Maxwell cancels Summer concerts due to vocal damage

First John Mayer was forced to lay off touring to protect his voice, then the same thing happened to Adele. Now R&B singer Maxwell, who was getting set to commence a six-date run called the "MaxwellTwoNight" tour, has announced that he must cancel it, including both stops at the Staples Center on July 20-21. His doctors have advised that he take a complete vocal rest after developing vocal cord edema and a vocal cord hemorrhage.

The singer wrote in a statement that he had no choice but to cancel. "I know this sucks but after many months of recording I've temporarily damaged my voice. I've had issues before during other tours, but was able to power through. I've been strongly advised to rest and undergo treatment. I look forward to hopefully seeing you next on our full fledged tour, when the sequel to the "Blacksummer's Night" trilogy is released. My deepest apologies to those who made the effort to try and see the show. Love and Thanks, M."

In addition to the dates at Staples Center, Maxwell is canceling two dates in Atlanta (July 27-28) and two dates in Newark, N.J., on Aug. 3-4.

To me, Maxwell ain't no Prince, but he is very talented and I quite like many of his songs. My friend thinks Prince ain't no Maxwell. Different strokes for different folks. I hope his operation is a success...it isn't always successful--ask Julie Andrews. neutral

I have nothing against Maxwell.. I've said it here before that he has the best voice out of his generation.

I guess I am the only one who isn't buying this...

He is known to cancel dates and I didn't think ticket sales would be high for this outing.

Of course I am just speculating, but I think one of the other explanations is in play.

Good thing he's resting and getting the attention that's needed.

His voice has changed. It seems harder for him to hit falsetto notes and his tone/timbre (?) seems scratchier than when he first started. I mean, you could hear some of the scratchiness on Now but it doesn't seem like it's for effect, nowadays. Like his voice is raspy, full stop.

Either way, I'm very excited for the new album. Bring it on!

Funk

I had tickets for both nights at Staples....but I did think these shows were odd....Staples is such a huge venue to fill 2 nights....and I wondered how many people were really going to want to spend some $ on hearing all his albums performed in their entirety. Especially when he has a new album coming out soon....if he were an older artist not putting out new music I could see performing his albums....but in a smaller venue.

In my opinion I think this mini tour was cancelled due to low ticket sales.

Maxwell is not Prince. He can not sell out 2 nights @ the Staples center with no current hit record...rolleyes

Perhaps he should have just played a smaller venue.Even some of the young "hot" artists wouldn't be able to sellout the Staples Center.
