Dangelo review from Montreal: Cd due in Sept. '13

And what of the long-awaited new record? “Totally brilliant,” promises ?uestlove, a “radical 180 turn” featuring his guitar playing and a unique new keyboard sound, using a guitar processor. The first single, “Really Love,” drops around the 4th of July; the album in its entirety will be released in September, featuring Palladino, ?uestlove, Hargrove, Fred Wesley, Dave, James Gadson, Jesse Johnson, Isaiah Sharkey, Eric Leeds, Cleo Sample and Q-Tip. A tour in support of the album begins in August (U.S.) followed by dates in Europe (October-November). Judging by his Montreal performance, D’Angelo is sure to renew the oxygen supply to his soul-starved fans. Stay tuned.

Concert Review: D’Angelo Rocks Montreal

New album due in September

Local D’Angelo fans had an extra-special reason to anticipate his Montreal performance on May 30: Not only was it one of a few concerts on a brief pre-record-release tour, but it was his first performance in Montreal. Ever.

The critically acclaimed, Grammy-winning R&B singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer has been on extended hiatus since his last tour for Voodoo (2000), the follow-up to Brown Sugar (1995), both of which went platinum. Having all but disappeared, D’Angelo has been gradually resurfacing; his first performance in 12 years took place at Bonnaroo in the summer of 2012, surprising the crowd as the unannounced member of drummer Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson’s SuperJam band. In March D’Angelo played the Brooklyn Bowl, a special “Brothers in Arms” duo show with ?uestlove (one of D’Angelo’s long-time collaborators). The Montreal concert, preceding his eagerly awaited new recording, was one of four, including Aruba, Boston and Toronto.

I hear ya. I agree. The fact that he's embarked on a mini tour might be a good sign that something new is coming soon.

He has a lot of talent, so he needs to just "go for it" and release the music.

Me too. I seem to recall the huge GQ spread promised a late 2012/early 2013 release.

We could play a game . . . WHEN D'ANGELO RELEASED HIS LAST ALBUM . . .

Gas was 1.54 a gallon

The iPod had not yet been released.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was about 9975

How The Grinch Stole Christmas was the top earning movie.

Justin Beiber was 6 years old.

The college class of 2017 was in kindergarten.

William Rehnquist, David Souter, John Paul Stevens and Sandra Day O'Connor were still on the Supreme Court.

Anything else?

Meh.

I refuse to buy into this guy's mystique. He's released two solid albums (I really

like Voodoo but it is overrated), however he's hardly the R&B Jesus we are

making him out to be. I've gotten along just fine without D'Angelo since 2000

and will continue to count on the universe to pick up the slack.

Sure . . . but it's become more of a game than anything else. I'm sure he more than anyone sees the music simply passing him by.

The reply wasn't very clear.

Audiences have waited so long for D'Angelo to release a new album that impatience and frustration have given way to comedy. Chris Rock said D'Angelo was basically living on an island, asking himself what to do with all his talent.

And I think he knows what you've said is true. That the music universe is moving along without him. And by standing still, he's being passed by. But music will definitely benefit from anything he may release now or later.

Your regular fan may want to apotheosize Michael Eugene Archer - and I think that alone is

the reason why there would be any type of impatience and/or frustration with Archer's

career. For since Voodoo was been released, I have discovered that not only are there R&B

artists creating excellent material, but are working towards surpassing all those who we hold

sacred in R&B.

*

So again, since 2001, I may have wondered where D'Angelo was, but was hardly frustrated

or impatient with him.

I have to agree. He's way too overhyped and I just can't get into him like that but he is talented. I'm happy for his fans that he's finally going to release something though, I know how it is to wait for one of your favorite artists to put out anything lol. I'm going to listen to it like everyone else but i'm not exactly anticipating it.

All I know is, i'll be at the San Diego show, in August. Can't wait to witness this. Last time i saw him, I was 30 years old, when he toured for Voodoo. Tomorrow "june 11th." i will be........gulp......42 !!!! Yeah, it's been long overdue, D.
