I think Tammi's fate was sealed due to her Unsung documentary. It seemed that problems with her brain had occurred earlier than expected and was made much worse by the abuse she received from James Brown and David Ruffin.

Phyllis and Whitney seem to me to be kinda similar: both were statesque, both had golden pipes, both did modeling on the side, they acted (Phyllis on Broadway and Whitney in the movies), they both had affilations with Clive Davis and Arista, and both died before reaching 50. Only difference, of course, was Phyllis was a broken woman and couldn't take life anymore.

I'm still mad about Aaliyah and Left Eye... and still sad that Minnie Riperton is not alive to see how great her daughter is doing at the present moment. I saw a picture of Maya Rudolph imitating her mother's Perfect Angel cover, overalls and melting ice cream at all and I smiled, going "somewhere, Minnie is smiling at her daughter right now".

That fool was hitting her with everything he could find. I see why Marvin said he kept his distance from him.

Yeah they dated when she was still 17. James used to wine and dine her but when he felt she was not being appreciative or even speculated that Tammi was going behind his back, he reacted by physical force. You didn't watch her Unsung? Gene Chandler basically had to call her family to get her out of James' web.

Maybe it was just me but when I watched her Unsung, it appeared that either her family was completely clueless or just didn't care about her well being at all. When she was raped, I was just eek when it was talked about as if it was something that just "happened" and she tried her best to move on. Did her family not go to the police? Did they seek any type of justice for her at all? I just disbelief

I don't know, but I'm guessing maybe that was just the M.O. for the times back then? It seems there are so many stories about rapes back then (with celebrities and everyday women), and people wouldn't go to the police...maybe because back then the authorities didn't give a shit about minority women, so often times people took justice into their own hands... & also risked getting their family members locked up... damn shame what happened to her. neutral

It's stunning how all that stuff gets blown over but you have to think of those times. No one would wanna report that a BLACK WOMAN or GIRL was being raped because they know they wouldn't investigate saying behind their breath, "she had it coming". That's why Florence Ballard's family didn't report her's right away. Another reason that Tammi and Florence didn't report their rapes was in fear of the rapist's families, not trying to cause drama, I know that was the case with Florence. I think Florence did talk about it in her court case but her rapist didn't get life. I think Flo's rapist went on to be a member of the Detroit Pistons.

Sadly, not really. These are more conservative statistics, and they show 60% of sexual assaults are never reported, and 15 of 16 rapists will never spend a day in jail. I didn't report it when it happened to me, and none of my friends who've experienced it did. I mean, it's still better today in that it gets reported at all, but I think a lot of people believe things are way better than they actually are. Especially when you add in the race of the victim. sad

Anyhow, this is my song for all of them (and anyone who's lost someone they love):
