For sure my fave two funk bands ever...but after HEAVY spins over the last 30 years...Slave takes it for me. Mark's bass is just funk incarnate.

Cameo!
I only say this because I love Cameo's body of work more than I like Slave's. I liked a few Slave songs here and there, but almost all of Cameo's early albums (pre-Word Up) are damn good to me. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

moderatorI'm actually surprised that so far there is more votes for Slave than Cameo. I'm fans of both and while i have more of an appreciation for Mark Adams and Drac as musicians i have to give the nod to Cameo pre Word Up like Prettyman stated. As much as i like Slave they don't quite have that trilogy of excellence like Cameo does with Cameosis, Knights of The Sound Table, and Alligator Woman. And that does not include the Feel Me album which is excellent too. [Edited 4/2/13 16:07pm] Don't laugh at my funk

Cameo I agree with daPrettyman....Slave is a great band with some kickass jams but Cameo has a stronger catalog. | |

I'd rather gouge out my eyes, cut off my left testicle, have sex with a chicken, run naked thru a patch of poison ivy or drop a nuclear bomb on North Korea before i choose between Cameo or Slave !....
Seriously though, i would barely pick Cameo over Slave. Both bands brought the Funk and slow jams something fierce but arguably Cameo did it better longer and with a little more creativity than Slave.

Seriously though, i would barely pick Cameo over Slave. Both bands brought the Funk and slow jams something fierce but arguably, Cameo did it better a little longer and with a little more creativity. [Edited 4/3/13 17:48pm] -That's very true. There are actually more Cameo songs that I like than Slave songs. But, I happen to like the few Slave songs more than the many Cameo songs. "Stone Jam" the album and song is classic funk at it's very best! With "Dreamin'", "Sizzlin' Hot" and "Starting Over" added to the mix....the album should've just been called "FUNK".And the classic "Slide"......funk with a side of rock!!!! That's what it sounds like to me anyway!Their "Showtime" album was pretty good too. Although I don't think it was a big hit. I still like "Party Lites" and "Spice of My Life". And "Baby Sinister" and "Volcano Rupture" - recent discoveries for me - are both "FON-KAY". Their funk had a little more nastiness to it than Cameo's funk. It was just down and diryt at times. Cameo's funk was more playful and clean....to me. I actually thought about this, too. But accounting for the side-projects, spinoffs & production work of each just made my head hurt all the more in choosing
Cameo: La Connection, Mantra, MCB, Wynd Chymes, Cashflow, Tomi's solo joints, Icemosis soundtrack....plus assd production credits
Slave: Aurra, Arrington solo stuff, Drac, Civil Attack, Slave-Aurra Crew, Deja, Steve Washington's solo....plus assd production credits

Guess you can tell by my avatar which one I'm choosing. I'll allow that Cameo probably had better songwriting...but Slave just hits me in my gut in a way that Cameo doesn't...it's just a raw funk thing...not as tight as Cameo, but more of a loose raw groove.....
Like this tune..."Coming Soon" Just a Lumbering thing that starts easy, and then Morphs into Monster Funk, with Arrington's growling Vampire vocals....Cameo's thing was much tighter, they would never have this loose approach...again, I love both ...but it's just something about this "Monster" feel that Slave had...

Can I just vote for Tomi Jenkins because I used to love me some him. Seriously though I give a slight nod to Cameo as another poster said - for their body of work.
