Ed Motta - the man with a million LPs! Funk★U : How would you define “AOR” ? Ed Motta : The terminology says its releated only to rock but it has a bigger range since artists like Al Jarreau, EW&F, Rene & Angela, are inside the AOR world. To me, AOR is state of the art of pop music regarding music for itself and the technical side of recording & mixing The production standards are really high on this record. How much time did you spend on it ? I might say one year between demo tapes, rhythm tracks, harmony layers and months mixing. Each song took more than a week to mix. Chinese porcelain ! You have already released some AOR material on previous records like Dweezil (2002) or Poptical (2003). Is this new album a full AOR concept-album ? I feel AOR influence since the begining but sure now I made something more specific. AOR mania has been with me for a long long time… Why did you chose to release an English-sung version of AOR ? I think the “língua franca” of my music is english, all my references, etc. My music my voice everyrhing sounds better in english. If you were born in Malasia but loves jazz or blues theres no escape you will need to check the Grand Cru of popular music. Who are the guest musicians on AOR ? What did they bring to the record ? Master David T.Walker is my teenage dream to hear him on this ambient. Bluey from Incognito my superbrotha. Several top studio cats from Rio, creme de la Creme. Each one works as an actor that has something to say in the same vein as Peter Lorre or Charles Laughton. Tracks like “Dondi” or “Smile” have a similar production to Steely Dan. Is Steely Dan a musical reference for you? What is your favorite Steely Dan album ? Steely Dan changed my life, I started to buy jazz records because of them and to study harmony. My favorites are Katy Lied & Aja. Also The Royal Scam, the funkiest one thanks to the genius of Bernard Purdie. Do you have plans to tour this album in Europe? Yes, I was unfortunately suffering airplane panic I had some tours canceled. Thanks to life now I am better I just went to Berlin I feel I can tour back. I miss France and the wines I love from Burgundy & Loire and the outstanding gastronomy. A good part of my money goes to France since I only drink french wines. Some from Italy but 98% in my mind and taste is France and these two regions. Natural/bio wines have been my mania for the last 5 years. Let’s talk about your incredible record collection : What are your last acquisitions ? Do you have an estimation of the nomber of records you own or have you lost count ? Today its almost 30 000 records and 5 000 10 inches. No mixes, no remixes, no compilations, no 12 inches with one song. For anyone who likes Steely Dan, there's also a group called State Cows who has that sound. They released an album in 2010 and are supposed to be recording a new one now. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton | |

Just checked State Cows, definately has that end of seventies West Coast thing going on! But here it is less soul infused, I hear more of a Supertramp influence on top of the Steely Dan vibe. I will definately get their albums too! Their second album has just been released, BTW.

I didn't know it has been released. It looks like it just came out this month. It was a while back that I read they were recording. Yeah, Chico is a fantastic player!
I've had the AOR album on constant repeat as well. And I also think I prefer the Portuguese version over the English one. But that might also be because I had the Portuguese version first and got used to that before receiving the English version on CD.
Anyway, whatever version you are listening to, it is a great album! I just love the sound of this recording, so pristine... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... |

If you're going to get this close to a SD/Fagen sounding arrangements, you're expecting an interesting story and clever lyrics. That's a danger zone right there.

Haha, so funny! This is exactly what I was thinking when I received the English version and listened to it the first time.
The English lyrics are written by someone else, and unfortunately I don't think they are very good/interesting. And Ed's pronounciation of the English is a bit off at times, which annoys me a bit somehow. So after playing the English version for a few times I have now gone back to enjoying the Portuguese one! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... |
