I think it's perfect someone as shady as Pebbles is now an ordained minister.

You know, as the resident Jesus Freak on the board, I completely give that a side eye...I remember seeing her speaking in tongues on one of those Christian channels praying for Whitney Houston while she was in the throes of her addiction....nothing really felt authentic to me about it in the least...

funny how Pebbles and her daughter are constantly talking about the movie, trying desperately to get media attention and keep their names in the headlines rolleyes But T-Boz and Chili are moving on with their lives and careers. These ladies have class.

lol It's funnier that you see it that way. None of their names have been in the headlines recently. T-Boz and Chili's movie stirred all this old drama back up and now the Reids are responding to it. shrug

In a way that sort of pours cement over the grave of this whole situation. Pebb's "legacy" is now that she was a one hit wonder that abused a gold mine group that she formed. Thats why she doesn't get "headlines" because she is a nobody. An 80s compilation artist.

I'm not a Pebbles fan but in defense of her she's had a few hits thanks to Babyface. The thing is though none of them are very memorable and like it's been said no one is really has been checking for her since 1991.

Of course you'd say that as someone who's not a fan. Her career was relatively fleeting, but she was certainly quite popular in that time. While she was mainly a vehicle for LaFace compositions, she made her biggest crossover success without them. She has sole writing credit for "Mercedes Boy" and she co-produced it with Charlie Wilson.

Interestingly enough, she actually has one more R&B #1 hit than TLC does. lol

The Always hits ran well into 1991. "Are You Ready" was a minor hit in 1995, but that was it. However, her third album was critically acclaimed. It was completely slept on, but it's a pretty good album. Pebbles was never known for her voice, but the jazzy feel and arrangements really suited her. There's even a cover of "I Can't Help It" on there.

Nope, not R&B. Stalled at #4 behind "One More Chance," "Don't Take It Personal," and "Boombastic." "Waterfalls" cemented TLC as a crossover act and every subsequent major single performed better on the Hot 100 than the R&B charts.

Oddly enough though songs can go number one and people don't even notice

or care. I would say Giving You The Benefit is one of those songs. Jeffrey Osborne

had a number 1 hit with She's On The Left in 1988. How many people remember

or even care about that song and it wasn't a bad song but it wouldn't even be on

the radar of most Jeffrey Osborne fans.

falloff Now you're just being ridiculous. Obviously someone noticed and cared, it was the #1 R&B song in the country (both radio and sales IIRC). Now "remembered" is something different, but then you're talking about anecdotal evidence. Not many songs from that period are popular now. So what? I personally remember it vividly.

FTR, I love "She's on the Left," I knew it hit #1, and I still remember like it was yesterday. But feel free to continue speaking for all his fans and music fans in general. shrug

If we couldn't argue opinions the internet would be a lot less useful (or fun). I have no problem disagreeing; I just have an issue where opinions being treated as facts. As for Jeffrey Osbourne, "She's on the Left" is outside the vein of most of his work, so it's understandable that he wouldn't perform it. "My Ding-a-Ling" was Chuck Berry's only Hot 100 #1, but it's never been a staple in his live act (for good reason). OTOH, I'm sure there are plenty of people who count those songs as their favorites from the respective artists. To assume otherwise based on personal taste and limited anecdotal evidence is a little arrogant. shrug

Yeah but you conveniently fail to acknowledge the fact that TLC had more success period. No matter whether they had a number 1 hit on the Hot 100, country charts, hip hop, etc. They also had some hits that narrowly missed number 1 peaking at number 2 not to mention top ten singles.

it's interesting that,Pebbles was married to one of the hottest producers in the music biz (LA Reid) and yet, that wasn't enough to sustain her own solo career. You'd think that she would have demanded that her husband give some of those amazing songs to her...lol...artists like Karyn White and Toni Braxton were getting material that was far superior.

I didn't "conveniently fail to acknowledge" anything. Is there anybody who didn't know that TLC was a more successful act? They sold way more records, had way more crossover/mainstream success, and had a much longer sustained period of success (and work in general). All of that was probably known by everyone in this thread. I just mentioned an interesting fact that most people didn't know — which is obvious because several of you tried to argue it.

Here we go again...

1. AFAIC, Pebbles did get their best material. I like Karyn White just fine, but I'd definitely take Pebbles's LaFace songs over hers any day of the week. For instance, "Love Makes Things Happen" is a much better duet with Face than "Love Saw It" to my ears and I think "Girlfriend" is at least a billion times better than "The Way You Love Me."

2. The rise of Toni Braxton was most likely coinciding with the breakup of the Reid marriage. Besides, many of those songs were written for Anita Baker.

And now we're back to random anecdotal evidence. So you're positive that most people only remember Pebbles for "Girlfriend" despite "Mercedes Boy" being her biggest pop hit? Did you take a poll? lol
