^^How is an instrumental song "rap"?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I feel you. It dominated much of both 1989 and 1990.

LOL. Incidentally, "Fight the Power" was Pazz & Jop's #1 single of '89. For those who don't know, Moonbeam was our resident Pazz & Jop Org compiler.

The song is inextricably intertwined with Do The Right Thing and IIRC appeared on the soundtrack, both in 1989. Though it charted Billboard AND was featured on Fear of a Black Planet in 1990, 1989's the number.

Though the "Moonbeam Rule" could also be called the Thriller Rule, as it dropped in '82, but dominated the charts for the next 1.5-2 years.

Very good question. I'll bite.

A "rap" song may not by definition be instrumental.

A "hip-hop" song, however, could be. One of the greatest hip-hop albums of the 21st century is mostly instrumental.
