Well then crack the fuck up, I really don't give a shit.

I miss the old-school Madonna, PERIOD.

I much prefer her over the assholish, self-important, pretentious little sniveling shit of a Madonna we have now. I love who she was, but I hate who she ultimately grew into.

Then again that level of fame for that many years would probably warp anybody - to have half the world constantly kissing your ass, even when you're being a jerk, and then to have the rest of the world ready to tar and feather you just for existing would do anybody's head in and probably cause a certain type of decay in the personality and the psyche and make them a worse person than they were before.

There was a genuineness, and a sincerity and a light in early Madonna that isn't there now.

I MISS THE OLD-SCHOOL MADONNA. If you have a problem with it don't even bother coming to me about it because I promise you I could care less about you as a human being and your wants, needs and opinions, and mine will remain just the same pretty much no matter what you say or do.

That is it. And that is all.

Maybe it's you that's changed. If anything Madonna is nicer and more likely to show gratitude to her fans than when she first started. At all her concerts now, she gives a speech appreciating her fans. I don't remember her ever doing that in the 80's.

You act like Madonna was a goody too shoes when she first started. She has always had a little bit of cheeky attitude. I enjoy that, but I can see how some people might find it arrogant or bitchy. Go back and watch her 80's interviews. She had an attitude in them. If anything, she's friendly and warmer now.

You seem like such a hostile angry person. Relax. Madonna is just a pop star. You don't really know what she's like.

Pussy Riot campaigners in Russia hoping for Madonna's support

London, August 5 (ANI): Campaigners protesting against the arrest of three feminist pop stars charged for performing a ‘punk prayer’ outside a cathedral, hope that Madonna will publicly express her support for the trio.

Three members of the feminist punk collective Pussy Riot named Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich will be jailed for seven years if found guilty on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.
The women were arrested after going to Moscow’s Christ the Saviour cathedral in February and performing a “punk prayer” critical of the Orthodox church’s support for the president, Vladimir Putin, the Guardian reported.

The plight of the trio has become a cause celebre in the music world, with numerous stars taking a public stance in their support for the group.
Anthony Kiedis, lead singer with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, showed his support by wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the name Pussy Riot at a recent concert in St Petersburg.

Another famous band, Sting, has also issued messages of support for the group.
“Surely the Russian authorities will completely drop these spurious charges and allow the women, these artists, to get back to their lives and to their children,” Sting said.

Although Madonna has not gone as far as her music industry comrades, the group still view the star as an inspiration because of her willingness to upset the Roman Catholic church with her music.

The campaigners are hopeful that when the Queen of pop takes to the stage in Moscow this week, she will take a stronger stance.

Madonna hopes for release of Pussy Riot

Madonna has voiced hope that three feminist Russian rockers on trial for performing a “punk prayer” against Vladimir Putin are released soon.

The pop star told the AP during her concert tour of Russia that she supports freedom of speech and hopes the judge will show leniency.

“I’m against censorship, so I hope that the judge is lenient with them and that they are freed soon,” she said.

Two weeks before Putin’s return to the presidency in March’s election, the three members of the Pussy Riot band high-kicked and danced in Moscow’s main cathedral while singing “Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!”

The three were arrested, and have spent five months in custody on charges of hooliganism. They face seven years in prison if convicted.

International rights groups have called them prisoners of conscience.

Pussy Riot tweets Madonna

A fearless Madonna stood against government repression and for freedom of speech, taking the biggest stance a Pop Icon has taken in theimprisonment of the Russian Female Pop/Rock Band Pussy Riot, even after the U.S. Embassy's warning of a possible attack on her MDNA Tour.

The young girls are facing up to 7 years in Prison for an anti Vladimir Putin performance and had pleaded Madonna to take a stance for their freedom.

Madonna appeal over Pussy Riot

Madonna shows the band's name on her back during her performance

US singer Madonna has appealed for the release of three members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot during a concert in Moscow.

The singer told a crowd at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday night that she was praying for the women's freedom.

