Pat Hare - I'm Gonna Murder My Baby (proto heavy metal, so the critics say)

This guy has been credited with influencing the heavy metal genre with his heavily distorted guitar work.

An argument could also be made for Willie Kizart's guitar on an earlier recording...

...Rocket 88 (1951)

Jackie Brenston & his Delta Cats (in reality Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm)

Legend has it that the guitar sound was due to a damaged speaker in Kizart's amp.
(Exactly how the damage occurred is unclear).
Sam Phillips liked the sound and used it in the recording.

The distortion is not as dramatic as Pat Hare's guitar on James Cotton's...

...Cotton Crop Blues / Hold Me In Your Arms tracks (1954)

Yeah I noticed how hard the distortion was on Rocket 88. Ike Turner insisted until his death that that was an accident.
