the world with his music.

Man, it was like a meteor jumping from level to level and I watched him play rooms this size."

The room Hernandez was referring to could only fit 10 people comfortably. That's sure changed.

At 17, Bruno left a successful showbiz career in Hawaii for Hollywood, and a long climb to the top of the charts."It wasn't on my time" he told former Hawaii News Now reporter Teri Okita before winning his first Grammy in 2011.

Bruno didn't want to come home to Hawaii a failure. His determination to "make it' on his terms paid off with back to back hits "Nothing on You" and "billionaire" and homecoming concert in 2010.

In a WMG Documentary called "Coming Home" in 2010, Bruno describes his big moment, saying "They called and asked if I would do a Hawaii concert. I thought sure. I can see family. They said the Blaisdell Arena. I said, oh that's big. I don't know if I can handle all that. But it sold out."

Now 28, Bruno returns home again for three sold out shows, boosted by his record setting Super Bowl halftime show.

His proud pop explains the significance of that show, saying, "I knew if you didn't know the name Bruno Mars and you hadn't seen a concert, you got a taste of what this young man was all about and I knew this was going to be another pinnacle point that will take him from here to here."

Tickets still available for Bruno Mars' Blaisdell concerts

"It's chaotic, it's bananas, it's absolutely overwhelming". That's how 102.7 Da Bomb DJ Steezy describes the hype leading up to the three Bruno Mars concerts happening April 18-20 at the Blaisdell Arena.

During a conversation, he takes time to answer phone calls from listeners still trying to find tickets. Although they've been sold out for months, 102.7 Da Bomb is giving people a chance to score a pair at the last minute.

"We have front row seats to give away, so close you can probably touch Bruno if he decides to come over. You can probably smell what cologne he's wearing" said Steezy.

The promotion is simple. Listeners have been challenged to make the biggest, baddest Bruno sign possible, then submit a photo via 102.7's website or Instagram account.

A winner will be announced live on air Friday morning between 6-10am.

For those looking for the sure thing, tickets are available through individual sales. People are selling them on sites like stubhub.com and craigslist. Prices we saw ranged from the low hundreds of dollars to one thousand dollars.

While expensive, the prices have come down significantly after the initial crush to get them. As the concert gets closer, the competition between buyers shifts to the sellers looking to unload them.

Traditionally, individual ticket sale prices usually drop in price the closer and closer an event gets. For Bruno Mars fans, however, no price is too high.

Said Steezy of the concert: "Right now, the Bruno Mars show I feel is THE ONE of 2014. It's THE concert to be at".

Bruno Mars Auctioning Off Backstage Pass For Charity

Bruno Mars is giving his fans a chance to win a backstage pass and help those who need a little assistance at the same time.

The acclaimed singer is presently scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 14. Those who are planning to attend the concert can toss out some extra cash to win an opportunity to meet Mars behind-the-scenes. However, you’re going to need quite a bit of money in your couch cushions to make that happen.

According to Look to the Stars, Bruno Mars is auctioning off a backstage pass to help benefit the teachers and students at the Stephen Gaynor School. The institution describes itself as follows:

“Our school is an independent, non-profit Lower and Middle School for bright students with learning differences. Our school comprises nearly 330 students ages three to 14 with a range of learning challenges, from Attention Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to speech, language, and motor delays.”

The lucky Bruno Mars fan who snags the backstage pass can bring along three friends to meet the performer at Madison Square Garden. The Charitybuzz website estimates the pass’ worth at $5,000, though it didn’t take long for that number to double in size.

As of this writing, those who want to meet up with Mars at the NYC gig will need to cough up around $10,500 for the pass. Since there are still 11 days left to place bids, there’s a very strong chance that this number will continue to rise. In other words, having quite a bit of disposable income is a plus. At least the winner knows that the money is going to a good cause instead of Bruno’s already sizable bank account.

The Inquisitr previously reported that the Super Bowl Halftime Show performer was one of many musicians profiled in a recent article by the folks over at Parade magazine. According to the publication, Bruno Mars earned a staggering $38 million over the course of 2013. Given his continued popularity, his paycheck will probably swell considerably during 2014.

Since the guy has quite a bit of money tucked safely under his mattress, he doesn’t mind spreading it around to those who need a little help. Mars reportedly donated $100,000 to people struggling to recover from Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines. In short: Bruno is just a charitable guy.

Bruno Mars And His Band Are Simply ‘Killing It,’ Says Lee Brice

Bruno Mars is receiving good reviews from fans, critics, and musicians alike.

The “When I Was Your Man” crooner recently took his tour to folks on the other side of the pond, shows that seemingly left everyone thoroughly impressed with his on-stage abilities. People from all walks of life seem to think the singer is the bee’s knees. If you’re unfamiliar with the idiom, then rest assured that it’s a very good thing.