She briefly wore a balaclava - in a nod to Pussy Riot's trademark outfits - and had the group's name on her back.

Prosecutors have called for the women, who are accused of inciting religious hatred, to be jailed for three years.

An image from Madonna's concert courtesy of Andrey Komissarov (http://muzopposition.ru)
Madonna donned Pussy Riot's trademark balaclava

The judge is expected to start delivering her verdict on 17 August. Announcing the verdict could take days, correspondents say.

Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, played a song attacking Russian leader Vladimir Putin in front of the altar of Moscow's main cathedral on 21 February.

They said it was a reaction to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, publicly backing Mr Putin in elections.

'Repression'

Addressing cheering fans at the stadium, Madonna said: "I know there are many sides to every story, and I mean no disrespect to the church or the government, but I think that these three girls - Masha, Katya, Nadya - I think that they have done something courageous."

"I know that everyone in this auditorium, if you are here as my fan, feels they have the right to be free," she said.

Other international musicians including Sting and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have also appealed for leniency.

Artist Yoko Ono has spoken out in support of the band.

In a Twitter post, John Lennon's widow said: "Mr Putin you are a wise man & dont need to fight with musicians & their friends."

In a closing statement to the court on Wednesday, Pussy Riot's lead singer, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, said the court was carrying out a Stalin-era "political order for repression".

She said that the authorities had refused to listen to the group, and that it was "not a trial over Pussy Riot but of the entire Russian political system".

The three women have been sitting inside a glass cage at the courtroom.

Last week, Mr Putin, who was re-elected president in March, called for leniency towards the women during a visit to London for the Olympic Games.

There are fears among Russian opposition activists that the trial is part of a crackdown on dissent since Mr Putin's return to the Kremlin, following the biggest anti-government protests in recent Russian history.

Nadezhda TolokonnikovaNadezhda Tolokonnikova has remained defiant in court

Pussy Riot's performance inside Christ the Saviour Cathedral was captured on video.

The women danced and sang a song which parodies a Christian prayer, imploring the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Mr Putin.

Defence lawyer Mark Feygin argued on Tuesday that the case against the women did not stand up because they had been charged with hooliganism under Article 213 of the Russian penal code yet no violence or damage had occurred or been threatened.

Madonna urged to break wall of bigotry deying St Petersburg gig

Russian campaigners have written a letter to Madonna, urging her to stand up for gay rights and freedom of expression during her concert in St Petersburg tomorrow (9 August).

The Alliance of Straights for LGBT Equality group are calling on the Material Girl to ‘break the wall of misunderstanding and intolerance’ when she brings her MDNA tour to Russia’s second largest city.

In a letter sent to the queen of pop, the group thank the star for publicly supporting female punk band Pussy Riot, who are currently on trial over religious hooliganism charges after staging an anti-Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral.

They urged Madonna to do the same for the LGBT community in St Petersburg, where an anti-gay law banning so-called ‘homosexual propaganda’ was passed earlier this year.

‘Today in Russia lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people are being denied [sic] increasingly more of their rights to express themselves, to be themselves and live openly as it befits free people,’ read the letter, which claimed LGBT citizens feel like ‘social outcasts’ in their own country.

The letter asks the singer to make a statement, expressing her support for ‘tolerance and equality’ and show ‘solidarity’ in the fight against ‘the anti-gay laws, the homophobia, the hatred, the discrimination and the violence.’

‘Your voice, the voice of a true freedom of mind and freedom of expression fighter, is very important for us,’ the Alliance wrote.

‘Not only Russian LGBT community will hear you. Millions of people will hear you.

‘Your words will have a real influence on the public opinion and will help to break the wall of misunderstanding and intolerance.

‘Your voice will become the voice of those who are being constrained to keep silence.’

Madonna already vowed in March to speak out against homophobia in Russia and St Petersburg’s anti-gay law.

However, the star risks being arrested if she speaks out for the gay community and the city’s assemblyman Vitaly Milanov, who authored the homophobic bill, has called for her to be prosecuted if she does.

