does anyone else think Mary J is overrated???

I am sorry....i was listen to VH1 Soul and her song "i'm going down" was on...i have always liked the song...but her vocals are not that good... i am curious what her natrual singing voice would be?? I know when singers scream and the range goes up and down the public is kissing thier ass... I am wondering the same thing about Mary J...

She's a good singer, not as good as she once was but, still decent. I don't like the fact that in order for her to put out a good song, she must be depressed.

Nope.

90's Mary >>>

She never was an amazing technical singer, it's the way she was able to convey the emotions of her songs that made her so special.

Nope she is not overrated.

Voice isnt everything. MJB puts a lot of emotion, soul, pain etc., in her vocals/songs which makes up for her not having a "great voice". You can feel where she coming from when she sings certain songs.

Tracks like these are proof:

Maybe the post Breakthrough Mary (after 2005) is overrated but MJB before that (primarily in the 90's) was really good IMO.

Mary in her artistic prime (1992-2001) will never be overrated...

I'm one who always felt that she was. For me her screaming is way over the top.

A big part of her popularity was her being the first female voice for the

merge of r&b/hip hop in the early nineties.

From her first album, I just never got it. I'll admit I've liked a few songs, but yes...she is extremely overrated.

The thing that bothers me is that in a few more years, folks like her, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye, Mariah...they're all going to be put into the Hall of Fame, probably on their first year of eligibility.

Kinda lessens those that came before IMHO.

She used to be so brilliant.

I have been re-discovering 'Share my world' - it's so sweet - a solid r&b album.

Even her latest singles '258" and 'Mr Wrong' are strong IMO.

In regards to her voice - it has emotion and soul - that counts for a lot.

Over the years, I have posted about my utter dislike of her voice... nod

She reminds me of the lady in the church choir who grabs every solo, knowing Damn Well she can't sing.

She sweats, jumps up and down, and takes "emoting" to ridiculous lengths... people say, "Mary sang!!" but all she did was put on an off-key show... disbelief

I have gotten into many skirmishes on here & in real life, but I do not like her at all, and will not back down... talk to the hand

Her 90s CDs can't be overrated. I am a little surprised at her longevity (I always am, when an act makes it past ten years), but I think she earned it.

I have heard very little of her music but I don't think I could be a fan of someone that is so rude and full of themselves. Over ten years ago Much Music showed an interview clip of her where she was acting like an entitled and insufferable bitch, after seeing that kind of behaviour coming from a grown woman it completely turned me off from ever listening to any of her music.

Generally I am able to separate bad behaviour from the music, if the music is great. The little I have heard from her was very average and for me she is not a brilliant enough musician to get a pass for acting like an asshole.

This. I've never been an over the top fan of hers but I did like some of her songs during this period, however, the "Mary" album is the last album I purchased by her. Like Shorttrini, it's a shame that she puts out her best music when either she's depressed or drugged out (which she admitted she was during this time period).

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

To piggyback off of this, (only because it's the two of you, and I know I can get away with it...lol) some of Mary's best songs, are the one's that did not make an album, that she had been working on, at the time. I've gone on Wiki, typed in, "Unreleased Mary J songs," and a boat load of unreleased one came up. I then punched them into Youtube, and they sound great. Why some of them, failed to make their intended album, is beyond me.

Pitch-averse at times and technically limited, but she emotes well and has delivered hits over the years. Maybe she's underrated...

What does this have to do with anything? Many great and bad artists shoot horrible tv commercials. That doesn't make them overrated artists.

I remember when she came through my city this past summer with

DAngelo and one of my co workers was so excited about going to see

Mary J and asked me if i was going. I'm like bro i am so not a fan of hers.

I can count on one hand the number of her songs i would listen to without

changing the radio dial or playing my own music. I wouldn't go to see her

if it was free.

I don't think much of her as a singer. She's often off-key (I recall a reviewer who once said that the main person she should thank in her album credits is whoever is in charge of auto-tuning her vocals)

I think she gets by mainly from audience identification- she's the "sista from around the way who's been wronged, and ain't gonna take it no mo' "...
