I know some people are crazy about how sampling is ''stealing'' from others music.

But give some peopel credit they do it well, & i think kanye is one of the best at taking a sample and making it work great in his song.

This is one of my fav BTS with him

Neptunes are great too, but not known for slowing down soul samples like the others.

Actually if done right it's just as hard. Everyone samples bro (even ol boy Prince). The trick is to take a sample and and make it your own. Kanye does this very well. For the people who thinks all he does is speed up or slow down records and then puts drums around it obviously doesn't listen to much of his music. I started to gain respect for the man when he elisted Jon Brion (sp) for his second record, started using vintage analog synths on his third record, brought back the 808's, and then went balls out on dark fantasy. His personality may rub people the wrong way (reminds me of someone else huh?), but you can't deny the mans talent or the fact that he keeps growing as an artist. Much respect.

Good points. Not a Kanye fan myself but I can´t deny his talent. What you said above is something that Prince could learn from. Not that he really NEEDS a producer but maybe someone who listens to his stuff before release and gives him his opinion? Like, for instance, Questlove Thompson or D´Angelo....not really better musicians than Prince but definitely people who know and understand Prince´s body of work and who know what made his 80s sound so good.

When Prince tries to recreate his old sound he never seems to get it right these days.

Interestingly, he sure as hell knows how to tweak and update other people´s songs and make them sound good but doesn´t really seem to have a neutral ear as far as his own music is concerned. Then again, some versions of his revisited songs, like Little Red Corvette, are really great.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Musicslave

Did he and DJ Toomp have to get permission from Warner Bros. and Prince to sample "It's Gonna Be Lonely" for Kanye's "Big Brother"? Or is Prince not a factor when it comes to sampling his back catalog? Could somebody refresh my memory please...

I like Kanye too. He seems to be able to rap about anything. He's not in a box like so many other rap artists, BUT, c'mon people, SAMPLING is not creating.

Just think of all the classic albums that didn't have a bit of sampling on them:

Purple Rain

Thriller

Sign O' The Times

Dark Side of the Moon

The White Album

Surely it was much more difficult to come up with original melodies, harmonies, lyrics and production decisions then manipulating a song that has ALREADY been recorded...

LOL a random sampling. And by no means in order of significance.

Until Kanye approaches this level of creativity I hesitate to call him a genius. Or am I old-fashioned?

Actually it isn't impossible. I bet there is a song that you probably love a lot and don't even realize that there is a sample being used. Music has evolved, sampling is not the end all be all, but until you are able to do it as well as the best you shouldn't dismiss it as not being creative. Everyone is a blogger, everyone is a critic, everyone is an armchair quarterback. Hooray....

What's that Beyonce quote about sampling? Something like "it's a whole bunch of music already made, so why not use that instead of making your own" or some dumb shit.

That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Almost as bad as vanilla ice saying he didn't sample Queen's Under Pressure because he added an extra note....
