frankie goes to hollywood - extending the pleasure (dome) [the long anthology]

i've been a fan of frankie since relax first came out and have an absolutely obscene collection of material released and otherwise. i've always been a fan of making compilations and in particular taking an album and creating an expanded edition, like my dream deluxe edition, something that never existed when i started making compilations

ZTT have been rather good at reissuing the zang tumb tumb archives lately, with a pile of both very rare and unreleased material coming out on cd for the first time, even putting the old cassette singles material on cd. so armed with all of this and my collection of just over 700 FGTH tracks on my pc (yup, you read that right, seven hundred! some are dupes for various reasons, such as appearing on more than one release, and so i have/had [as i've not updated it] one copy of every officially released mix in a folder) i aim to set out and create a compilation that creates and extended and expanded anthology covering both albums with outtakes (ie. different songs) and b sides in the middle, and replacing the standard studio versions of tracks with alternate and extended mixes

so we basically have something like...

welcome to the pleasuredome album...

1) - the world is my oyster 12" version

2) - welcome to the pleasuredome (but what mix? fruitiness mix?

... and so on with the full length ferrry across the mersey etc

then the b sides from pleasuredome like get it on and happy hi

then "unreleased"/ newly released stuff from pleasuredome like watusi love juicy

then "unreleased" / newly released stuff from liverpool like every kinda people and d'ya think i'm sexy

then b sides from liverpool like suffragette city, roadhouse blues, the waves

then liverpool...

101) warriors of the wasteland (but what mix? 12 disciples, attack or turn of the knife?)

and so on

in the middle between albums i aim to try and sequence the b sides and outtakes so as many as possible of the cover versions make a mini ep/album

my only problem is spoiled for choice for mixes. i want to keep the mixes relatively faithful to the album versions, but in longer extended mixes, which means original 80s mixes and none of the shitey 90s and later remixes. they can go and fuck themselves in paul morleys anus. i don't just want the longest mixes for the sake of it if they aren't one of the best versions and there is a far better version. i'd also like to have some rarity by using scarcer mixes, but not to the point where the enjoyment is reduced. so for relax it's the classic US mix (wrongly known as the sex mix which is the original 16 min version - the new york mix being an 8 minute edit of that mix ). i'm also up for throwing in some unreleased tracks if the sound quality is good enough, but only really if it's an unreleased song. i might stick some of the slighly lesser than perfect ones on the very end, and maybe put some of the very early demos and sessions at the very beginning just for completist reasons

so any frankie fans about that can help me pick mixes. if you can't remember the names, tell me what you know about the mix and i'll identify from either the release/length or description. running length doesn't matter as it's not designed for cd

oh, and if anyone has frankies version of slave to the rhthym, let me know

as a side project i'm also kinda working on a frankie cover album with ferry, san jose, born to run, get it on, satisfaction, d'ya think i'm sexy, every kind of people, roadhouse blues, suffragette city, war, the stripper, etc. might also do another of b sides and non album tracks. you can never get enough repetition with the tumb

I have heard the Trever Horn mix! love it;p, btw i went to film school with Trevor horns daughter!!

Of course she was quite about it, but i had to marvel at the fact he produced Pet Shop Boys, Seal, Grace Jones, Frankie etc wink

I didn't realize this song had so many remixes though! i need to check more, and what do u think of the new york instrumental of Relax & two tribes^^... that's my jam

the altered real (aka trevor horn mix) is the original 7" version (there was another 7" with the alternate real aka escape video mix). the original 7" of relax wasn't released on cd until not too long ago (the version on the album is different). one of the difficulties in compililing mixes of certain artists with FGTH in particular is the very same mix can have different names on different releases, not even allowing for errors on later reissues and compilations (some have a whole host of errors)

i used to joke with my friend that if you listened to all the versions of relax back to back it would take a week, followed by a month of listening to two tribes. those guys at ZTT were the king of remixes. the relax US mix (7.20min) is the perfect example of how a 12" extended mix should sound. it was amazing at the time to have the original 16 minute 33rpm 12" of relax, but it wasn't anything like the actual song, which is why it was edited to the 8.20min new york mix. due to further errors on labels the US mix was wrongly labelled sex mix or new york mix, but all 3 mixes are very different. the album version is slightly different to the 7" and the b side accapella to instrumental mix again is different. there was also a greek promo only edit of the sex mix. then you got the original demo version which has extra lyrics, the radio sessions, the "europa" live version from the FGTH computer game, etc etc etc. there was also a bootleg back in the day with someone rapping over the top of the US mix

it was just a shame the second album didn't live up to expectations after the first. going back to it there was some good stuff and good remixes, but a lot of crap too. there are a lot of demos from the time, and listening to them you had to wonder how the finished the album. mind if you compare the original demos of some of the stuff like two tribes you wonder how they became famous

it's cool you went to school with his daughter. i presume you didn't get any cool stuff from her? the ZTT vaults are absolutely chock full of unreleased stuff

i've been going through various mixes trying to work on this. the art of the 12" vol 2 is out in a couple of weeks and that has some more previously unreleased and new to cd stuff to take into consideration

i also worked out a nice set of cover versions that makes about an albums worth of material which i'll fit in the middle of the two albums

just wondering if there were any more frankie fans to give input
