Record Store Day 2013

Surprised not to see a thread on this (unless I missed it, in which case Mods please combine).

What did everyone pick up?

My budget was a little tight this year, but I managed to snag the following:

The Cure - "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" double LP on red vinyl

The Glove - "Blue Sunshine" on blue vinyl

Mad Season - "Above" - 2lp reissue

Mercury Rev - "Deserted Songs" - a collection of outtakes from the "Deserter's Songs" sessions

David Bowie - "The Stars (are out tonight)" - single on white vinyl

Bob Dylan - "Wigwam" - single

I really wanted the Porno for Pyros release on swirled color vinyl but it was gone at the stores I tried. Also the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Psychocandy" is UK only. Already on eBay but out of my budget, sadly.

The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me highfive This is what I went out to get, and I'm listening to it right now while I watch the playoffs. biggrin

Also grabbed...

Olafur Arnalds - For Now I Am Winter 180 gm 12" (totally stoked!, didn't think I get one of those)

The Dave Brubeck Trio - Distinctive Rhythm Instrumentals 10" (come on! It's a Dave Brubeck ten inch!)
Trey Anastasio - Blue Ash and Other Suburbs 7" picture disc (and man that thing looks cool!)

Page McConnell - Unsung Cities and Movies Never Made 12" (very smartly, Amoeba had this sitting with the Trey Anastasio 7")

Cake - Sheep Go To Heaven 7" (because I've been a fan since they were playing bars in Sacramento, felt like I should support it since it's independently released)

Almost picked up, had 'em in my hands, but put 'em back...

Dave Matthews Band - Live Trax Vol 1 vinyl box set

Flaming Lips - Zaireeka vinyl box set

Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill remix 10"

Ani DiFranco - Buffalo Official Bootleg, I passed on this one because I remembered I was going to order the Dilate double 12" from her website.

The Joy Fomidable - A Minute's Silence 12"

Couldn't find, and would have bought these instead of some of the other stuff if I could have found them...

Deftones - Live Vol 1 12", which sucked, because it's the first in a series and I really wanted it. Probably had more people grabbing it because Chi just passed.

Brian Eno/Grizzly Bear split 12" with the Nicholas Jaar remixes

James Blake 12". The latter is a UK only release, but Bay Area shops often have those. I'm sure the extras will filter over next week.

I didn't.

The problem for me, and a lot of people like me, with releases like this is two-fold.

First, as much as I LOOOOOVE vinyl, the Grateful Dead have been releasing all their archival stuff on CD for the better part of two decades. So I have rows of Grateful Dead vault stuff on the shelves and it seems weird to buy vinyl now (I did pick up the WB remastered studio box set a couple years ago).

Second, Grateful Dead "trading" (which is mostly just downloading these days) is all done digitally. Nearly everything save a couple of mythical performances is easily found. People deep inside the family have even "released" a ton of stuff to the internet that never made it into tape trading circles. As such, I have about 1300 complete shows and hundreds of bits and pieces from the remaining 700 or so that they played. With this release, even though I'm sure it's all been beautifully restored and remastered, I'm pretty sure I have everything on it that didn't come from a newly discovered box deep within the vaults. I know I have every 66 show that is considered good/great, including multiple versions of all but one or two of the tracks on this release. And I know I have the one super rare track, for sure (the only version of Jerry doing the vocals on Promised Land, which was a Bob song from 67-94).

Long answer, sorry. Which is why I said "I didn't" at the top. lol It's a cool item, but I can't justify it's purchase when there are so many other cool things staring me in the face.

Adorecream

We have a second hand bookshop near my home that sells a lot of vinyl. I have already bought a copy of Thriller and the Grace Jones Albums Nightclubbing and Living my life, they also have my phone number if any Prince, Bowie or Madonna records come in.

In all I have about 100 vinyl albums and 12 inch singles, about 30 are Prince or Proteges.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Couldn't be bothered to get hold of the limited editions for this year's RSD. there wasn;t anything on offer to justify me getting up at 5.30 to go down to central London and then queue for 5 hours. That I know from previous RSDs tends to be the drill.

Anyway, most of the really cool stuff, like the South Park 'I'm a Gay Fish' 7 inch, wasn;t out over here.

What I did do howvere was go down to soho later in the day to check out the festivities. Caught a live set by Frank Turner and got he Commodore's 'Machine Gun' on Vinyl. Not an RSD release, but so damn funky that you can't cut it with a knife fro booty!.

It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

Boards Of Canada teases new LP with a covert Record Store Day release

by Marah Eakin April 22, 2013

Eight years after The Campfire Headphase, Boards Of Canada is teasing a new album. Probably. What is definite is that the group released a single 12-inch record for this past weekend’s Record Store Day—that is to say, it released one, single, solitary record, only made available in one store in the entire nation. An employee of Boards Of Canada’s label, Warp, reportedly hand-delivered that record to New York’s Other Music on Friday, and it got slipped into the racks for Saturday, when a lucky fan snatched it up. Five other copies of the record were covertly placed in stores in other countries.

The 12-inch contains a short clip of a new track, heard below, overlaid with a computerized voice saying cryptically, “9-3-6-5-5-7”—whatever that means. Adding to the mystery, the record is titled --/--/--/xxxxxx/--/--. BOC-obsessives, of course, have a number of theories about what that means. The best lead hails from the Twoism message board and notes that, if the numbers are converted to ASCII text, you get the letter “M.” And if the xxxxxx space in the title is meant to be filled with those numbers the voice is reading, then that could mean the “M” is intended to be the fourth letter in a hidden word—a word that may or may not be “summer,” which may or may not be when a new Boards Of Canada album will be released. Or, maybe the band’s just messing with everyone now.

Back in early 2012, Boards Of Canada did seem confirm via its Facebook page that the duo was working on new material. So as with the last eight years, we'll just have to wait and see.

Duran Duran is coming out with a 7" blue vinyl of Is There Something I Should Know, but you'd have to order it if you live in the US. I've got mine ordered from Amazon.ca

My favorite record stores were doing "in-stores" that had lines a block long. RSD is like once every 6 weeks for me anyway . . .
