Russian official targets Madonna with crude tweet

A senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin used an obscene Twitter post to attack Madonna after the pop star called for the release of three women who face prison over an irreverent performance in Moscow's main cathedral.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, a nationalist politician and former envoy to NATO, posted the tweet after Madonna told a Moscow concert audience the jailed members of punk band Pussy Riot were "courageous" and deserved to be free.

"Every ex-wh*re tends to lecture everybody with age. Especially during world tours and concerts," Rogozin, who now leads Russia's drive to upgrade the army and defence industry, wrote in a tweet in English.

The microblog posting was a crudely worded echo of frequent warnings by Russian officials that Moscow will not accept Western "preaching" on human rights and democracy, a message Putin has repeatedly delivered during 12 years in power.

Madonna, who is American, donned a balaclava like those worn by Pussy Riot performers during her concert in Moscow on Tuesday night and was cheered loudly when she offered her support.

Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, stormed the altar of Russia's main cathedral on Feb. 21 and sang a "punk prayer" calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin, who was then campaigning to return to the presidency after four years as prime minister.

Prosecutors want a judge to sentence them to three years in prison for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.

They have been in jail since shortly after their performance, which offended many in mostly Orthodox Christian Russia, and Kremlin critics see their trial as part of a crackdown on dissent as Putin starts a new six-year term.

The women have said the performance was meant as criticism of close ties between Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church and the clear if informal support its leader, Patriarch Kirill, gave Putin during his successful election campaign.

Western governments and rights groups have said the govermnent's reaction to the "punk prayer" was excessive and are watching the trial closely. The judge is to give a verdict on Aug. 17.

Rogozin, who some analysts view as a potential presidential candidate in the next election in 2018, did not mention Madonna by name in the English tweet on Friday or a Russian one on Wednesday.

But few Internet users had any doubt that he was referring to Madonna, who also spoke out in support of gay rights at a concert in St. Petersburg, Putin's home town, on Thursday night.

"She spoke about freedom, it is the state bureaucrats who are lecturing us every day on all the state channels," a Twitter user called Alexander Oleinik wrote in response to Rogozin's posting in Russian.

"Either take off the cross or put on your panties," Rogozin replied. His spokeswoman confirmed the messages were genuine.

Rogozin, former leader of the nationalist political party Rodina (Motherland), also wrote ironic messages about Pussy Riot, likening their supporters to a religious sect.

Rogozin was appointed deputy prime minister late last year as part of then prime minister Putin's drive to appeal to moderate nationalists.

He is known for his sharply worded criticism of the West and in particular of U.S. and NATO plans for a European missile shield that Moscow calls a threat to its security.

On Friday, a group of Russian Orthodox hardliners burned Madonna's picture outside Moscow's Christ the Saviour cathedral, where Pussy Riot staged its punk protest.

Madonna urges support for jailed Ukrainian PM

Madonna has urged people to support jailed former Ukrainian leader Yulia Tymoshenko, in a warm up for her show in Kiev.

Madonna urges support for jailed Ukrainian PM

Madonna has urged people to support jailed former Ukrainian leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

The 'Girls Gone Wild' singer engaged with the small crowd who were watching her rehearsals ahead of a show in the country's capital, Kiev, last Saturday (04.08.12), to ask about the former Prime Minister, who was jailed in 2011 for her alleged abuse of office during her time in power from December 2007 to March, 2010.

In a video posted on YouTube, Madonna says: ''I don't even know the actual truth, I've just heard some stories from emails ... Is it true that the woman who was the former president (sic) is in jail here?''

When Tymoshenko's supporters protest her conviction, Madonna tells them: ''If you feel so strongly, how come no one's fighting for her? You might get killed? So, this is what we call freedom? Just curious, thank you for telling me.''

She then told the crowd that they should stand up and fight for her release, saying: ''Are you brave? Do you have courage? Are you willing to fight for what is right?''

Madonna, 53, did not repeat her comments during her actual concert that night, but she has made forays into the political arena recently, supporting jailed Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot at her show last Tuesday (07.08.12). The group face prison time for performing a protest song against President Vladimir Putin.

Officials in St. Petersburg were upset by the singer on Thursday night (09.08.12) as she challenged the city's gay rights legislation during a concert, handing out pink bracelets to 25,000 fans.

Anti-gay Russian activists sue Madonna for $10 million

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - A group of Russian anti-gay activists sued American pop star Madonna for $10 million on Friday, saying she had insulted their feelings when she spoke out for gay rights at a concert in St Petersburg last week.

Performing in black lingerie with the words "No Fear" scrawled on her back, Madonna attacked a city law adopted in March that imposed fines for spreading homosexual "propaganda". She had earlier called the law a "ridiculous atrocity".

Homosexuality, punished with jail terms in the Soviet Union, was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but much of the gay communityremains underground as prejudice runs deep.

"She (Madonna) had been warned with words that she should behave in line with the law and she ignored it. So we will speak in the language of money," said Darya Dedova, one of the 10 activists who filed the lawsuit in a St Petersburg court.

"Of course, it is difficult to measure moral damages and suffering but maybe people who earn money regardless of moral rules will better understand this," Dedova said. She added if they won the case, the money would be sent to orphanages.

