I liked scott weillands vocals better than curt cobain and I also felt STP's music was broader and had more crossover appeal than Nirvana. You had to really be into to grunge with Nirvana as that type of music didn't fit into any other category. STP was grunge, rock, classic rock and had pop flavor to them also.

I think STP had cross over appeal, cause they were really watered down grunge

Alice in Chains

After them:

STP

Nirvana

Pearl Jam

In that order.

Depends on the lead vocalist for me. Nirvana had better songs but AIC had the full package as far as that whole scene. In fact, so did Soundgarden. But I guess Alice/Soundgarden had more of a metal influence in theirs while Nirvana, STP and Pearl Jam were anti-metal for the most part (Nirvana had punk influences while STP and Pearl Jam were basically alternative rock).

Scott Weiland seemed to be the most energetic frontman in comparison to Kurt Cobain but Eddie Vedder would've given him a run during their heydays because he was always flying into the audiences like he was Tarzan. Helped he had long hair. lol

Eddie never left Pearl Jam, he's just doing solo work.

I heard STP "Plush" on the radio for the first time in forever yesterday and it still sounds amazing. They were never better than that song so I'd still rate them Nirvana, Pearl Jam and STP. I like all of them.

Seriously, what are the good US bands now??? Anyone? Foo Fighters are inferior to all the above (and I LOVED the first Foos record) NOBODY is selling. It's either pop sluts or country pop. It's SO open for a f**kin' good band to come along.

Rock is in trouble i remember last year Linkin Park was the best selling rock group but only at like 61 confused rock has jut been taken over by pop & hip hop.

I never was a huge Nirvana fan though I respect their contribution to Grunge. I actually prefer Alice in Chains to me they were better than all three.

Here's my list

STP (Scott and Lainne sound eerily alike)
Pearl Jam
Nirvana

1.Pearl Jam (great, and long career)

2.Nirvana (great, but wacko leader with a crappy voice, and short career)

drop off

3.Soundgarden (great sound/voice, but too much filler)

4.Alice in Chains (too depressing)

bigger drop off

5.Stone Temple Pilots (I enjoy The hits album and that's about it)

Nirvana

the rest are watered down pop bands. Decent songs and decent music. But the energy, the daring, and the creativity of Nirvana was something the others never approached.

A title like Smells Like Teen Spirit just has Kurt's personality stamped all over it. It sounds like a simple rock song, but its lyrics are just plain bizarre and surreal. The fact that it's been covered by Tori Amos, Paul Anka, and Mary J Blige really says something about the universal appeal of the melody.

And that is just their most famous song. The whole of Nevermind is perfect, IMO. Not a single weak song. And it has as much energy as any album I've ever heard.

Of course Nirvana's legacy is tainted by the how brief it is, but I don't see STP or Pearl Jam having contributed anything significant to music other than some decent songs. Nirvana made you think, and did it with style

For my money, "Interstate Love Song" is the very best grunge has to offer. As far as breakthrough hits go, I'll take "Plush" over "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Jeremy" all day every day. STP's first 3 albums are consistently good IMO. I dig a lot of Nirvana, but I've never been a big fan of Pearl Jam, mainly because I'm not big on Vedder's voice.