Activists have previously called for Madonna to cancel her Russian leg of the tour over the continued persecution of LGBT people.

Alliance of Straights for LGBT Equality is a Russian non-governmental organization based in St Petersburg.

It was founded in May, 2012 by a group of heterosexual people who support the fight for equal rights for gays, lesbians and transgender people.

Church calls for Madonna ban for backing Pussy Riot

Supporters of Russia’s powerful Orthodox Church called on the authorities Tuesday to ban Madonna’s concerts after the US pop icon called for the release of three members of the Pussy Riot protest band.

Madonna stepped into the controversy surrounding the three young women by saying on her arrival in Moscow that she hoped the band members would not have to serve more jail time for denouncing President Vladimir Putin in a church.

“I am against censorship and my whole career I always promoted freedom of expression, freedom of speech, so obviously I think what’s happening to them is unfair and I hope that they do not… I hope they do not have to serve seven years in jail,” Madonna told Western journalists in comments picked up by Russian media.

“That would be a tragedy,” the US superstar said.

The political protest band performed a “punk prayer” in Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February denouncing the Church’s open backing for Putin and calling for the Russian strongman’s ouster from power.

They have been held in pre-trial detention for five months and face up to three years in jail each if convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.

A spokesman for Russia’s Union of Orthodox Banner-Bearers — a support group for the Church that often wages fierce political campaigns –accused Madonna of interfering in Russia’s internal affairs and putting pressure on the courts.

“It is not in our power to ban her, but we call on the authorities – who position themselves as Orthodox believers – to do so,” the spokesman was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

“This little singer is openly mocking our laws, our traditions and our culture,” he said.

Madonna is scheduled to perform later Tuesday in Moscow before doing another show in Saint Petersburg.

Madonna concert in Russia threatened, U.S. Embassy responds

Madonna has made a career out of pushing buttons and poking at hornets’ nests, but her latest piece of controversy goes far beyondflashing her naughty bits, mucking with Nazi imagery, or deflecting catty barbs from Elton John.

In the wake of Madonna’s support for i...Pussy Riot(who are currently on trial for staging a protest and criticizing Vladimir Putin), the U.S. Embassy in Russia has encouraged fans attending Thursday’s show in St. Petersberg to be extra vigilant and alert following credible threats of violence.

In a statement posted on the...s website, the organization noted, “The U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg has received information regarding a threat of physical violence against spectators and performers at the St. Petersburg concert on Aug. 9 … Russian authorities have indicated to the Embassy that they are taking appropriate measures in light of this information. While we expect that enhanced security measures will be put in place at both concerts, U.S. citizens are reminded to remain vigilant regarding their personal security, and to be aware of their surroundings at all times, especially in crowded areas.”

Last night’s show in Moscow went off without incident. During a break in the action, Madonna paused to talk about the imprisoned band. “I mean no disrespect to the church or the government,” the singer said. “But I think that these three girls — Masha, Katya, Nadya — have done something courageous, have paid the price for their act, and I pray for their freedom.”

Wow. Things are really fucked up in Russian when someone can be imprisoned for expressing an opinion. Good for Madonna for having the nerve to say something about it.

Madonna's concert venue in St. Petersburg to be sprayed with holy water

Activists from the Trade Union of Russian Citizens are planning to continue a series of lone protests against Madonna’s concert in St. Petersburg, the public movement told Interfax.

“At first we were planning to hold protests outside the Sports and Concert Complex (where her performance will take place), but we dropped this idea because representatives from the LGBT movement will be protesting there. We have decided to go to Dvortsovaya Square tonight,” the source said.

It was here that Madonna gave her first performance in St. Petersburg a few years ago, he said. “The time has come to consecrate this place. We have invited a priest to spray holy water onto Dvortsovaya Square,” the source said.

