I think you might want to re-title this thread, "The Greatest Female and Male Popular Music Singers Since the Advent of Sound Recording."

Unless, of course, you plan to include people like Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Leontyne Price and Beverly Sills. And acknowledge the fact you can (realistically) only include people who were around after the invention of sound recording - not "all time."

Years ago, probably for the millennium, Rolling Stone asked current musicians and writers to name the best songs of the past 1000 years. Almost none of the songs mentioned pre-dated around 1920. Richard Thompson was the only person who actually went back 1000 years. They didn't include his essay (morons), but he went on to build an entire tour around the idea. You have not lived until you have heard this brilliant musician do "Oops I Did It Again" in the style of the 12th century.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Interesting point, I agree.

I was with you until I saw Joe Thomas on there. I always thought he was just an average singer. I know this is all subjective, but I think there are others more that are more deserving than Joe. Just an observation.

Right on baby!!

Most people don't get Bob at all and it's too damn bad. He sings with such emotion and rawness. I certainly don't consider Bob to be one of the greatest singers of all time, but he does sing with passion and I definitely feel it. That's why so many of this songs make me emo. cry
