Record Store Day 2012: Our Comprehensive Guide to Steals and Deals, Free Grub and Live Performances

Categories: Dusty Fingers
Record Store Day is this Saturday. Because there are almost as many record stores in L.A. as there are donut shops, we compiled a handy guide to help you get your hot little hands on as much vinyl as possible.

We called every record store in a 40-mile radius and made a list of all the day's deals and live performances -- one store will have free food, another will have a cool "vinyl valet," and a couple are opening at the crack of dawn.

1. Freakbeat Records, Sherman Oaks:
-Will be carrying new RSD releases
-10% discount on all merchandise
-99 cent room full of great finds

2. Atomic Records, Burbank:
-Will not have any new RSD releases
-10% discount on all merchandise
-Will be giving away tee shirts to a few lucky costumers

3. Backside Records, Burbank:
-Will have exclusive RSD titles
-Bring cash and receive 15% off new vinyls and 30% off used vinyls
-Giveaways (movie posters, CDs, etc.)
-DJ spinning vinyl all day long
-Free food (coffee and donuts for early morning costumers and BBQ for the afternoon/evening costumers)
-Private area full of $1 used vinyls will be open on Saturday, the 21st

4. SoundCheck, Hollywood:
-Will have limited edition items and RSD releases
-Buy two shirts, get one shirt 50% off
-Acoustic performances and signings by Hands like Houses and Secrets

5. Headline Records, Los Angeles:
-Will not have any new RSD releases
-Vinyls will be 20% off
-Promotional items like Headline bags, buttons and shirts will be given to costumers

6. Fat Beats, Los Angeles: Los Angeles location is now CLOSED. You can only shop online.

7. Amoeba, Hollywood:
-Will have hundreds of new RSD releases
-12 p.m. Silkscreening of exclusive RSD Amoeba design (while t-shirts last) with $5 donation to The Silverlake Conservatory of Music
-1-4 p.m. Prize wheel with $1 donation to The Silverlake Conservatory of Music

Gues DJ sets:
-1 p.m. Brendan Canning
-3 p.m. †††
-5 p.m. Macy Gray (who will also sign copies of her new album after her DJ set)
-6-8 p.m. The David Lynch Foundation and Amoeba Music celebrate Music That Changes The World with a RSD party at Space15Twenty (located one block from Amoeba),

8. High-Fidelity, Los Feliz:
-Open 10 a.m. to Midnight on RSD
-Will carry a limited amount of RSD releases
-Live music from local bands start to finish
-Rewards program and 5% of your purchase will go toward your next purchase

9. Rockaway Records, Los Angeles:
-Will have new RSD releases
-Semi-annual store-wide sale kicks off; save up to 50% off

10. VACATION, Los Angeles:

Record Store Day is actually happening in other countries of the world too, though you wouldn't think it with this thread.

Full international search can be conducted here http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

There are a few discs that I am after, but like last year i'll be happy to pick up the Bat For Lashes 7inch and the Kate Bush platters.

I was lucky last year and picked up two copies of the pink vinyl Kate Bush 10inch, I sold one on ebay for almost 15 times the amount I paid for it, people were going nuts over them.

That's a good thing about ebay, if there are any records you can't find on the day, just wait a few days and they will more than likely end up on ebay. There were literally hundreds of them last year, and some fantastic bargains too.

I will definitely be going! There are a couple smallish record stores in the DC area that participate, but I wish we had some better options. Ah well.

Unfortunately i'm underwhelmed by the list this year. The best items are the 4 color vinyl reissues from The Cure but they are UK only...grrrrrr....

I got everything.... boxed

Well no... I'm looking for the 45' RPM instrumental version of The Sylvers - "Stay Awaw From Me". I owned it for damn near 30 years and it's disappeared. hmm I"m looking for the Sylvers IV album they did with their mother for Pride. Oh, I'm kinda looking for Billy Idol's Cyberpunk on floppy... my chances are slim. Well damn, I've went from not looking for anything to a list. lol It's your fault. lol

My haul for this year's RSD

(on pink vinyl)

(On pink vinyl)

And from left field...

Despite joining the queue waaay after it satrted (apparently some cats were waiting from midnight, and there was already a line right around the block at 7am), I managed to get nearly everything I wanted. The Bowie and T-Rex singles were gone, but this was a good result.

So, what did y'all blow your cas... errrr 'invest' in today?

It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

I just bought a couple from egay as the capital city of Scotland has a pathetic indie record shop count.

As I thought though, there is a plethora of Kate Bush 10inchers on fleabay for stupid amounts of cash, so i'll wait till the dust settles and grab one then.

@ ReddishBrownOne. That Velvets pink vinyl looks like a tasty wee product, wink well done.

I picked up:

Genesis "Spot the Pigeon" EP on blue vinyl

Judee Sill

Paul Simon "Graceland" reissue

David Bowie "Starman" tin with the Mick Ronson photo book

The Cure "Entreat" live album

and a couple that I don't think were RSD releases:

Jesus and Mary Chain "Psychocandy" reissue

Suicide reissue

I really wanted the "Pretty in Pink" soundtrack but I didn't get up early enough apparently, by the time I got to the first store pretty much everything was gone.
