As for bringing Prince into this, look, Prince is one of the greatest guitar players of all time but this isn't about him. lol

it wasn't me bringing prince but o can say prince would never play something as disstasteful as slash did on le freak live at budokan

I GET that this is a Prince board but c'mon your not giving Slash any credit at all. He deserves his accolades just as much as Prince does in the guitar department. If you prefer Prince thats fine but dont sit here imply Slash is a mediocre guitar player when he is far from it.

I dont think anyone came in here and said Slash was the greatest ever.

Ha, I was at that show that is featured in the clip. Olympiastadium in Munich, Germany... June 26th 1993. Me in the front row and Brian May was a special guest. That was a great day. Yeah, I'm a huge Slash fan too.

6 years later, when he performed at the same place with Michael at the MJ & Friends concert he came outside to smoke a cigarette. I stood like 10 m next to him and didn't dare to ask for a picture. Foolish.

Omigod, there's no way in the world that Slash is a better player than Van Halen -

to suggest otherwise betrays a serious psychological disorder.

Anyways, I saw Slash walking out of that chapel in the middle of the desert in that

Slash is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. I have seen him in GNR 3 times(first time opening for Aerosmith in 1988), 3 times with VR, and once solo. He never fails to impress me with his amazing solos.

yeah, our little midget would own slash on guitar.slash have some very nice solos like november rain, sweet child of mine.he ain't much of a rhythm player which is weird because he's black.it was axl who brought inovation to that band, not slash.

Let's not stereotype here okay? wink And Slash is actually a pretty good rhythm player, don't diminish his skills just because he doesn't play funk. Anywayyy..my favorite song off Appetite

Saw Slash's Snakepit in '95, Slash as a guest with Michael in '99 and '01, Velvet Revolver in '04 and Slash solo in '10 and '11. Looking forward to his tour this year.

I was in the same area as him for the day when he was doing an interview to promote his book a few years ago and I wanted to hang out near the area where fans were waiting just to get a glimpse at him, but didn't do it in the end.

i dunno slash takes up space in time quite nicely. imo he's a unique looking man and strikes

some mean pose+ on stage along with his guitar talent(s).

Slash: Un...

i first paid him attention on the 1992 MJ, 'black or white

How can you say the word racism

when a white guitar player(me) say that i think black guitar players are usualy better rhythm guitar players?

Jimmy Nolen

Catfish

Nile Rodgers

Prince

Rodger Troutman

name me five better white rhythm guitar players?

Or the classic late 60's example of two greatest players at the time Hendrix and Clapton,Hendrix was 10 times better rhythm player(lead also smile )

But...you're only naming FUNK rhythm guitarists. There's more to rhythm guitar than just chicken grease. Rock, jazz, country, classical/flamenco, etc. None of those guys could pick up a les paul and a marshall plexi and drive a song like Slash can, finger pick like danny gatton, or comp jazz chord voicings/inversions like Allan Holdsworth.

First up. props to the guitarist on here for trying to educate, but it is sometimes hard to grasp when you don't have the background musically. Slash is great, the icon of his generation as far as guitar goes. My old band played 3 hours before Prince in Hong Kong in 2003 and Slash threw his after party at my club in 2010 and jammed with us a good 30 minutes. So I have seen both up close and personal. Musically they occupy different positions in their perspective projects.

A more apt Guns and Roses comparison would be to compare Prince to Izzy, as they are both rhythm guitar players, with Prince taking the occasional solo. Slash plays lead guitar exclusively. Eddie Van Halen plays Metal and is famous for his tap style, which neither Slash or Prince use much.

As I said in a previous post, Prince is a song writer, not a riff writer. He writes solos to fit the song that he has composed. Speed or number of notes do not figure into the equation. He is an outstanding guitar player.

Because Slash is so easily recognizable, he gets a lot of guff from guitar players "he is not that good", "He is average at best..." But as alluded to earlier in the thread, Slash has written some amazing riffs that have defined rock music for the last 25 years.

Prince has written some of the most amazing songs of the last 30 years. Guitar riffs? No so much. If you disagree, which ones? I am interested.

That's awesome you got to see him smile i saw him person in a movie theatre once, but i didn't say hi he was with people. Didn't want to be that awkward fan who interrupts lol

Prince is an amazing player, he has not done what i woul call rifts i admit, but his solos are some of the meat of his songs biggrin

Plus personally i always liked Prince's piano playing even better[as a piano player myself]

But Slash well you got Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child ''O'' Mine, My Michelle, Nighttrain, Mr. Brownstone, November Rain, Estranged, etc.

Hell even non hits like Right Next Door To Hell, Locomotive, Don't Cry, Coma, Since I Don't Have You etc. have great rifts.

So prince is a rhythm guitar player who occasionaly ay lead guitar and should be compared to izzy stradlin.haha haha what a crap.the best way to compare slash and prince if they played a same song.and they did. Check rod stewart's version of peach and check prince's original. While peach is something that can be considered as slash's comfort zone his playing isn't even close to prince's fancy licks

Nope. Only way that comparison works if they are on the same stage playing through the same rig in the same key with the same singer. That DID NOT happen. I said their position in the musical composition should be compared. The terms "lead" and "rhythm" do not denote one is better than the other or subordinate any more than major or minor keys do. I speak of the work done in the context of song structure. Use this as an opportunity to educate yourself on musical matters.

This is how the org goes confused

You can't have a thread about just the player, race & other players people think are better have to come up. But in the end Slash doesn't care who is whiter, blacker or better. He is respected, his face is in every guitar center in America & he's makin dough everyday lol
