How would you rate Lionel Richie as a singer?

One of the best to ever do it, average or not to your taste?

I personally love Lionel's voice! Probably one of my favorite slow jan voices. He's one of those artists like R. Kelly who I can sometimes look past the awful lyrics cause I love there voice so much. Hell Lionel could sing death metal or Spanish commercial jingles and ill dig it.
Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

IT's weird, because to me, Lionel has such a commercial, muzaky voice

With the right material, I rank him as one of the greatest male vocalists ever.

Lionel Richie is like Diana Ross.

He is one of those artists who do not have an impressive voice but amazing music.

Lionel understands music and what makes a great song which is why he is considered to be more talented then someone with a 5 octave range.

This is the problem we have with current R&B artists today, they all have good voices but they have cheesy and hokey material that does not make their music memorable.

I totally agree with that. It's as if they want to put every singer into a box and it doesn't always work. "hokey material" is not necessarilly a bad thing (to me), but if you are an "artist" or plan to make timeless music.

I agree but that is because they are not artists to begin with. Lionel made good music because he took pride in his craft and because he was a great artist. I am not a HUGE fan but he is definitly very talented and a good artist.

i don't agree at all.Just because you don't find Lionel voice amazing it doesn't mean he isn't a great singer.Lionel have range.he sings higher then your average male singer.he can sing low check some of the Commodores songs.i find Lionel,Sugarfoot and Larry B. from Cameo to be the best singers in funk.

Lionel has a great voice. I prefer his material during his time with the Commodores. My favorite songs from those days, Easy, Zoom, Still, Sail On, Just To Be Close To You, & Jesus Is Love to name a few.

His pleading vocals on "Say Yeah", the overlooked lover's declaration from the Commordores's Flying High album, gives the body chills. That's some singin' right thar! When he achieved solo commerical success, I heard less passion in his voice.

not one of the best ever, but not mediocre, too.
I like his voice, and a few songs ... just leave it like that.
