Africa vs. Human Nature I hope this isn't breaking any rules.
Which one do you prefer?
Melody wise, songwriting, musically, vocally, etc, which do you find better?
I'll sit out for the first little bit...I want to see how this goes.

I think Africa is a way better song, i love the lyrics and melody to it. Not to mention i'm a huge sucker for great politcal/social songs and Africa is a classic of it's time.
Human Nature is a pretty ballad but it doesn't give me that spice the Africa melody gives me Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I really like them both, but I, definitely, prefer the vocals on Human Nature by a mile.

Didn't one of the guys from Toto write Human Nature?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
ok thanks
I never liked that song , or the band for that matter
I find the song corny and their music doesn't convey any emotion to me whatsoever , frankly I love Human Nature [Edited 2/29/12 8:28am]

Yep, hence the thread.
Steve Porcaro wrote it, this is his demo of it:
A good chunk of the instrumentation on the Thriller album was performed by Toto bandmembers like Steve, David Paich, and Steve Lukather. |

How come Toto kind of feel off after Africa though?, They had a huge hit with Toto IV even won album of the year... then of course Steve & David helped with the songs on Thriller.
After that they knd of flopped and could barely get a top 40 hit.

Well, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band, and "Isolation", the follow up to TOTO IV was the first (and only) album they did with Fergie Fredrickson fronting the band. So perhaps the public didn't take to him as a singer/frontman. After Fergie was let go they did two albums with Joseph Williams as the frontman, the second of which was moderately successful.
So perhaps it's that the subsequent lineups never worked quite as well. Bobby Kimball did come back for a while circa '97, but at that point I think the band was past the point of being able to crack the Top 40.
Funnily enough they reformed again last year and Joseph Williams is back as the frontman for the first time since 1989. And Steve Porcaro is back on synths for the first time since '86. |

Huh? | |

Well, I mean that Africa is losing, although I think it is obviously much stronger song than HN.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh...I thought more people preferred Africa, but I didn't count.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I count it instead of you ...
although in general I prefer MJ, there are only a few songs in his collection (3 or maybe 4), which is stronger than Africa, but HN definitely not one of them [Edited 3/1/12 14:47pm]

I dunno, but I think everything MJ should be strictly relegated and corralled in that sticky ghetto up above. Never should anything MJ related be allowed to leave or contaminate anything away from the quarantined sticky.