The Trade Union of Russian Citizens believes that Madonna has turned its ideas into political demonstrations, having become “an ideological weapon of the West,” the source said. “We are against the genocide of morality and ethics. Foreigners have no right to dictate the rules of life to us,” the spokesman said.

Madonna is performing in St. Petersburg on Thursday. The show is due to begin on the stage of the Petersburgsky Sports and Concert Complex at 2000 Moscow time. Madonna will sing songs from her new album M.D.N.A. as part of her world tour.

During her performance in Moscow on August 7, Madonna spoke in support of the arrested members of the Pussy Riot punk band. Also, the singer wrote on her Facebook page that during her performance in St. Petersburg she will touch upon the problem of gay rights violations in the city, which banned “propaganda” promoting homosexuality and pedophilia to minors.

Activists from St. Petersburg-based public movements Narodny Sbor and the Trade Union of Russian Citizens held protests against Madonna’s concert on the eve of her performance. The U.S. Consulate General warned citizens of a possible physical threat at the pop star’s concert. Diplomats urged concert goers to be mindful of their personal safety. Security at the concert will be provided by 350 police officers.

Madonna's pink ribbon concert

US pop icon Madonna drew the wrath of Russian ministers and the mighty Church again Thursday as she took her gay rights activism to a city that has just banned “homosexual propaganda”.

The gay community icon stripped to her bra on stage to reveal the words “No Fear!” written on her back as she preached the dangers of societies that fail to treat their own people with “dignity, with respect and with love”.

“Show your love and appreciation for the gay community,” she called as a sea of hands shot up to display pink bracelets that her team had distributed to the 10,000-strong crowd.

Madonna supports gay rights in Russia

Pop star Madonna spoke out for gay rights at a concert on Thursday in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s home town, where activists say a law adopted this year to curb homosexual “propaganda” is discriminatory.

Performing in black lingerie with the words “No Fear” scrawled on her bare back, Madonna urged the audience – most wearing pink wrist bands distributed at the door – to “show your love and appreciation to the gay community”.

“We want to fight for the right to be free,” she said.

The American singer has turned a two-concert tour into a platform for comment on Putin’s Russia.

In Moscow on Tuesday, she told a crowd she prays for the release of three members of the band Pussy Riot, who prosecutors want jailed for three years for their “punk prayer” criticizing Putin on the altar of Russia’s main cathedral.

She told Reuters Television that the three women, whose trial verdict is to be announced on August 17, had been treated unfairly and suggested they were victims of censorship.

Madonna had promised to use her St Petersburg show to speak out against legislation adopted by the city in March that imposes fines for spreading homosexual “propaganda” that could “damage the health, moral and spiritual development” of minors.

On her Facebook page, she called the law a “ridiculous atrocity”.

Critics of the law – the model for a bill submitted to the national parliament – say they fear it could be used to clamp down on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, for instance by barring gay rights demonstrations.

St. Petersburg police chief Sergei Umnov told local reporters in July that 74 people had been fined so far.

Homosexuality, punished with jail terms in the Soviet Union, was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but much of the homosexual community remains largely underground as anti-gay prejudice runs deep.

Numerous attempts to hold gay protests in Moscow, ruled illegal by the authorities, have ended in arrests and clashes with violent Russian Orthodox believers who say homosexuals should be punished or treated for “illness”.

“Do we live in fear?” Madonna asked her audience on Thursday night. “No!” came the reply. “We love you!” shouted some fans, but not everybody was thrilled.

“One should not mix showbusiness with human rights activism,” said gay rights activist Yuri Gavrikov, who picketed the concert venue. “If she wanted to support the LGBT community, she could have … refused to hold concerts in Russia.”

Madonna's Pink Ribbon concert draws Russian wrath

From the AFP:

Madonna drew the wrath of Russian ministers and the mighty Church again Thursday as she took her gay rights activism to a city that has just banned "homosexual propaganda".

The gay community icon stripped to her bra on stage to reveal the words "No Fear!" written on her back as she preached the dangers of societies that fail to treat their own people with "dignity, with respect and with love".