One person who believes Bruno Mars is the full package is country singer Lee Brice. During his chat with the boys and girls at HitFix, the musician admitted that he’s a pretty big fan of the Hawaiian singer. Unfortunately, Brice also admits that he’ll never cut a rug like Mars.

“I cannot dance like him. I think I can sometimes If I’ve had enough. I loved his record. We were in Salt Lake City and he happened to be playing the arena. We were playing the amphitheater with Brad Paisley. I took off and went to see the Bruno show right after [my] set and it just killed me,” the singer explained.

He added, “One of the things I loved about it was it wasn’t a lot of fire and lights and crap, it’s just a nice tight set of lights and a band that is killing it and a man who is singing his soul out. It was about him, the singer, the writer, and the player, and producer; that’s what I’m shooting for.”

Brice isn’t the only celebrity who believes that Bruno Mars is a swell guy. The folks at MTV News UK recently talked to Anne Hathaway during her Rio 2 press junket. According to the Dark Knight Rises star, Mars is a “lovely” guy. It’s pretty hard to find someone who has a cross word to say about the singer these days.

Even his childhood friends seem to think Bruno is an incredible human being. The Inquisitr previously reported that some of his old pals believe the singer “didn’t miss a beat” back in the day.

“Sometimes, I’d get up to use the restroom at 3 a.m., [and] there he was standing there, moving his hips and I would say, ‘Son, you’ve got to go to sleep,’ and he’d say, ‘Wait, just one more minute. I’ve almost got it,’” the singer’s father told Hawaii News Now.

Bruno Mars’ return to Honolulu on Friday for the first of three sold-out shows at Blaisdell Arena was like Christmas for his fans — a day eagerly anticipated for months before it actually arrived.

Mars’ fans certainly got everything they’d been waiting for. Mars hit all the high falsetto notes on cue, busted out some old school dance moves along with slick contemporary choreography, switched things up several times on guitar and played drums as well.

The set list included most of his most popular work to date. “Just The Way You Are,” his Grammy Award-winning pop hit, was one of the highlight numbers and quickly became a spontaneous audience sing-along. He introduced “When I Was Your Man” as “the hardest song I’ve ever had to write or sing” and made it the most melancholy and depressing spot in the show.

Mars and his band, The Hooligans, took the stage shortly before 10 p.m. Friday and worked for almost 90 minutes. Two large video screens gave most of the audience a close-up view of the action, while a large video backdrop displayed an assortment of real-time footage and recorded clips.

The show has a few surprises in it, but anyone who remotely cares probably already knows what they are thanks to the Internet. Professional photographers were not allowed inside Blaisdell Arena, but with all the smart phones in use throughout the performance, big chunks of it are probably already up for free viewing on YouTube.

The crowd included many notables. Actor Daniel Dae Kim slipped in without fanfare. Former UH basketball star Artie Wilson watched the show from a seat in the risers as did former Major League Baseball player Benny Agbayani and his wife, Neila.

Honolulu resident Henry Ajitomi wasn’t as lucky; he were there alone because his wife had a headache. Rush Patel lucked out; he’d stopped by the box office on a whim and discovered that although the show was supposedly sold out, tickets were still available.

The crowd also included plenty of young women in tight dresses, and a surprising number of pre-teens checking it out with their parents as chaperones.

Although Honolulu is the umpteenth stop on Mars’ Moonshine Jungle tour that began almost a year ago, he did a bit more to acknowledge his birth place than a pro forma shout-out almost every concert artist does in almost every town they play. Most notably, he changed the lyrics of “Billionaire” to mention Zippy’s and “the cover of MidWeek.”

The MidWeek reference was something of an inside joke for Hawaii residents old enough to remember Bruno was on the cover of MidWeek with Glenn Medeiros and Melveen Leed back in the early 1990s when he performed as The World’s Youngest Elvis.

He also made a joking reference to women from Waianae, and developed the phrase, “Howzit, auntie?” into a recurring punch line.

Hawaii also got something special with Friday’s two opening acts. Mars’ father, Pete “Dr. Doo Wop” Hernandez, whose group, the Love Notes, opened the 2010 Bruno Mars concert here, did it again this year, but in a bigger way.

This time, Hernandez and Love Notes were reenforced with a full Latin band for a first-time blending of traditional doo-wop with Latin rhythms. Hawaii has known Hernandez for years as an uncompromising advocate of classic doo-wop, but he showed on Friday that he is also a charismatic Latin percussionist who can give Sheila E. a run for her money.

Old-time Love Notes members Felix Almestica Bonet and Mike Baker — who were part of the group during its heyday at the Esprit Lounge in the Sheraton Waikiki — distinguished themselves as vocalists.

Local reggae band The Green got a longer set as the second opener and showed they’re on track to becoming arena headliners as well.