"Maybe someone does not see the link but after Madonna's concert maybe some boy becomes gay, some girl becomes lesbian, fewer children are born as a result and this big country cannot defend its borders - for me it causes moral suffering," said Alexei Kolotkov, another of the activists who filed the suit.

The St Petersburg propaganda law is the model for a bill that has been submitted to the national parliament but has not yet faced a vote. Critics say they fear it could be used to clamp down on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, for example by barring gay rights demonstrations.

In Moscow, gay rights suffered a blow when an appeal court upheld a lower court's ruling that found city authorities had acted legally when they rejected applications from activists to hold a gay rights march every year for the next 100 years.

Attempts to hold gay rights rallies in the Russian capital have often ended in arrests and clashes with anti-gay activists.

In May, dozens of people were detained in Moscow after Russian Orthodox activists broke up two gay rights marches, throwing water and shouting prayers.

Let me get this straight. Madonna is causing "moral damage and suffering" because a boy or girl will BECOME gay due to her statements? And because of her statements less breeding will take place and because of her statements Russia will not have enough offspring to grow up and defends its borders??? oooooo-kay nuts Why don't they just wrap that accusation up in a bow and call it "hooliganism"?

Madonna's Statement on Pussy Riot

“I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40 second performance extolling their political opinions. Even if one disagrees with the location or how they chose to express themselves, the sentence is too harsh and in fact is inhumane. I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty. They’ve spent enough time in jail. I call on ALL of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free.”

FN activists protest Madonna in France

The next step of the FN/Le Pen controversy is taking place in Nice, where activists of French far-right "Front National" have been spotted covering up posters advertising tomorrow's Madonna concert with those of their leader Marine Le Pen.

The activists are covering up the Madonna posters to protest against an image of Marine Le Pen with a swastika on her face broadcasted during Madonna's concert in Paris and Tel Aviv, according to local media and the National Front. The video displayed the image of Le Pen, followed by an image of Adolf Hitler, before finally showing Madonna herself with Hitler's moustache.

Elton John: The Power of Madonna

Sir Elton John has praised Madonna for forging the way for other female solo artists in the music industry.

The 65-year-old star recently reignited his feud with Madonna by saying that she looked like a “fairground stripper” and criticising her for being “horrible” to his son’s godmother Lady Gaga.
But Elton told the Radio Times: “Madonna took the industry by the scruff of the neck, made opportunities for other women, like Gaga and Katy Perry.”

However he said that “some (women) aren’t good at handling their own careers”.
He told the magazine: “Dusty Springfield was insecure, like a lot of women singers, including Amy Winehouse.

“It’s tragic – Back to Black will sound as good in 50 years as it does today. She was one of the greatest, but if someone doesn’t want to get well, they won’t.
“Look at Billie Holiday. It’s hard for women in this business. Some aren’t good at handling their own careers. KD Lang could be a much bigger star but I don’t think she wants to be.”

French far right warns Madonna over Nazi slur

France’s far-right National Front party has warned US pop diva Madonna, who performs in Nice on Tuesday night, not to repeat a video montage linking party leader Marine Le Pen to the Nazis as she did during previous concerts.

France’s far-right National Front (FN) party has warned of “consequences” if American pop diva Madonna uses a video montage linking the party’s leader Marine Le Pen to Nazism at a concert in Nice on Tuesday.

Madonna hit headlines in France after the first concert of her “MDNA” tour in Tel Aviv, Israel on May 31, in which a video backdrop briefly showed a picture of Le Pen with a swastika on her forehead.

“If she tries that in France, we’ll see what happens” Marine Le Pen warned at the time.

Madonna used the same montage during her song “Nobody Knows Me” at a concert at the Stade de France in Paris on July 14. Cheers erupted in the audience when Le Pen’s face appeared bearing the Nazi symbol.

The FN lodged a complaint against the singer for defamation.

In Nice, party activists have been busy pasting pictures of their party leader over posters advertising Madonna’s concert.

Lydia Schenardi, head of the FN in the Alpes-Maritimes administrative region said the city, where 18% of voters supported Le Pen in April’s first round of the presidential election, would not tolerate seeing Madonna link the party to Nazism.

“Madonna does not understand French politics and she does not understand the concept of democracy,” she told FRANCE 24. “The FN is a legitimate party and it is an unacceptable slur to link its leader to the Nazis. If she shows this video again tonight, we will certainly lodge another complaint for defamation.”

But Schenardi insisted that there would be no FN demonstration at the concert.

“She does not respect the FN or its leader but we respect people’s right to listen to whatever music they want,” she said. “There will be no incident at tonight’s concert but there will be consequences if she uses this footage.”

The anti-immigration and anti-Europe FN has worked hard in recent years to shake off its image as a racist and anti-Semitic party.

Marine Le Pen, who took over the FN leadership from her father Jean-Marie in 2010, insists that the party’s hardline stance on immigration is based on economics and not racial prejudice.

Her father Jean-Marie, who founded the FN in 1972, has been convicted of racism and inciting racial hatred a number of times.

In 1987 he famously said that the Nazi gas chambers of the Holocaust were “just a detail in the history of World War II”.

The FN is France’s third-largest party, but because the country does not have a system of proportional representation in government, it has only two members of parliament in the 577-seat lower National Assembly, and none at all in the upper Senate.
