HDD: John Mayer to debut big next week

May 23, 2012

Columbia Records social media maven and swoon-worthy rock star John Mayer will easily debut at #1 on next week’s chart with his new, critically acclaimed Born and Raised album.

Based on one-day sales from those retailers who haven’t packed it up for the Memorial Day weekend show that the release will sell between 225-250k in first-week sales. It’s his first new studio effort since Battle Studies, which moved 286k units back in Nov. 2009. The new disc is being praised for its winning throwback to the vintage Laurel Canyon sound of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Veteran Dove Award-winning Fair Trade/Columbia Christian act MercyMe’s The Hurt & the Healer should debut with 35-45k in sales.

Dik Hayd/EMI Label Services rock guitar god Slash’s Apocalyptic Love is aiming for sales of 30-35k after his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N’ Roses.

Epic songstress Sara Bareilles’ five-song EP, Once Upon Another Time, is looking at a similar total of 30-35k for a release that has been in iTunes’ Top 10 this week.

Warner Bros. New Zealand performer Kimbra, now known for her vocals in Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” is looking at 20-25k for her label debut, Vows, already Top 5 in Australia and her native country.

19/Interscope Idol contestant Haley Reinhart emerges with her well-received debut, Listen Up!, which is on target for 15-20k.

Eighth season Idol winner Kris Allen’s 19/RCA sophomore album, Thank You Camellia, is looking at 15-20k as well after his debut scored 80k out of the box in Nov. ‘09. It’s interesting to note, the contestant he defeated, Adam Lambert, entered at #1 last week with his second album, Trespassing, generating sales of 77k.

Album sales were down 9% vs. last week, down 6% vs. same week last year and down 1.5% year to date.

Track sales were flat vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and up 7% year to date.

TEA sales were down 6% vs. last week, down 3% vs. same week last year and up 1% year to date.

I see another 60K or at least 80K for Adele. Sometimes she has sales spikes. Carrie's always steady.

Actually considering that John isnt pushing the record, he cant tour, no videos pretty much, to sell 200K in this climate is pretty much a testament to the artist, not a big John Mayer fan, here and there i like his stuff, im more into Ryan Adams and Norah Jones but props to him. It will be interesting how this album sticks around because John really cant do any form of promo, maybe some tv, but tours are out and this might be his last record for quite some time due to health issues.

Kris Allen, as they say, "they only know him in his living room" but lets be real Adam Lambert sold almost nothing for that number one record, i think the laugh might be on him, its a double edge sword with that number one record, and it will most likely drop like a stone, but its the same as that "Jay leno" looking guy that beat Katherine Mcphee, she sold 480,000 of her first album and about 200,000 of her "indie" album and now is on a mega hit show, and has a new album deal because of it, while that "guy" cant remember his name, is cutting the lawn at Katharine's new house. Should american really be allowed to vote on anything at this point? I mean Mitt Romney is ahead in polls, nuff said.

To me, in relation to the hype and hysteria that Idol creates, NONE of the contestants are shown much love.

You look at all the frantic voting and constant cheerleading week after week and you think, music lovers don't watch this show, television viewers(duh) do.

I know someone who insists on telling me about this or that contestant when I don't want to hear it and she has NEVER bought her favorites album when it dropped.

Honestly i hear that alot too, i never really got the show, and what its purpose was, it was this huge think out the box but to me now it seems like, who cares, sure there is talented singers here and there etc...but these kind of shows really are meaningless at this point outside of "the talk" they generate, no one is really making an artist, i mean there are a handful that i honestly say that are good enough to be intersting, but i dont get the point of these shows anymore. I mean the "voice" seems more like a vehicle for the hosts then the contestants? it showcases Christina and CeeLoo and the Maroon 5 guy more.

We've known since the summer of 03 that you didn't necessarily have to win the contest (American Idol) to succeed. Aiken proved it by out-doing the actual winner, Ruben Studdard. People don't remember but before Kelly smashed with Breakaway Clay was literally the most successful Idol. His debut even out-sold Clarkson's first record.

But Aiken and Studdard are non-entities now.

Daltry? *sigh*

Fantasia and Lambert have powerhouse vocals but the verdict is still out.

Clarkson is and should be (she was the first) the most consistent Idol, but her sales are still inconsistent and her material plows familiar territory (Relationships, relationships, relationships and relationships).

At this point, Carrie's been the most consistent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...lbum_sales

She's the only one with three multi-platinum records under her belt and she could be adding a fourth.

Kelly's success should never be overlooked but all three of her last CDs have failed to reach 1 million in sales.

When I think of Carrie (very little) I think country music ghetto.

Good to hear John is doing well, his new cd is better than his last effort. It's no Continuum, but it's pretty good.

Verdict deliverd on Fantasia. It's ovah. Boat cruises and Vegas casino's for her. I can't stand her screaming. Ms. Labelle can scream well, why cant Fantasia?

I hope Daltry will come back with a good CD. Like the man's voice.

One thing I noticed about Idol winners is the majority of them don't succeed and if they see success at first they aren't able to substain it. Really interesting IMO. I can only think of one that is relevant and that's Kelly, while Carrie didn't win the show (at least going off my memory). Personally I think Fantasia's career is over, so...

As far as John Mayer, I heard the first single and I actually like it. Maybe I'll youtube the album sometime this week.

I loved Continuum. Didnt really feel Battle.. at all...I remember listening to the whole thing and nothing clicked with me at all like Gravity or Waiting On The World To Change.

Hope this is better.

I liked Battle on first listen, but forgot about it pretty quick. " born and raised" sounds more mature to me. And you gotta love a song like this... love

Always thought he was a douchey guy, and he emphasized that with his bull.... two years ago. But I can appreciate that he eventually saw through his own bull... and brings what seems like genuine sorrow in place of an empty-I take-full-responsibility-apology upon his return. Maybe he will elaborate further in the coming year on his, lets be generous here, missteps. And maybe then I'll make him my Beyonce.

Jump on the Google machine and find out - you can get a much broader take by researhcing it yourself. But before these shit interviews he always seemed arrogant and big headed to me. I do think he is fine as hell, and sometimes people who hear about being fine as hell all day long get misguided in their own estimation of self worth. But truthfully, he might ought to come harder with some apologies.

At the very least he is being honest. I'm not defending him by any means.
