Even if you are a musician, there is some really clever sampling out there. And i think Kanye & The Neptunes are some of the best at doing that.

Now there is some sampling where it's like confused for example when Flo Rida sampled John Lennons Imagine for Club Can't Handle me

Or Ja Rule sampling Stevie on Livin It Up

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

I agree with this.'Clever' is the word I always use for Kanye's 'productions'. He's not a dull or unimaginative sampler like a lot of hip hop 'producers' are, but based on what I've learned in this thread he is definitely a serial sampler. Lol. I'd be lying though if I said that he didn't lose a point or two with me though now that I see how far overboard he's gone with it..jeez. I still like him lyrically though.

Good music makes me happy.

Let's be real here-- anybody on here who claims they could name every one of those songs is lying their ass off. I can respect that he has enough musical knowledge to sample an array of songs that would otherwise have never been listened to by 98% of today's generation.

Just saying...

But that makes him have a good ear.

But when people start throwing around terms like genius and brilliant...

I'll give him a certain level of creativity that can't be denied.

That is impossible.

Actually it isn't impossible. I bet there is a song that you probably love a lot and don't even realize that there is a sample being used. Music has evolved, sampling is not the end all be all, but until you are able to do it as well as the best you shouldn't dismiss it as not being creative. Everyone is a blogger, everyone is a critic, everyone is an armchair quarterback. Hooray....

Just because I didn't know it was a sample doesn't mean the guy that sampled it "owns it" or "made it his own". He didn't. He took what someone else created and modified it - sure, I get that.

But he didn't "make" anything. He just modified it.

Hip-Hop Albums of the year, Hip-Hop singles of the years, producer of the year I'm guessing.

Also Grammy's featured on other artist tracks.

Way to be high and mighty. I'm actually a muscian also. I think the difference here is I embrace technology. Again, sampling is not as easy as it sounds if done in a clever way.

Interesting.

I love technology in most of it's forms but it is beyond ridiculas 2 say that sampling another person's work is as difficult as creating something original.

How is that rediculous? Have you ever tried to sample before? Better yet have you ever sampled something and the end result sounded nothing like the original sample? So do you think that when someone covers a song and makes it their own that it was easy because it was a cover? Listen to Me'Shell N'degeocello's version of Love you Down as an easy reference and then answer that last question.

Nice response. I don't mind a friendly debate bro. It all really comes down to a difference of opinions. I would like to hear your thoughts on cover songs though.

I don't have a problem with sampling or cover songs but 2 say that is it as difficult as creating something original is just plain silly.

There have been some great cover songs over the years, House is not a Home, Strawberry Letter 23, I feel 4 U........and others. it has it's place.

Again, you still have yet to answer how that is just plain "silly". I'll take one of the covers you used for example (I feel for you), you don't think that was an original take on something that someone else created or do you think it was pretty easy because well they didn't create it?

Also, I'm not calling your opinion silly dude, I'm just debating.

Check, your move.
