I just remember that scene in What's love got to Do With It where Tina tells Ike he keeps playing the same damn song over and over

Technically, yeah they did but Ike was known to play piano, guitar and drums real well. He was also the master of their stage shows, which is a reason they became popular with audiences worldwide. Ike was a master of the blues and early R&B. But they did record the same song eleven million times sometimes.

Little Richard once said Ike's opening piano licks in "Rocket 88" inspired "Good Golly Miss Molly". Elvis was also fascinated by Ike and the Kings of Rhythm; he once told him that when I&T played Vegas. So yeah I think he was real talented. Maybe he was too complacent when it came to material especially concerning Tina, but overall yeah he was really good.

Yes he was extremely talented. I read somewhere that he was shy about singing lead which why he often hired lead singers for his band and didn't take the duty on himself (most of the time). He wanted to be more in the background. But it's also true that some of those songs did sound the same, but it wasn't that uncommon, hell didn't Motown have a slew of records that sounded the same? Stax too?

Don't forget James Brown and his numerous redos of the same song under different titles. But yeah Ike had stage fright. Most of the time during the I&T shows he'd have his back turned to the audience and then would turn around so people could see him playing guitar. Funny thing about that story? It didn't happen like that. Maybe that was to make it humorous. In Tina's account, they were at a car when someone gave her pound cake. She didn't wanna eat but Ike was like "you gonna eat it" lol I don't even think Ike called her "Anna Mae" either. Maybe "Ann" or "Tina" but never Anna Mae, least that's my recollection.

Turns out to be more of a comedy than a drama movie. I can't tell you how many scenes and lines me and family members and friends recite and have a good laugh. Don't get me wrong, there wasn't any bad acting at all, it was just the situations "conjured up" to make the movie more dramatic that was funny.

Last weekend when I cut on my television that movie "The Accused" was on with Jodie Foster in it, and it was RIGHT ON the gang rape scene...urgh. I wasn't right for the rest of the day.

I agree. It did seem like a comedy at some parts. They overdid the drama IMHO.

I once took this Intro to Mass Communications class and the professor showed us that scene from the movie intercut with some of the more raucuos music videos of the time. The point was how negative of an influence MTV was and how it's hard to differentiate between what you were viewing. One of the videos featured in this mash-up; "Partyman".

It's an interesting arguement.

HEY YO!

If you take Ikes personal life and put it aside for a minute and focus on his musical talent.

I would say he was right up there with the greatest.

He was an instrumental pillar to the early rock n roll scene.

Fantastic Piano player and a gun on the guitar.

If you watch or read many docos on history of music etc there will be mentions of Ike Turner.

I have a kings of rhythm best of cd and it is awesome.

I also read in a prince interview i think in guitar world or some other magazine and they asked Prince about what an upcoming artist/musician should listen to when first starting out...and he said Joni Mitchell and that nobody was better than Ike Turner.

So even Prince gave props to Ike.