"Show your love and appreciation for the gay community," she called as a sea of hands shot up to display pink bracelets that her team had distributed to the 10,000-strong crowd.

The pop legend's show in strongman leader Vladimir Putin's native Saint Petersburg came two days after she donned a balaclava on a Moscow stage in solidarity with the jailed all-girl protest punk band Pussy Riot.

Madonna had stripped to a black bra in Moscow on Tuesday to reveal the words "Pussy Riot" on her back.

Prosecutors have sought three years in a corrective labour facility for the band on charges of hooliganism for their church performance of an anti-Putin "punk prayer". The verdict will be handed down August 17.

On Thursday, Madonna's lightning-rod antics and outspoken reputation again created a combustible mix, in a city that this year passed controversial anti-gay legislation that some Putin allies hope to apply nationwide.

The US embassy in Moscow warned this week that its Saint Petersburg consulate had "received information regarding a threat of physical violence against spectators and performers". The governor deployed 300 police to the Saint Petersburg Sport and Concert Complex as priests vowed to burn pictures of the US pop star and sprinkle holy water on sites she visited on her last stop in the city in 2009.

The war of words between Madonna and her hosts was in full swing hours before the concert's scheduled, and inevitably delayed, late evening start.

Russia's deputy prime minister and former NATO envoy Dmitry Rogozin used an epithet he declined to spell out in an angry tweet about Madonna's moral values. "Either take off your cross, or put on your knickers," Rogozin wrote.

A local lawmaker meanwhile said Madonna's show would be closely monitored for signs of violating the new ban on propaganda of deviant behaviour.
"We should not allow the imposition here in Russia of Western values that Madonna promotes," said a spokeswoman for lawmaker Vitaly Milonov.

Saint Petersburg this year passed a loosely-worded law that fines those "promoting homosexuality" to minors and apparently equates it with paedophilia.
Russia legalised homosexuality in 1993 after the fall of the Soviet Union but only ceased to classify it as a mental disorder in 1999.
Homophobic attitudes run high across the country and are promoted by some of Russia's most popular and powerful politicians today.

The Russian Orthodox Church for its part has seen its ranks swell during Putin's 12 years in power as the state seeks a reliable national base of support.
"She calls herself 'Madonna' and desecrates the cross," said religious activist Kirill Frolov of the Corporation of Orthodox Action.
"We will not tolerate this," he said.

Saint Petersburg banned what would have been Russia's first authorised gay pride rally last month after a deluge of complaints from residents.
Gay activists earlier called on the superstar to cancel her Russia concerts as a gesture of support for the gay community. Several held solitary pickets Thursday to show their displeasure at Madonna's decision to show up.

Official wants Madonna prosecuted

Madonna should be prosecuted for violating a Russian ban on public statements supporting homosexuality, an official in the city of St Petersburg says.

The US pop star wilfully violated city codes on “gay propaganda” when she took to the stage in the Baltic Sea port late Thursday, city council official Vitaly Milonov was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying.

Madonna and the concert organisers should be fined for her “illegal” statements at an event attended by people as young as 12, he said on Friday.

Witnesses were available to testify against the singer, Milonov added.

The St Petersburg city government would not permit “our society to be fed sewer water from the hellish kitchen of the evil empire,” he said.

Madonna stripped down to her bra during the performance to reveal the words “No Fear” painted on her back.

She told her 25,000-strong audience she would speak out insupport of homosexuality and other alternative lifestyles, even if laws banned such statements.

“Show your love and appreciation for the gay community! Are you with me?” Madonna said.

“All people should be treated with dignity, respect and love.”

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who has frequently criticised Western social influences on Russian society, commenting on Twitter said: “What a has-been… in her old age she tries to lecture every one about morals. Especially when she is touring abroad.”

In a performance in Moscow on Tuesday, Madonna called on authorities to release the three members of local punk band Pussy Riot who were put on trial after performing songs in a cathedral that were deemed to have been insulting to President Vladimir Putin.
