The Voice Trumps The X Factor Head-to-Head

And Round 1 of The Voice-The X Factor face-off goes to... The Voice.

The NBC hit, whose expansion to a third night peeved Simon Cowell, drew 10.7 million viewers and a 3.3 rating in the adults 18-to-49 demographic Wednesday, beating The X Factor's 7.5 million and 2.7 in the 8 o'clock hour.

The X Factor, which featured the judging debuts of Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, averaged 8.5 million and a 3.3 rating for its two-hour opener to tie The Voice for the night in the demo. That's down from its Season 1 premiere, which earned 12.5 million viewers and a 4.4.

Fox won the night in the demo, but NBC took viewership honors. America's Got Talent pulled in 11 million viewers and a 2.9, while the special series premiere of Guys with Kids drew 6.3 million viewers and a 2.2.

Based on Nielsen's viewership ratings. Oh yeah, always reliable and accurate.

So you think everyone in the country should have what they watch monitored to be more accurate?

No, Nielsen has acknowledged that it needs to increase sample sizes to ensure better results. At present its audience measurment system is no better than reading tea leaves.

They need some kind of hook-up where anyone who wants to can have their viewing monitored via tv-internet hook-up to a monitoring website.

As for this thread, please kill X-Factor! Simon et al needs to go!

Anybody who watches either of these shows deserves a Nielsen pimp slap.

All of us are represented by Nielsen viewers in our demographic, that wouldn't work. Higher sample size makes more sense.

There was some little girl on The X Factor yesterday that blew everyone away. After seeing so many of those over the years on these types of shows...I really didn't care. lol

One of Nielsen's biggest problems is its failure to adapt to changing technology. For example, Nielsen doesn't count people who watch TV shows on their computers, tablets and phones. Aside from that, Nielsen samples a mere 25K households to represent 115M households that own TVs. That's why I'm skeptical about the company's numbers.

i dont think having a sample is a problem alot of things r basedon sample data and they use complex statistical formulas to come up with the results. These r tried and tested methods which have proved to be correct over time. Niesen is one of the best in projecting

After years of complaints from the networks, this past June Nielsen vowed to increase its sample size and install new measurement devices. If the system is perfect as is, why make the changes?

Here's one reason: disgruntled Nielsen clients are leaving and signing with its main competitor, Rentrak, who is gaining ground in the ratings market because of its larger sample.

Nielsens' monopoly in TV measurement is nearing its end.
